"Moore Square is a great location when attending an event. Lots of parking and near city market and a number of restaurants and bars. When there isn't an event, it is filled with homeless people and you want to avoid it.
"

Quote :
"...I think City Market could be a lot more successful if only Moore Square wasn't in such a sad state. I get that the homeless are there because of the bus station and soup kitchens...and I certainly don't know where else they can go. What I do know is that I absolutely will not walk through there alone...It's an eye sore, with huge blad spots in the grass. it's great when they have free concerts out there, though. "

Quote :
"this sad area is a place where homeless sleep on the park benches. there is nothing remotely attractive about this place. i hate how there is so much money dumped into revamping Raleigh's downtown but this area and the square in front of the Tir Na Nog are squalid and barren. They could be beautiful but no. Any city in Europe would know what to do with such a place but here? No charming fountain, no street vendors, no view, no manicured flowers, no nothing. depressing"

Quote :
"I don't see how this is listed as an attraction. It's a park for the homeless and is across from the soup kitchen at the Salavation Army. Most of downtown Raleigh is a moribound abandoned area that longs for the "good old days" when it was the center of commerce. The city endlessly pours money into downtown trying to revitalize it and get people to move back from the suburbs. It would be my opinion to stay away from Moore Park. It is an unsafe area in my opinion."

Quote :
"I try to avoid Moore square. It is where the homeless hang out. Nowever I do enjoy going there when I have something to give away, and I know the homeless will take whatever I have. I do like being able to help them out. but to just go hang out at the park, no. Occationally the city will have events there. But then it just a bunch of people getting drunk in public. I will pass."

Quote :
"Not worth a trip unless they have an event. Yes it is sketchy and a lot of homeless hang out near here."

Quote :
"There are a lot rough folks in this area. The only time I have felt comfortable at Moore Square is during events there when they have loads of Police presence."

Quote :
"A find Moore square to be a little sketchy where they don't have an event there. There are places that do food handouts on one side of the square, so the square is usually full of people who are facing desperate times. I wish them well, but it does not make for an inviting space."

Quote :
"This is a feeding ground for the homeless by the churches and people who do not live in the area. One of the favorites is chicken and the homeless just toss their bones everywhere causing a choking hazard for dogs."

I don't even like parking near Moore Square. It fucking sucks to have a bunch of drunks asking you for money and feeling like there's a good chance your car is going to be broken into.

Seems like you are too cowardly to tell a homeless man not to bother you.

These people generally are near starvation and in poor health. If you are afraid of a frail dying person, you're a coward.

By treating them as rubbish to be swept out of sight, you're reinforcing the mechanisms in our society that create them.

The proper response isn't "eww I don't want to be conscious of your existence" it's "eww, how can we change social systems so that instead of rotting in the streets, you're getting help".

Posting TripAdvisor comments about how homeless people are gross seems oblivious. "Oh no, these homeless people made my trip scary" seems tone deaf against the fact these people with mental health and other issue have nowhere to go except a public park where food and a semblance of shelter are easily available. They have nothing.

There shouldn't be homeless in mores square, but the exact wrong solution is to criminalize being homeless and criminalize helping the homeless. In the presence of our piss poor support systems, feeding the homeless likely keeps them more docile and makes the area safer. Take this a step farther, give them predictable food, help, and access to assistance, and they'll not need to seek out the safety of a public square.

The homeless were in mores square even before the food handouts.

Figure out why the homeless are there (good sleeping spots, shelter, warmth, good panhandling, etc) and incentivize a relocation based on this analysis. They are just people making choices rational to their contexts.

Don't perform a trail-of-tears-esque relocation of make a token gesture (such as "well we moved the food handout go this place!!") and think this will solve the problem.

Good thing no one is saying that.

I highly recommend reading the blog of the guys that are the reason for this thread: http://www.lovewinsministries.org/category/blog/

It might be scary for you to humanize your enemy, but you'll continue to come up with the wrong answers when you don't understand the problem.

even at a bar you'll get thrown out if you are so drunk that you are sleeping everywhere and accosting people.

are you really saying that our attitudes towards alcohol in a park should be more relaxed than in a bar? when people get drunk they get aggressive. if you get drunk and aggressive at a bar you get thrown out or arrested; if you get drunk and aggressive in a park people with misdirected intentions will give you a biscuit.

seriously, show me real advocates for the homeless who think this is good policy

That sounds pretty GOPish. We don't generally reward unfavorable behavior unless it's broadcasted on reality TV.

I want the government to provide housing for the homeless first and ask questions later, is that GOPish? (hint: I'm a socialist)

Almost immediately churches and soup kitchens nearby offered their facilities to this group, those were good solutions. Raleigh opening a facility is a good solution. Feeding people in the public park is not a good solution.

^i'm not. it's just that the things you're saying are idiotic. just because a person is drunk doesn't make them violent. just because a person is homeless, doesn't mean they're going to rob you or stab you. if you're really trying to help these people, start off by adjusting your own misconceptions so you understand just who it is you're trying to help.

^cold day in hell that I agree with dtownral, but the large number of homeless in the park does present a measurable danger - both physical and economical - to the area. I don't believe that he is spreading "homeless hate"... in fact i think his point is the exact opposite - that if their needs are taken care of, they will be better off and Moore Square will be better off. (here is where viewpoints might start to differ, but I agree with him that simply giving them handouts/food and allowing them to continue as-is does nothing but breed dependence for the unfortunate.)
