Well come on now, it's a pretty epic fuck up. You just shouldn't have complete widespread system crashes from every single unit like this. 3/1/2010 2:27:34 PM |

i lol at the fact that it seems they are banking on this idea that at 6pm Central the problem will fix itself. 3/1/2010 2:40:13 PM |

Most likely the problem will go away when internal clock moves to valid date, and Sony will announce they "fixed" the problem for all the plebes, then release a firmware update that silently fixes the problem for the future.
In the mean time, this shit is pretty hilarious.

If what is being said is accurate - that the problem causes the internal clock to move back to 1/1/2000, then how is it going to move to a valid date on its own? If an NTP update will override the internal clock, then it should have fixed itself fast enough that there would have been nothing more than a blip.3/1/2010 2:59:29 PM |

The internal clock didn't move to 1/1/2000, it moved to 02/29/2010. Since that's not a valid date as far as the PS3 is concerned, it caused some error which reset every PS3's calendar to 12/31/1999. The thinking is that once the internal clock moves on to 03/01/2010 , everything should go back to normal.
As a side note, some people have already fixed their PS3s by opening them up and unplugging it's equivalent of a CMOS battery, essentially resetting it to a valid date. There is no reason to think it won't be the same with everyone else once either a fix comes through, or this simply resolves itself.

Shrike All American 9594 Posts user info edit post |
^^No, do not do that. This is has nothing to do with being able to connect to the internet or not. It's possible some of your games will work just fine, but you could potentially corrupt the save files of certain games. Not being able to connect to the PSN is a symptom, not the cause.

so if the slim ps3s arent affected, they must have known about some issue, and fixed it for those. 3/1/2010 3:43:43 PM |
Shrike All American 9594 Posts user info edit post |
They probably just switched to a different vendor for the chips that are causing the problem, or the vendor themselves realized the problem and corrected it themselves(possibly without telling Sony that the problem ever existed). Either way, they should have known this was coming and been pro-active in resolving it. 3/1/2010 3:47:59 PM |

I don't either. The trophies are cumbersome to understand and not really worth the effort. I don't care much about my gamerscore either, but it's easier to say "My score is 5000" than it is to say "I have 8 platinum trophies and 20 gold ones".3/1/2010 4:21:02 PM |

Shrike: Is that shirt actually available? Or is it just someone's mock-up.
If it isn't available, then Sony needs to jump on it. Solid way for them to rebuild good faith would be helping make fun of the problem.
Also, what are the odds that Sony didn't see this coming at all? 3/2/2010 12:32:39 PM |

yes. PS3 has returned to normal.
There is no "fix", it fixed itself. Look for a firmware update soon to correct that error so this doesn't happen next year.

A small ARM Syscon CPU dedicated to menial tasks within the PlayStation 3 was known to have an issue dealing with leap years. The same piece of silicon had a history of causing similar aggravation for mobile devices with the likes of Zune and some Blackberry devices afflicted. In those cases, MSFT and RIMM were on top of the issue. Sony, unfortunately, was not." |

^^ See, after the other problems I have a hard time believing Sony wouldn't have been on top of the issue.
It just kinda feels like feigned ignorance to keep them from having to actually react long enough for it to blow over.
Like none of them knew quite how to handle the situation, so they just played dumb. 3/2/2010 2:33:14 PM |

It'll be interesting to see how the tech compares to the Wii and whether it can do 1:1 motions.
