goFigure, I really like that last shot. My only suggestion would be to crop off the bottom portion of the shot, at least the bottom right. Clone out the power lines too, or crop just above them.
Too bad you can't reshoot...a pano with the clouds and blue sky would have been pretty cool. 1/19/2009 11:30:11 AM |

^^ we were in Utah for a week... we say Zion NP, Bryce canyons NP, Arches NP, Canyonlands,
I have 1k+ pictures after deleting ~500 and my dad has just as many for a P&S... this includes shots of Just the sky...
if you have days of time... I'm currently handpicking and going to make a much more focused set of pictures... All are as they were shot without any correction yet. http://community.webshots.com/user/bholford_west
day1 = boring (NC-Mo) day2 = StL Arch + some pretty parts of Mo and Iowa when I was shooting with the ultrawide and ruined a lot of shots shooting through the car window day3 = SD, Badlands day4 = mt rushmore, wyoming (once again ruined a lot of REALLY awesome shots shooting through the car window where the dash is being reflected) day5 = Montana and Yellowstone (I think I learned by this point to stop using the ultrawide in the car and was using a polarizer to get rid of the window reflection) day6 = SNOWMOBILING IN YELLOWSTONE!!! day7 = Idaho, Utah day8 = Utah, arches1 day9 = Utah, Arches2, Canyonlands (Really REALLY awesome) day10 = Utah, Bryce NP, day11 = Utah, Zion NP, Grand Canyon (was hazing and kinda sucked) 1/19/2009 11:39:46 AM |

FYI, Lauren Greenfield will be in NC next month. She's a really cool photojournalist and very well known internationally. She's having a lecture at Meredith and RCC. I'm not sure if the lecture at Meredith is open outside of that school. The one at RCC is completely free and open to the public so come if you want and bring a friend, hang out with the RCC photog's and see our studio. I'll give anyone here a tour of the place.

i'm going to the inauguration tomorrow, non ticketed so i won't be super close to any ceremonies. i have only a 18-55 and a 55-200VR. rules say no camera bags so i gotta carry the camera around my neck and the extra lense in a pocket which is prett shitty. thoughts on which lense or both to bring? Im leaning toward the 55-200,b ut the wide would def be nice for crowd shots. and i'm sure i'll see crowds... 200mm might still be too short to see anything significant from where i'll likely be. hrm 1/19/2009 11:00:04 PM |

What are the best settings to take pix of the snow under? I searched a bit on google, just finding random answers. I know my D40 isn't going to have the clearest pictures, but I'd like to at least try.

[polite constructive criticism] Kiwi, the snow pic you posted has got a major blue/green hue to it. It's seriously the only thing I see when I look at it [/polite constructive criticism] I'll try not to call you on the extreme angled crop anymore because I like to use it...selectively...too.
1/20/2009 9:58:22 PM |
JBaz All American 16764 Posts user info edit post |
extreme crop angles are only bad when it doesn't help the composition or design elements of a photo. If it adds value to the photo, then it's ok. If not, then you have to ask yourself, "why did I crop it this way? and what could work better?".
Some stuff from my photo expedition today.

my fiancee' Dad gave me his trusty ol' Pentax MG 35mm SLR today. its pretty sweet, but i think its broken. It won't snap a pic. the shutter button does nothing and something is loose inside the body. It makes sort of a slapping/clunking noise when i shake it front to back. Its not battery dependent (at least in fixed shutter speed and bulb modes) so its not that. Its in excellent cosmetic condition and it worked the last time he used it, about 7 years ago.
Any random ideas? 1/21/2009 12:00:28 AM |

^^^ I have an old Minolta SRT101 that has some kind of foam gasket on the back of the mirror plate (it's either there for light tightness or damping). It's old enough that the foam has dryrotted and the mirror sticks in the up position from the adhesive that's left under the foam.
after that happened, it pulled part of the mirror linkage out of alignment. So it could be there's something that's gotten disconnected. does the mirror move?
^ I get more of an old-picture vibe from the color cast in the first one.

meh, not a lot to be stoked about in this batch...it was my dog's first experience with snow and most of this is just cliché winter pics
the biggest problem is that my dog is so dark while the snow was so white...the shots without any editing were okay, i guess, but she always looked like a dark blob without definition...if i reduce the contrast to pull out her lines, everything becomes flat...if i increase the exposure or brightness, the snow loses definition...bah
suggestions?

^shooting raw? if so there is probably still some detail in the dark spots. what software are you using? most have a "Fill Light" parameter that lightens in the shadows a little. works pretty darn well. 1/21/2009 4:05:24 PM |

Why not highlight the dog and reduce contrast in that area only?

using the Fill Light scroll option on the main/exposure tab is very useful, you can also gain similar effect with the level adjustment and just play around with the mid tones/shadow values. Even shooting raw on a p&s yields a lot of info that you can use to manipulate it a lot. IQ suffers a bit if you are just compensating for technical errors, but sometimes, you can't predict everything. 1/21/2009 6:16:29 PM |

holy fuck i just updated to LR 2.2 with the new Adobe camera 'Camera' profiles. What a huge difference. My Nikon conversions look MUCH better with the new profiles. Supposedly the 'Camera' profiles are intended to match the camera manufacturer's conversion software more closely. I've been reading up and the new profiles are pretty dead on compared to the Nikon Capture NX software. This is really great.
So yeh, make sure you pay attention to your camera profiles... 1/22/2009 12:14:19 PM |
