"Sessions was ranked by National Journal in 2007 as the fifth-most conservative U.S. Senator, siding strongly with the Republican Party on political issues. He supported the major legislative efforts of the George W. Bush administration, including the 2001 and 2003 tax cut packages, the Iraq War, and a proposed national amendment to ban same-sex marriage."

^The reasons,

Quote :
"At Sessions' confirmation hearings before the Senate Judiciary Committee, four Department of Justice lawyers who had worked with Sessions testified that he had made several racist statements. One of those lawyers, J. Gerald Hebert, testified that Sessions had referred to the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) and the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) as "un-American" and "Communist-inspired" because they "forced civil rights down the throats of people."[13]

Thomas Figures, a black Assistant U.S. Attorney, testified that Sessions said he thought the Ku Klux Klan was "OK until I found out they smoked pot." Sessions later said that the comment was not serious, but apologized for it.[14] Figures also testified that on one occasion, when the U.S. Department of Justice Civil Rights Division sent the office instructions to investigate a case that Sessions had tried to close, Figures and Sessions "had a very spirited discussion regarding how the Hodge case should then be handled; in the course of that argument, Mr. Sessions threw the file on a table, and remarked, 'I wish I could decline on all of them,'" by which Figures said Sessions meant civil rights cases generally. After becoming Ranking Member of the Judiciary Committee, Sessions was asked in an interview about his civil rights record as a U.S Attorney. He denied that he had not sufficiently pursued civil rights cases, saying that "when I was [a U.S. Attorney], I signed 10 pleadings attacking segregation or the remnants of segregation, where we as part of the Department of Justice, we sought desegregation remedies."[15]"

I guess we can drop the charade of pretending Trump is going to be a different Republican with regards to LGBTQ rights now. His AG and VP are two of the most virulently anti-LGBTQ there are out there.

Sessions is listed as anywhere between 3rd to 5th most conservative Senator. Looking like we are gonna get a run of the mill far right administration from the looks of it.

"Trump has strongly denied the allegations and said during the campaign that he wouldn't settle. He told supporters at a May rally that he would come to San Diego to testify after winning the presidency.

"I could have settled this case numerous times, but I don't want to settle cases when we're right. I don't believe in it. And when you start settling cases, you know what happens? ^I've read some articles about the situation. I still don't get why people who went to a for profit university/education program are suing. Don't they know that no one gives these programs any merit? I guess anyone who goes to a for profit school now has the right to sue when they don't make a lot of money after they finish?

So this is a bit concerning... Trump, lied about putting his company in a blind trust, and that has offered no solution to the conflict of interest with his business and being president, and who has said his kids would run the company without any intervention from him, had a top Trump Corporation leader (his daughter) sit in on a meeting with the Japan PM.

He's a grifter.

He didn't disclose his taxes because he doesn't want anyone to know what his actual net worth is. If he isn't actually a billionaire, he will be by the time he leaves office. And he apparently has no idea what a blind trust is.

I love how the dumbass leftists recite their "victimhood hierarchy" as if Trump has indicated he would do anything to harm them.

-Muslims
-Gays
-Trans
-Blacks
-Women

I guess if you're indoctrinated you can't differentiate between those perpetual "victims" and non-citizens, which is the only class of people his policies are against.

But you know... herp a derp my narrative! Love trumps hate! My feelings!

Quote :
"One obvious factor was the anxiety over the collapse of the region’s coal industry.

“Our coal jobs are gone here in Eastern Kentucky,” Collier said. She lives in Eolia in Letcher County, which has seen a sharp drop in mine production and employment.

David Boggs of nearby Cumberland echoed the hope that Trump will reverse the decline. “He’ll put the coal business back together and straighten this country up a little bit, maybe.”"

Quote :
"The “war on coal” still makes for politically potent rhetoric. However, it does not match well with facts. Executives at electric utilities say their move away from coal has more to do with economics than environmental regulation — natural gas is just cheaper. And since Election Day, some mining industry supporters have walked back their promises of a coal comeback."

Not to be insensitive but, fuck these morons. Not only are you not getting your coal jobs back, the Republicans you voted into office are going to strip away your healthcare and other assistance programs. Enjoy your comeuppance while the rich get richer!

It's more dire than that. He already had Priebus on Meet the press saying he wouldn't rule out a muslim registry, framing it as "more vetting" for "certain countries" with muslims (1/4 of the world is muslim).

