seems like the best option is to just use #9 and #19 and hope they work out. i'm sure player rankings will be all over the place too once they start individual workouts so i won't even try to guess who they will take.

Ford's 2.0 mock draft has Charlotte taking Biyombo and Jordan Hamilton.

I think those would be relatively strong picks.

They obviously have a huge need at SF/PF now that Gerald Wallace is gone. Also Diaw is hopefully in his last year as a Bobcat.

There aren't many minutes available at guard with Augustin/Livingston and Jackson/Henderson so no need to take one and there aren't any legit centers (maybe Jordan Williams?) that look like good value at those picks.

Since the Bobcats are undersized without a true center it makes a lot of sense to take a rugged 6'9 240 PF (with a 7'7 wingspan!) and 6'7 220 SF who can both rebound. Who cares if Biyombo is raw, that team as currently constructed is going absolutely nowhere the next two years they have plenty of time to let him develop.

i think after next season (however long it is) payroll will be at around $40 mil. i'm assuming that number does not include Diaw since he will be a FA. i hate that they wrecked the team in order to free up future cap space, but if they do it right i guess all will be well.

for someone in the know, what kind of free agents would the Bobcats be able to sign this offseason? obviously no huge contracts, but can they offer anything above the mid-level exception?

I doubt the Bobcats will make any huge free agent splashes because no one knows what the new CBA will be and they don't want to commit to anything before they have enough info to make a gameplan.

Right now the softcap is somewhere around $58 million and the NBA is proposing to mandate a HARD cap of $45 million. Obviously, that's not going to happen but it just shows how much uncertainty there is right now.

The Bobcats are still at about $50 million for next year and they have 2 first round draft picks to sign assuming they don't trade them. In other words there's not much space because Jordan picked up so many dumbass contracts like Diop, Carroll, and Najera on top of Diaw/Jackson.

I wouldn't anticipate any big changes next year. There will be a lot more space (and hopefully developed talent) for a 2012 push to add CPIII or someone via trade.

More accurately, we signed Matt Carroll to an unfathomable contract. Then we said wow we have to get rid of him at all costs so we took on Diop's unfathomable contract.

Then we were like wow Tyson Chandler is a solid center with a reasonable contract that expires this year. Let's flip this for the two shittiest players Dallas has, oh yeah and make sure they have bad contracts please.

Wait Dallas has Carroll? Oh we've got to have him back, this will be rich!

It was a terrible trade and Hollinger explained it very clearly in an article at the time. It really didn't save us any money at all it just spread it across two seasons instead of one.

It's no secret the Bobcats are ridiculously strapped for operating cash. Bob Johnson made a lot of capital calls and his limited partners were either tapped out or told him to fuck off towards the end.

Michael Jordan is flat out poor by NBA ownership standards and he's already overleveraged himself by buying the controlling interest of the team.

All of these bizarre trades (Chandler, Nazr, Wallace, Okafor to a lesser extent) and letting Felton walk were admissions that the team was broke and couldn't afford a NBA payroll.

The problem is we spent the 3 seasons before that loading up on bad contracts so we didn't have anyone else other teams were willing to take so we had to sell our only assets for 20 cents on the dollar in this economy.

Basically, it was trade away the near term future of the franchise for hopes of keeping the lights on until the next collective bargaining agreement.

That's the only way you find yourself capped out with no current talent and limited potential talent. (Tyrus, Gerald, DJ)

With the Chandler trade, the Bobcats acted like getting Erick Dampier's non-guaranteed contract was manna from heaven and they were suddenly going to make the first good trade in franchise history. Four months later, nothing happens, we waive him, and now Chandler is second team all defense.

Most inept ownership this side of the Maloofs.

Again, all of the moves over the past season were purely financial decisions. No one in the entire organization thought they were good basketball moves.

On the flip side, most of the moves we made prior to last season/offseason were basketball decisions that turned out to be poor evaluation of talent while pissing away millions of dollars.

Legitimate question, when was the last NBA or NFL draft that people thought was a strong draft months before (I realize the NBA draft is next month)? It seems like every year the commentary is "well, after the first 3 picks it really is a weak draft". Then a few days before the draft Cedric Simmons "has a lot of upside". Then a few years later we correctly judge the draft class.

Same thing goes when anyone talks about players deciding to stay or leave early. Good/Bad move on Jeff's part, next years class is loaded!.

Edit: I agree the first few picks of this draft aren't as hyped as previous years. I'm more talking about the late lottery picks.

Most drafts are judged by the top 2-3 guys. So the Lebron/Melo draft, the Durant/Oden drafts, etc. were viewed as stronger than a draft where the top two guys are a sophomore who came out of nowhere and a freshman who played 10 games all year.


In football its different, since one player rarely has the same impact as one basketball player can. I usually hear the NFL draft referred to as being strong or weak in certain positions, more than strong or weak as a whole.
