I think they played some of Rue's death, but not all. They edited out the flowers and the singing definitely in the replay, and I think in the "live" version they did as well. That was the impression I got from Book 1. But in Book 3, I got the impression when people were giving reasons they liked Katniss, they listed Rue's "funeral" as one of the reasons. So, I don't know.

"Holy fucking shit. Why do you even watch movies....you should just make your own perfect movie where everything is explained in a ten hour epic."

Don't confuse some questions about the story of the book with qualms with the story-telling in the movie. There are examples of both in this thread, some examples fall under both and some are just the former. For example, I find the stuff about the servants interesting but that wasn't important in the movie so I don't care that it wasn't explained in the movie. There's a huge difference between that and a character knowing something he has no reason to know.

There is a disconnect in how readers and non-readers are perceiving certain actions and motives of the characters in the movie. And it's not just the few people in this thread. The reason for that is probably that the readers have knowledge that they're using to fill in the blanks, even if they're not doing so consciously.

A movie doesn't have to be 10 hours long to do a better job at this type of stuff. They could have changed it so Thresh didn't stumble upon them at the supply depot, he could have encountered Katniss while she was "burying" Rue (which would show him learning about the respect Katniss showed her) and he could still give her the "only this time" spiel (with good reason) in the same amount of screen time. They could shown less than 30 seconds of him watching Katniss bury Rue from afar and then still have the same scene at the supply depot. There are multiple ways they could have done some of this stuff without making the movie too long or changing the sentiment of the story. But instead they chose to keep some elements without giving them the attention necessary for it to really make sense in the context of the movie itself.

Meh. Any of those could just as redily be "assumed" as being shown. Dont need to be spoon fed everythingits not a great leap of logic to envision thresh -did- come upon katniss during the burial. I mean fuck rue was making enough noise that anyone in the area could have heard what was going on. "Katniss please help me" screamed bloody murder over, and over was a pretty ironclad clue that they were working tigether

let me see if i have this right.... He cared enough about Rue's death and how she was treated by Katniss (which your "not a great leap of logic" tells us he saw) to let Katniss live for the moment. Fair enough. But he didn't partake in the funeral for Rue (which your leap of logic tells us he saw take place, right?).

Aside from the fact that I would now have to assume make a leap of logic make up a B.S. excuse as to why someone who cared about Rue enough to let her funeral master survive (putting himself at risk in turn) wouldn't have joined in on paying respects at said funeral, this all makes perfect sense of how he knew what Katniss did for Rue.

[sarcasm]Movies that require you to completely make things up in order for the behavior of the characters to make sense are great examples of film-making.[/sarcasm]

This movie has some not so great elements to it. They're easy enough to forgive and get past for the sake of enjoying the movie. But in doing so, the movie loses something. This could have been really good. Instead of being good to really good, it was OK to good because it was kind of a shoddy adaptation.

No...you're just being anal. It's easy to say these things after watching the movie. But had all of these things been included in (like you said...it would only take 30 seconds here and there), it could have made for some awkward scenes or moments that didn't fit right.

The movie isn't perfect, but you're reaching.

Now that I"m on a computer I can give a more detailed response about Rue's death (and sorry if someone already did - also someone correct me if I'm wrong, cause I only read the book once)

I believe Katniss had the memorial out near the cornucopia, or somewhere in the open. Marvel stabbed a spear down into Rue, and Katniss shot him in the eye (which I wish they would have included but admit would have been gruesome considering the audience). Anyway, I think the trap was coincidence, as in the careers had set it early and Rue just happened to hit it while on her way to the last fire. Marvel obviously found her. While reading the book (well, listening), I got the assumption Marvel hadn't told the careers yet but they might have heard Rue screaming for Katniss and thus knew they were working together. Thresh was in an area near the cornucopia for the entire games, so it is possible he also heard her screaming. Regardless, Clove talked about it more in the book than what they showed in the movie, and when she was about to cut up Katniss's face I believe Thresh said something to the effect of, "You hurt that little girl??" He then came up behind Clove and hurt her pretty badly after confirming Rue was dead - I remember him smashing her head in with a rock, again too gruesome for the movie. At this point, I'm prettyyyy sure he confronted Katniss and confirmed what Clove was talking about (i.e., Marvel killing Rue) and I think he also asked about the body or something. For some reason I remember Katniss telling Tresh she did the memorial thing for Rue (maybe that's why I remember people in the district knowing about it?). So Thresh told her he was letting her go that one time, for Rue.

Even with all that said and knowing some is not in the movie, I don't understand why it's so hard for someone to deduce they were working together by Clove's mention of Rue being her friend, then him letting Katniss go. Not all of them are douchebags in the arena, and IMO it showed Thresh could see Katniss wasn't a heartless tribute like many of the others by in a way watching over Rue and working with her.

My apologies to everyone for thinking it was OK to criticize a movie even though I enjoyed it. Despite the fact that people all over are talking about and writing that there are a variety of things in this movie that are not clear if you didn't read the books, it's clearly insane and anal to suggest that a little different direction and writing could have made this a really good movie.

