the "talent" thing with gott is so oversold
we brought back 4 potentially good but flawed players. cj williams became good and painter became below average and I would say both wouldnt have reached that level without Gott's coaching. then we got a transfer from a low major. and that's our entire roster
miami has at least two 5*s and reggie johnson. maryland has the leading scorer in the acc. dont give me the talent crap 1/11/2012 11:13:41 PM |

harrow sucked royally in ACC play.
I seriously doubt he'll magically become a shooter/scorer under Calipari although he could put up a ton of assists because he's a great passer and if he's surrounded by 5* in the shitty SEC he could look good. 1/11/2012 11:24:51 PM |

Definitely took a step back tonight, though it's hard to point the finger at Gottfried. The players weren't executing and GT was getting every bounce. Just too much shit to pull it out.
-Wood going 2-9 from deep and missing some wide open looks. Same goes with Johnson and CJW
-Howell playing like a retard on offense the first half
-Leslie handcuffed with fouls (some of which were complete shit)
-Brown being aloof on offense and careless on defense
-Again, just way too much shit going GT's way -- banked threes, phantom fouls, shooting insanely well from the FT line. Because of this, we had virtually no transition baskets.
Man, that game sucked. 1/11/2012 11:32:03 PM |

JUST GOT BACK FROM THE FRIDGE
Man that was a really bad showing. Very unimpressed with Gottfried tonight.
-He still doesn't have us guarding the perimeter.
-He took a terrible technical foul when the game was in jeopardy
-He allowed GT to go on a huge first half run by benching CJL and not calling a timeout to organize
-Our team completely lost composure in the 2nd half
-We made one run the entire game and completely folded the second GT punched us back
That needs to be the worst game we play all season. Our back was already against the wall after the meltdown against Stanford and the pathetic end game scenarios vs. Indiana and Vanderbilt.
I keep hoping our program has turned the corner, but it's very obvious that we haven't yet. 1/11/2012 11:38:42 PM |
Maverick1024 All American 4866 Posts user info edit post |
The Technical was a killer, but you can't really fault him for taking Leslie out. He picked up his 2nd foul halfway through the 1st half. Can't risk him getting a 3rd at that point
Only positive is I really don't think we can play any worse.

Most frustrating game in a loooong time. GT makes some deep 3's, and gets a few that bounce on every inch on the rim before falling in, we missed tons of FT's, the one ref went on a complete power trip after that technical, CJL was taken out of the game with weak fouls and we couldn't hit any of our jumpers. I feel like we always get at least 10-15 points a game in transition, and I don't remember us getting any tonight. Absolutely nothing went right.
^^ I don't see how you can pin a whole lot of that on Gottfried. We missed an insane amount of open looks, and even though our perimeter D isn't anywhere near good, GT hit some shots that flat out shouldn't have gone in.

Gottfried had nothing to do with that lose. GT made crazy shots they won't make again all year with our guys in good defensive position. They threw up 3 or 4 absolute bricks and they still went in. It was just they're night. The refs didn't help much but we didn't play well enough to win. 1/11/2012 11:52:09 PM |

There is a basic principle to basketball.
You play your best players as much as you can without them being so tired that they are actually worse players than their replacements.
We have really talented starters. CJ Leslie is one of the most (if not the most) talented player on our team.
We all agree, our bench is pretty awful therefore there is a sharp drop off between CJ Leslie and our bench.
CJ Leslie only played 24 minutes tonight. That's not good. We're not going to win many games if he plays 24 minutes.
Now in this game he fouled out, so maybe it didn't really matter. But what if he had ended the game with 24 minutes and 4 fouls? That means we left anywhere from 1 to ~12 minutes of CJL minutes on the table.
If you can't make correct logistic based decisions in a normal environment, then you definitely won't make them in a pressure situation.
You should always strive as a coach to understand basic strategy, and you should generally not waver from that because people tend to pysche themselves out in pressure environments.
Look at Les Miles in the championship game. The guy melted down so hard under the pressure of a championship game that he started a QB who had no chance of getting a first down. He was under so much duress that he forgot to substitute in the better QB in the 2nd half. Pressure has the ability to make someone with 30 years experience look like an amateur sometimes. 1/12/2012 12:06:14 AM |
face All American 8503 Posts user info edit post |
I've seen otherwise brilliant minds go to the chalkboard and make a mistake on a simple math problem in high school.
Some people don't perform well under pressure. That's why basic strategy is SO important.
It's no different than benching Larry Fitzgerald for Harry Douglas because he has a "good matchup" in your fantasy football league championship game.
When you're too close to the chalkboard you make mistakes. Subscribe to basic strategy, and adjust when you're 100% positive. Don't try to outsmart yourself your brain can't be trusted in pressure situations.
There is a reason financial advisors have other financial advisors and basketball players have coaches.
Maybe coaches need coaches too. 1/12/2012 12:10:17 AM |

substitute "everything goes wrong"
with
"a team who hasn't played well all season"
and we're getting pretty close.
Even though they should be, this team still isn't any good unfortunately.
They don't play any defense, they turn the ball over, and they cant shoot 3-pointers.
This is one of those teams you watch play basketball. It's not one of the teams you like watching play basketball.

This is again one of the most idiotic rants I have ever seen. What if you continued playing CJL in the first half and he picked up another 1-2 fouls. You can easily see where in a close END GAME SITUATION having your best players IS MUCH MORE IMPORTANT than having them at other points in the game (for reference see the cramping issues with CJL). If CJL had been allowed to stay in and foul out with 4 minutes left in a close game how would you feel about that? Again Mouth Breathing Rabble Rousing ITT Ohh and btw isn't Roger Ayers the same ref that called the intentional on Wood and some other BS on us in another game?
