today is my last day at my company. IT contacted me earlier in the week about my phone number (I use Lync to connect via phone) and I told them Friday is my last day. Well I log in this morning and am trying to get my phone to work so I can dial into a teleconference.....come to find out IT already disconnected my phone number. I emailed IT and they're like, "oh when you said today was your last day I assumed you weren't going to need your phone."

1. Doesn't matter. it's still a class, and the lacrosse team is not.
2. Requires notification? From whom? To whom?
3. So every teacher is now required to inform every possible coach of any possible conflicts with their class and the sports team? Ooooooooooor, the kids in the class and the sport should inform the coach of the conflicts? Now, if the teacher sprung this on the kids last second (which I seriously doubt she did), then you've got something...

1. it does matter. this performance is after school impeding on my time.
2. if a teacher wants some kids to miss a game then they need to notify me. I will probably still tell them no.
3. see above. also, it is standard practice to inform the entire faculty/staff of things like this via memo, which was not done.

additionally, reading between the lines these kids WERE informed and they chose to participate in the game. they are both starters and people don't earn starting positions lightly. this teacher decided to circumvent their (and their parents) decision at the last minute, or at least that's how i'm reading it.

it still matters. a CLASS always takes precedence over sports. Could she have sent a memo? Sure. It was still her students that should have let you know. So the kids knew and wanted to blow it off and didn't tell you about it at all? And you're blaming the teacher? Sounds to me like you need to have a conversation with your "star" players and set some better expectations.

Seriously, you think your shitty little after school activity is more important than a class. Stop and think about that. No matter how unimportant you think orchestra is, it's still a class, which means it takes precedence over sports. If a teacher didn't want to allow a makeup test for your team for some odd reason, I'd bet they could probably do it (even if every other teacher thought they were a dick for it). The kids can't just get out of a responsibility of a class, and, believe it or not, playing in concerts is one of those responsibilities, "credit" or not. I've never been in a music class where you could skip the concert without a damned good reason (death in the family), and we've had plenty of athletes in those classes, too. The ONLY instance where I've seen athletes be allowed to skip a "performance" was marching band and football, and the teacher kind of knew about that from the beginning. Get your players under control, man.

yes, , because you think your sport takes precedence over a class! go up to a teacher and tell them your precious star player doesn't have to take a test if he doesn't feel like it. see how that works out.

^^Athletes often do miss class if they are travelling. it is of course their responsibility to make up any missed work, including tests.

I'm sorry that you are this out of touch. Athletics is a vital and integrated part of school.

right, they make up schoolwork. how do you "make up" a concert that you missed? *crickets*

and if they might get into colleges because of the sport, then maybe they should do a better job keeping their coach informed of shit like this.

dude. why is this so hard for you to comprehend? A PERFORMANCE IS THE ULTIMATE FUCKING PURPOSE OF THE GOD DAMNED CLASS. Saying it's not part of the class would be like saying games are not a part of sports. Yes, it's not "graded," because the teacher isn't gonna go around and give numerical grades for how everyone performed, but it's part of the class because it's set up as an expectation from the first day: you are expected to be at all performances. GET OVER IT and tell your players that they need to inform you of shit like this. Did the teacher not tell the kids about the concert until a week beforehand? No? Well then THEY KNEW and didn't tell you about it.

Sports do NOT come before classes. If you don't like that fact, then don't be a coach at a school.

^^Being just a little bit more informed about the situation than you are, I'm going to have to disagree with you.

^Lacrosse is not a sport one plays to become a professional athlete, however it has been opening up educational opportunities for many of our players over the past few years.

not participating in their recital would be like only practicing on your non-important team and never playing in a game. they only have a couple performances with orchestra, so its a bigger deal to miss that than a lacrosse game.

also, why are you assuming that they can get into school b/c lacrosse but not orchestra? how do you know they don't have scholarship offers for orchestra? its no different than your activity, except you want them to miss a much larger percentage of their orchestra performances than the percentage they would miss of your lacrosse performances.

ok, then enlighten me. Explain how an orchestra performance is NOT an expected part of orchestra class. Is she taking the kids to watch someone else's performance? Did someone call her a week before and say "hey, can your kids come play here on Friday?" Please. Explain how the culminating event for several months of work in a class is not a part of the class. Please, I'm waiting!

I've already explained to you that this is NOT part of their grade. This is why the orchestra teacher had to email me asking for them to play. I'm done discussing this with you. (either way, it's a workplace annoyance)

IT DOESN'T MATTER IF IT'S PART OF THEIR GRADE, IT'S PART OF THE CLASS. Why can't you understand this? It's not a part of their grade BECAUSE YOU CAN'T GRADE IT. It's just set up as an expectation from day one! Kind of like playing in games is an expectation of a sports team. And she wasn't "emailing you to ask if they could play." She was emailing you, as a courtesy, to tell you that they wouldn't be playing.

Say it with me: It's. Part. Of. The. Class.

don't you see? He'd gladly use a roster spot on his team and spend time on a kid that told him from day one he was never going to actually show up to the games. Smath would totally keep another kid from joining the team to spend time coaching and helping improve the skills of a kid who never had any intention of attending a game.

Arguing over semantics ad nauseum..oy.

As a coach, you have every right to be annoyed, and this is the place for workplace annoyances. That said, it should be up to the kids to pick where they want to be. Both you and the other teacher should accept their choice without any added pressure to go one way or the other.

That said, if I was in your shoes, outside of a playoff game, I'd nudge them to do the orchestra.

Ugh this is high school for me all over again. With my performance schedule I just could not do any sports I wanted to and teachers just never communicated with each other. I would get tapped to perform at random places and I would have to miss something else. The only place that would work for my singing schedule would be my evening dance school, but I had dance 4 nights a week anyway and never got behind.

The people arguing with Smath are being idiots. This is his work annoyance, coworkers are annoying and then mix in non-communication and

why are you assuming they were not planning on participating in the orchestra the entire time, and just didn't say anything because they are just kids and were nervous someone would go complain about it on the internet

maybe they have college recruiters coming to see their recital for scholarship offers

That same teacher sprung another name on me TODAY after school. (the recital thing is tomorrow)

The three players had made their decision to play in the game before I was contacted by the teacher. (as I suspected)

i've spoken with all of the parents, and even they had no idea about this concert until last week.

'Tis too warm in the office. All of the areas of the building that aren't individual offices (i.e. the 75% that are large offices with cubes) are centrally controlled, and I believe someone did not take into account it being nearly 70 degrees today.

The fucking ratio of toilet paper roll weight to ply thickness/durability is just incorrect.

It's fine about halfway through the giant ass roll, but if the roll is new, it's like you are making confetti in the stall. By the end of the day theres little piles of it under each stall.