There's no irony in the fact that a story about government forced, public executions of children by the hands of other children and the spectacle it's made into for the blood thirsty bourgeosie was made into relatively light-hearted, don't think about it too much, fodder acted out by children and geared toward the masses.

^^ maybe light hearted wasn't the best word. There's some heavy stuff in there, and i don't think the movie was as dark as the content it was actually portraying. I know the pg-13 rating contributed to that a fair amount, but it could have been a little darker.

I figured Finnick to be a lot bigger and taller than that Ryan dude (who is pretty short). When I pictured him in the book he was like this guy who was in Wolverine (and Legion, and other sub-par movies where he plays a really strong, big guy):

Or Rainier Wolfcastle:

Wanted to read the book before reading the thread... I'll probably wait for the DVD before seeing the movie. Few questions about the movie:

In the thread I read that Madge wasn't in the film and that Katniss starts out with the pin. The only real issue I have with this is that at some point her family is supposedly on death's doorstep with no means of getting food. That's when Katniss gets the bread from Peeta. I assume that the pin has some monetary value... see where I'm going?

The next issue is from the stills on page 4:

Since the bow/arrows aren't silver I'm assuming these were from the woods outside district 12. Man they have some NICE clothes for poor, starving people. I get that they've made some progress with hunting/trading but I was under the impression that they were still on the edge of starving every day. Are all the people in district 12 that clean / well dressed / healthy? I imagined a concentration camp with walking skeletons and everything being gray / drab. Lifeless with hardly any color.

And the book tanked toward the end. Not enough movement / progress once they reached the cave, the story kind of stagnated there. It started to pick back up but then the dogs took a lot of the tension out of what should have been a better final confrontation.

And in reading the thread I guess there isn't much character development because the entire book is from Katniss' perspective. You never get inside the minds of the other characters and you don't even know what they are doing 90% of the time. I guess the movie took that same direction. A shame.

She gets the pin well after the starvation time period. She pretty much gets it the day before/day of the Reaping in the town's "market". You could have figured that out if you had.....watched the movie.

It's a friggin movie. You have to appeal to the audience. In almost every movie I've ever seen...a guy can have a near death fist fight, and the next scene he's got a ton of make-up on. Yeah...they'll put a scratch here and there and some fake blood...but it's a fucking movie. The main characters have to remain pretty.

But you'll be happy to know that the rest of the people in District 12 are very "concentration camp-ish". Or they actually look like they've been working in mines all day and live in backwoods West Virginia...kinda like the book. You could have seen that if you....wait for it.....watched the movie.

Quote :

So you're a little upset that the movie didn't follow the book earlier...now you're upset that it did?? Right....

Come on people. It's an entertaining book and an entertaining movie. It's not fucking Dickens. I hope you aren't this critical with your every day life. Must be miserable.

It's a few questions about the movie, not "The movie sucks because __________"

I don't really plan on watching the movie any time soon. I usually wait for the DVD release and most of the time I forget about the movie entirely and never end up watching it. That's why I ask the questions about the movie... curious about the direction and I might not get around to watching it.

You answered the question about where the pin came from. Thanks.

And there's some irony in you being overly critical of a post on a message forum. Must be miserable.

Maybe a little...but barely. It's pretty much what message boards are for. To ask questions, discuss, and argue.

You watch a movie to be entertained. Not to dissect it and find out what's wrong.

Nah. If the movie were exactly like the book then what's the point of the movie? Again, just questions not criticism. I figured they could have used the movie to explore the story from other people's perspective. I suspect they did.

we're all on a message board in a thread with the topic of The Hunger Games. So by what you said, we're on here to ask questions, discuss, and argue about The Hunger Games. Except we're not supposed to dissect or find out what's wrong with The Hunger Games (since it's a movie and that's not what movies are for according to you). So where does that leave us... The Hunger Games Circle Jerk thread?

I don't think i ever received the movie-watching rule book you seem to be using. The one that says "You watch a movie to be entertained. Not to dissect it and find out what's wrong."

I watch movies to be entertained. I also watch movies, view art, listen to music, etc. with a critical eye/ear in regard to that particular craft -- critical as in what i liked and didn't like in regard to direction, acting, writing, cinematography, costumes, color pallets, etc. And I enjoy that. It's OK to view a movie as someone's creative project (that's exactly what it is afterall), and acknowledge that like any other creative project, there are things that could have been done differently (some times for better and sometimes for worse)... shit, people make a living doing it.

It's also OK to grab the pop-corn, watch the movie, and never think about it in that sense. I don't chime in on the "what hunky guy to cast as characters from the future books based predominately on their looks" conversation. There's really nothing wrong with that conversation, but it doesn't interest me so I don't partake. Have you considered just not commenting on the posts that don't interest you? Or perhaps maybe it's just time to realize that some people like to watch and think about movies in a different manner than you and that there is no rule book for such a thing?
