^^In the short run jobs are created by increasing economic efficiency and therefore economic activity. It seems ridiculous to suggest bailing out inefficient firms will increase economic efficiency.

To put it another way, the position is that the bailouts cost jobs elsewhere in the economy, offsetting those immediately saved in the bailed out companies.

So the question is why do you think the Great Recession is still on-going with 9% unemployment? We argue it is due to suppression of private investment by regime uncertainty as government deficits and government takeovers have ravaged the financial sector and crony capitalism now dominates as cronies get waivers such as from Obamacare and their rivals face stiff regulatory burdens.

If you think Bush or Obama is the one giving orders, you're probably wrong.

The Senate has approved the indefinite military detention of domestic American citizens without trial.

Soon the veto of this single man will be the only thing preventing this from becoming reality(and a supreme court decision that is implemented with "all deliberate speed" if at all). This same single man that has already personally ordered the assassination of two American citizens without trial this year, suggesting his veto threat is more a response to perceived popularity than any true moral misgivings.

And you people doubt me when I suggest the end is near.

I think his position on that could be swayed with sufficient public outcry in an election year.

However, it would be vastly preferable to have public officials that support civil liberties without constantly being reminded to do so. Perhaps I'm naive.

Quote :
"For a while now, Obama's environmental record has been mixed—at times great, at others shoddy. But a new report (PDF), released Monday from the Center on Progressive Reform (CPR), suggests that when it comes to dismantling environmental reforms, Obama's administration is actually on par with that of former President George W. Bush. What’s worse, the report shows, is that their combined decade of damage has a common denominator: an elusive federal entity called the Office of Information and Regulatory Affairs (OIRA) that has, under the auspices of both administrations, waged war on environmental, health, and safety protections."

Quote :
"A few examples of OIRA's meddling: Though smog pollution—which has been linked to asthma and other lung conditions—has been steadily rising, OIRA struck down the EPA’s efforts to tighten regulations that would have reduced it. When a faulty ash pond in Kingston, Tennessee led to a coal ash spill that was, in quantity, larger than the BP spill, the EPA wrote stricter regulations for coal ash storage—but once OIRA got the draft, it watered the regulations down to the point that they're effectively useless. In both cases, OIRA backed its changes citing industry concerns that, the report explains, are based on incomplete research, and contradict the thorough reviews conducted by the EPA"

I may skip voting again this year

I just read the white house statement on his veto threat. It seems he opposes the bill not on civil rights terms, but because it takes power away from federal authorities, who are already detaining and assassinating American citizens without trial.

In any case (the senate at least) has more than enough votes to override a veto.

The country is too far gone. Even replacing every lawmaker currently up for election would not have prevented this political scenario. I don't know what to do.

In other words, Obama officials wanted the flexibility to militarily detain even U.S. citizens if they were so inclined, and are angry that this bill purports to limit their actions."

http://thehill.com/homenews/administration/197835-president-cancels-hawaii-trip-after-getting-blasted-by-romney

Quote :
"President Obama won't go to Hawaii while payroll tax is in limbo

President Obama is not vacationing in Hawaii with his wife and children while the extension of the payroll tax holiday remains in limbo, and has warned GOP congressional leaders to stay in town as well.

Obama had planned to fly to Hawaii with his family on Dec. 17 and stay there through New Year’s.

After getting ripped by GOP presidential candidate Mitt Romney over his vacation plans, Obama told Senate Democratic leaders Wednesday that he will stay in town until Congress finishes work on the payroll tax holiday, unemployment benefits and other issues.

Obama told Democratic leaders: “Michelle and the girls are going to have a great time in Hawaii, they don’t need me there,” according to Senate Majority Leader Reid (D-Nev.).

Romney blasted Obama’s vacation plans on Monday.

“I just think it’s time to have a president those idea of being ‘hands on’ doesn’t mean getting a better grip on the golf club,” Romney told potential caucus voters in Iowa.

Obama told leaders it would be unacceptable if House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) adjourned for Christmas next week without extending a 2-percentage point reduction of the payroll tax.

A White House official disputed the notion that Obama had altered his vacation plans because of Romney's criticism.

