http://www.bit-tech.net/blog/gaming/2011/10/06/why-we-need-origin/
Quote : | " Of course, Origin is a bit rough right now; it's still a fledgling system, but it’s already remarkably robust. You’re able to register old EA games to it, in the same way as you’d register Steamworks games to Steam and, as the Battlefield 3 beta is proving, its social and friend systems are fairly solid too. It even managed to cope with the huge data demand of the BF3 beta client, which is testament to EA’s forward planning; some might recall Steam grinding to a halt on the launch day of Half-Life 2 as millions of gamers all tried to download the game at once.
However, while EA is large enough to pull off its own, sole store/DRM/distribution service, it’s perhaps the only publisher that's capable of such a feat. Ubisoft’s laughably poor attempts with Uplay have only served to enrage gamers, and THQ’s re-launched ShopTHQ is similarly out of touch. Even the might of Activision would struggle with its own similar service; outside of Call of Duty, its PC portfolio is surprisingly weak. Basically, the market just can’t cope with every publisher creating its own service and is in danger of over-fragmenting, not to mention driving customers insane
However, there's certainly enough room for two sufficiently supported and fully-equipped services such as Steam and Origin, and for those arguing that Origin is yet another program to have to install, I’d suggest you look at the online chat market; it’s not uncommon to use two or more services, including Windows Live, Google Talk, Skype, AIM and the dozens of other online communication services, yet few complain about the individual advantages of each service. Hopefully Origin and Steam can manage to similarly compete, and co-exist, to the eventual benefit of customers." |

Really want to play this but I've not updated my system in ages (probably since 2008). I know I'll need a new graphics card but I wonder if it will even be playable on a processor this old (C2D E6550 @ 2.33 GHz).
If I can get by with just upgrading the GPU any ideas on what's the best sub $100 card that will do the job? Not looking to max out all the settings, just to be able to play without it being painful. Upgrading from a 512MB Radeon X1900XT. 10/23/2011 1:24:45 PM |

Your CPU will "run" it, the GPU is the MAJOR bottleneck in BF3. Look for something with over 1Gb of VRAM if possible if you are gaming at 1080p or above because BF3 is a VRAM hog. I was getting over 1.4Gb of VRAM usage in Beta w/ out all the graphics features available yet at 1200p.
For a $100 GPU I would look on a Computer Forum like XtremeSystems or Guru3D and find a used 460 SE 1Gb, which run a little over $100 used. Or if you can afford a 1Gb 460, go for that instead (it is better than the 460 SE)
Something like this: http://www.ebay.com/itm/EVGA-NVIDIA-GeForce-GTX-460-SE-01G-P3-1366-TR-1-GB-GDDR5-SDRAM-PCI-Express-/320776814530?pt=PCC_Video_TV_Cards&hash=item4aafc9bfc2
However back to your CPU you need a balanced system, so you can't just put a 570 or something with that old of a C2D and expect miracles. However if you are gaming at least at 1080p I would upgrade the GPU first, but your CPU is almost as in need too. It is a tough call to make on that CPU considering the quality of the BF3 graphics and the resources they require. When you can afford it get a C2Q like a Q9300.

@richthofen: Your cpu is going to limit your gpu by a lot, compared to current gen cpu's; but like what blackdog said, the best option is to find a nice gtx 460 1gb to throw in the system. I picked a new one up for $100 last month so it shouldn't be hard to find a used one for the same price.
And don't even bother upgrading to the q9300, even the current gen i3 dual cores will run faster for games than the old c2quads. Save your money up and see if you can afford to build a new pc later down the road; look at Q1 or Q2 of next year. 10/23/2011 5:06:30 PM |

so how is the texture pack? does the game look better than CoD?
how's the game play if you don't have a decent squad to play with? still manageable?
how's the lag? do the dedicated servers work out well? 10/25/2011 6:24:19 AM |
JBaz All American 16764 Posts user info edit post |
looks amazing, yes so much better than beta was. Gameplay is about the same as beta, but def refined a bit, seems very balanced. As for squad play, they added the join custom squads, just like bc2. Lag seems pretty manageable, even on full 64 player servers. Haven't noticed a hick up.
Some of these maps are pretty damn huge and hardcore has a mini map! although no triangle spotting. At least you can see where you are going without knowning much about the level right away. 10/25/2011 6:48:26 AM |

While I'm waiting on my last component to start my new PC build, some questions for those of you who are already playing:
1. How does voice communication work? Is it still only squad-based? Would it be possible to have something like Teamspeak running so that you could communicate with more people, or did they find a way to disable that?
2. Do any of the jets have bombs anymore? What kind of loadout does a "starter" jet with no unlocks get (e.g. guns only, guns + bombs, guns + AA missiles)? I just REALLY want to bomb tanks.
3. Are the jets ONLY in Conquest mode? 10/25/2011 8:55:27 AM |

I never use ingame voice com. 2) jets only have machineguns starting off, missles are unlockables, but i haven't played enough to figure this out. flying isn't my forte 3) I believe so... but could be in rush, not sure. Also IGN is normally pretty good w/ reviews, but 2 pages, wtf? Back when PC was the main gaming platform I used to always go to IGN and for N64. Now a days I just read lots of sites due to the fact EA could easily be paying them.

i take it back about performance in the final build
EVERYTHING maxxed except AA and AF at 2560x1440 and average around 70fps in city maps and 90fps in large desert maps. The MSAA option is bugged as even 2x causes hitching of some sort. Seems driver releated.

I haven't been a PC gamer in years, but shit like this is exactly the reason why.
Why in the fuck wouldn't they take the time to make shit work right before they release the game? It's not like they didn't have access to the hardware beforehand. Yeah, I'm gonna spend thousands of dollars on a computer and then sit around on my ass for months after a game comes out while the developer gets their shit together. Fuck that. There is a reason that PC gaming is dying off and it's because of stupid shit like this. Anyone that wants to see BF3 screens I took can look here:
http://steamcommunity.com/id/NCSUZoSo/screenshots/?tab=&showdate=1&filter=shortcut_70775
Settings: 1920x1200p DX11 All Ultra 16xAF 2xAA w/ 2x NVIDIA Supersampling
Most are Co-Op Campaign, a friend of mine wanted to run through it.
My favorite screen is this:
http://cloud.steampowered.com/ugc/613840910950792505/52847BC25B8732231491A1F9E6A6E9FD5AC6F3EE/
It is nothing graphically amazing, it is an extremely lucky screen that I probably couldn't get again if I went back through the level on easy and took 500 screen shots. The screen is a Thermal Scope zoomed in while a RPG is fired and still in flight. When I went through the screens I didn't even know I had caught that in a screen shot. It looks like a nuclear football with a nose cone and you can see the exhaust of the RPG viewable on the roof.
Screens like this are much better graphically:
http://cloud.steampowered.com/ugc/613840910950905479/DC0B9CF8AD9DD1DEC05F636D473E6EBBB170DA86/
The screens are in a very odd order for some reason. I will be putting many more multiplayer screens up like this one tomorrow:
