It is at least worth noting that the grumblings and criticism has been growing in Texas for a few years now. Say what you will about us not having a shot at him, but this is the exact type of shit that pushed TOB out of BC, so it's not unrealistic that he might consider a change of scenery.
IMO that's worth a discussion with an impending job opening here at State. 3/2/2011 8:47:51 AM |

I hope Yow is putting out feelers. I obviously don't know how this process goes when it's a foregone conclusion that the coach will be gone (apparently Fowler didn't know either)...but I'd like to think that Yow has the gears cranking (and hopefully that info from SFN is true).
I've probably posted it a dozen times now, but Yow needs to sit down individually with every player (exception of Smith of course) and tell them that this change is for the better and that they will be consulted and involved in the process of hiring a new coach (even if they really aren't). And get on the phone with the recruits and tell them that a new coach will be hired ASAP and for them to stay firm with their commitments until a hire is made. We're going to need HUGE damage control. It would be a shame to lose all this talent. Coaching changes don't always decimate programs like what happened to us five years ago...because every school doesn't have Fowler when coaching changes are made.3/2/2011 9:17:10 AM |

While it's retarded to even consider big names like donovan and barnes that would at best use us to get a raise at their current schools, it's pretty much impossible for Yow to somehow bungle things as badly as Fowler did. Presumably if she somehow did go after big names, it would be done in a professional way and not end up making us look like idiots again. 3/2/2011 10:17:40 AM |
Milkboner Suspended 934 Posts user info edit post |
Exactly, if Yow does her job then we won't know if or which big names turn us down.
I don't think some of you actually realize how unprofessionally the last coaching search was executed, and it seems that some of you think that is the norm.

^^ incredibly incredibly different. roy williams was an alum and former assistant and that team was four years removed from a final four. rick barnes is from north carolina... and that's where the similarities end.

Every moment wasted on a pipe dream is a moment which you could have been using to pursue a realistic candidate. This is exactly what happened during our last coach. We went after grease hair and barnes and probably missed on a couple more realistic opportunities because of that.3/2/2011 11:23:40 AM |

I'm not sure what all the "face palming" is about. If we are willing to open up the wallet this time around there is absolutely no reason to not ask around for some established successful coaches. It would actually be stupid as fuck not to, and I would be pissed if Yow didn't ask around because she wouldn't be doing her JOB.
We have a lot to sell to a potential coach this time around:
- Coach in the historically premiere conference in the country - State of the art facilities (the one thing Fowler didn't fuck up) - A roster with a shit load of talent (will likely stick around if we land a big name coach) - Raleigh in general (voted one of best cities in the country to live every year) - NC State's own basketball history - Some of the best fans in the nation
We sure as shit better be poking around for a home run hire. With a new AD we're in a better place this time around to knock it out of the park. Flame away.

Right now, this season, I agree that there are a few conferences better than the ACC, however I don't think that means the ACC has been displaced as the best conference historically, and should remain on top in the foreseeable future (but that's a whole other debate).

Call me crazy...but I'm definitely not enamored with Barnes. He's had some of the best players in the country over the past 10 years and has had extremely mediocre results in the tourney...and below average results in relation to his talent.
Not saying I wouldn't take him, but there are other high profile coaches that I'd rather have (that we won't be able to get anyways...so the point is moot). 3/2/2011 12:22:51 PM |

agreed, he's definitely a good coach, but seems like he consistently uncerachieves in relation to his talent....Granted, he's been to the tourney all those consecutive years, and had the occasional deep run, but I'm just not convinced he'd be worth what we'd have to pay to get him.

How about a guaranteed tourney appearance every single year, sprinkled in with a final four, a couple of elite 8's and a couple of sweet sixteens in a period of 12 years?
I'd rather take a chance that someone with that resume could potentially win a national championship here than take a chance on an up-and-comer who has a 50% chance of flaming out completely for half the price.
I mean seriously, what are the odds an unproven up and comer has a resume even close to that?

Guy would be making as much as Coach K, the highest-paid coach in the country, and has never won a conference title at UT, has one Final Four appearance, and underachieves almost every single year.
For that price, no thanks. 3/2/2011 12:40:39 PM |
Milkboner Suspended 934 Posts user info edit post |
He only makes 2mil/year according to Wiki. I have no idea how accurate that is but if so we could probably land him for less than 4/year.
What a huge step up he would be, I'm not sure why you'd turn Barnes away if he wanted to come here. In favor of an unproven up and comer? It'd be assinine.