Already they're hinting their position is that the US is at war with Islam (even as muslims are the primary group fighting ISIS). I think we could easily see a scenario where this rhetoric invigorates ISIS and AlQaeda, tipping the Muslims we were formerly working with against us, and we see both an increase in attacks against western targets, followed by the implementation of registries/camps/spying/torture.

And when this administration greenlights natural gas exports and the prices skyrocket, coal will become more economically viable.

If there was one thing everyone involved with his campaign should have drilled into Trump it was to stop using social media the day he won the election. I mean he should have stopped well before but especially now. He has proven he can't control himself with the snap responses to things and it is going to cause him tons of issues down the road.

At this point, we can start to accept the notion that looking or acting presidential is not a job requirement. The man is very flawed and has his issues, but I do think it will be refreshing to actually hear and read honest, unfiltered, and impulsive things than to deal with the whole political 'say something and nothing at the same time' spiel.

I would just prefer that those honest and impulsive things are directed internally at our nation. I worry his provacative talk won't bode well with other countries. It won't work all that well here either, but the right countries have much more geopolitical clout than half a nation of malcontents who ended up on the losing side of the election.

^ that's a very optimistic spin. The dude is taking more shots at Hamilton than Aaron Burr, filling his cabine with alt-right (i.e Christian Nationalists), and bringing his family members to meetings with foreign nationals to promote Trump hotels and other business ventures. And of course, there is the naked xenophobia and civil liberty abuses being floated around like that's normal.

This is third-world, banana republic shit and Trump has all of the hallmark tendencies of a leader who simply plans to loot the treasury and secure his long term financial success more than make any meaningful strides to "make America great again."

Nawww, man. This isn't normal. Nothing good will come from this presidency. Buckle up, man, we're in four some steady chop.

^ I'm just talking specifically about what he says, not so much about what he does. I am very concerned from that end of the spectrum about what he's doing and the people he's putting around him and into positions of power.

He really reminds me of Philippine president Rodrigo Duterte. Controversial figure, does things intentionally to rattle others. Cusses out foreign nationals. Heavy-handed on snuffing out drugs in his country, to the point that people are concerned about civil rights.

But yeah, it'll be a wild 4 years. I just hope that his administration does more talking than doing.

I like to compare Trump and past presidents to certain sports figures. Take Russell Wilson. Dude is a robot. Says all the right things. Reporters hate to cover him because they know exactly what's coming. Russell Wilson = Typical Politician.

Then take someone like Charles Barkley. He'd tell you if he played turrible, or if his team played turrible, or if his coach sucked, or that he was going to go to Las Vegas and party with Michael Jordan and blow 6 figures playing poker. He'll make fun of himself and his golf game and then give his opinion on something that he is not an expert at, even if no one asked him for it. Of course the media eats it all up because they have something interesting and fun to report on, even if they're trying to skewer their golden goose in the court of public opinion.

Yeah, maybe a lot of the things he says will be stupid. Or that he'll state opinions on things that we don't think should matter to the president. Why should our president talk about Hamilton? My president shouldn't be on ESPN showcasing his March Madness bracket! He needs to be doing his job! If you thought Obama wasn't doing his job because he did too many media tours and went golfing in Martha's Vineyard too much, (Mah gawd, the president should work 24/7/365 and never take a vacation for the next 4 years, we have too many problems!!!) prepare for a rude awakening.

I'm thinking we need to accept this new normal that we don't expect a certain amount of dignity and decorum into this position, since our voting patterns make it painfully obvious that what we say is important and what we do are not the same things.

You may not want to accept it, but look at who we just put in office. And now there will be political strategists from all over that will try to break down Trump's win into some sort of process or method to win elsewhere and in the future. He's just the first in a new wave of hacks that will want to insert themselves into politics, even if they have no business being in it in the first place.

And since anyone can vote, regardless of their education or whether they have a basic grasp of the role of government, I don't see things changing. I think we can blame our generation (and young Gen X) for changing perceptions of the ideal president.

Demagoguery has always been a viable election strategy.

This isn't new. It may be new to Americans, but much of the world is aware of the dangerous path of creeping fascism. Trump may have blazed a trail for hateful nationalists, but that's not something that should be normalized in American politics.