The official noted that Obama had already threatened to spend Christmas with Republicans in Washington if Congress failed to take action on payroll taxes.

“We’re going to keep pushing Congress to make this happen," Obama said Friday. "Now is not the time to slam the brakes on the recovery. Right now, it’s time to step on the gas. We need to get this done. And I expect that it’s going to get done before Congress leaves. Otherwise, Congress may not be leaving, and we can all spend Christmas here together.”

White House press secretary Jay Carney told reporters Tuesday that he would be surprised if Congress left town for the Christmas break without extending the payroll tax rate.

"The president said himself quite explicitly that he, if necessary, will - I think the phrasing was, be here through Christmas," according to a press report.

^haha. That's a terrible article.

He first alludes to Teddy Roosevelt, and then seamlessly uses that as a transition to compare Obama to Franklin Roosevelt, hoping to catch the reader off guard without realizing that they are two different people. And if that's not enough, he then compares him to Carter and gives the standard conservative cry of "Keynesian economics" and "Marxism." And he did all of that within one paragraph. It's as if the author thinks that Teddy Roosevelt, FDR, Carter, and Marx all had the exact same ethos.

I'm sure that appeases the flunkies who read his articles, though.

The truth is, Obama is not a Progressive. He's just not. Which is why its so fucking infuriating when his detractors yell "Marxist! Socialist!" at a president who's practically to the right of Ronald goddamn Reagan.

haha. just read the rest of the article. Puts all of the blame on Obama for federal spending without putting it into proper context and then makes an appeal to trickle-down supply side economics and bush tax cuts. Yeaaahh, real honest analysis, that stuff is.

oh, and here's the authors bio:

Quote :
"I am Director of Entitlement and Budget Policy for the Heartland Institute, General Counsel of Americans for Tax Reform, and Senior Fellow for the Carleson Center for Public Policy. I served in the White House Office of Policy Development under President Reagan, and as Associate Deputy Attorney General of the United States under President George H.W. "

Let's see. Reagan advisor. Director at a Conservative think tank, and Bush1 Advisor.

It's sad that the worker-bees in America eat this shit up even though it has actively worked against their own best interests for the past 30 years.

Great article yowillyo, what else you got for us?

All this bill does is clarifies powers the President already had and puts them into law. Is it a good thing? No, but enough with all the drama. This "shit" is these dumb fuckers defending their president at all costs-

Nothing more, nothing less-

It's funny that ignorant Republicans (that they hate) defended Bush (whom they hate) regarding the Patriot Act (which they hate) years ago in this exact same fashion. I assume in a few years they can be expected to be similarly ridiculed?

Or, you know, the truth. The United States isn't, and hasn't been for a very long time, the global standard for freedom and civil liberties. Again, we've been detaining American citizens for tens, if not hundreds of years. Remember internment camps for Japanese people during World War II? They didn't even have the luxury of being accused of terrorist activities first. Their only crime was looking like a Japanese person.

Talk to someone who hasn't lived here for most of their lives, and you'll find that we are the laughing stock of the developed (and most of the non-developed) world on basically every social issue. Look at our healthcare system for god sakes. When I tell my Canadian relatives that I have to spend $1500 out of my own pocket before my coverage kicks in, they look at me like a crazy person. Yesterday, I paid $75 for a band-aid, some neosporin, and a piece of paper referring me to specialist for a lesion on my knee. And I'm sure I'll get another bill in the mail for that "service".

I don't "support" Obama because I thought he would reverse decades of conservative fuckery on day one. I voted for him because I wanted to stem the tide, and at least start things moving in the other direction. Despite being having to prioritize the failing economy (which by the way, has added jobs literally every single month he's been President, after losing 7-8 million at the tail end of the previous administration) Dubya dropped at his feet, he's done that on many issues including health care, education, and foreign policy. And he's done it with half the legislative branch opposing every single policy he's proposed, not on merit, but simply because he's the one proposing them. Given the extraordinary circumstances surrounding his Presidency, including having to hold a fucking press conference on his eligibility to be President 2 years AFTER being elected, he's definitely met my expectations.
