A few my friend took with a Panasonic TZ5 during a hike in the Wind River Range this past summer. During lunch these hummingbirds just flew and started sampling the bright colors of our bags. Luckily my buddy had his camera handy mine was in the bag .

I just purchased a book written by Michael Freeman called "The Photographer's Eye: Composition and Design for Better Digital Photos"
I'm excited about it. Anyone know of this book? 1/27/2009 11:41:15 PM |

Nope. I'm sure you know better than he does anyway. At least you will as soon as you realize what you do is wrong according to him. Then you'll accuse him of being an elitist dick. Why bother reading it?
Sweet ringflash Rob. I want one. I am gonna beat up Jbaz and steal his.

Any of you Nikon guys use CaptureNX 2?
Man, i just took the Pepsi Challenge and I must say, CaptureNX2 rocks the socks off LightRoom as far as image quality. My pics look fanstastic with it by default. I don't touch a single thing and theyre perfect. Better than i can do (and did on my old pics) in an hour with LR2. Better colors and tones, sharper, more detail in the highlights and lowlights. No shit, WOW!
But what a wrench this throws into my workflow... Capture doesnt have any Library parts.. and I'm so used to LR now.. gah, wtf.
Any ideas?

What is the Pepsi Challenge?
I use CS3 so nooooooooo clue, and I guess I'm weird but I treat each picture individually, slow as hell but whatever. 1/28/2009 12:39:28 AM |

Give that free trial (60 days) a shot and let me know what you think.
PS and LR both use the same ACR. Are you using the latest camera profiles for ACR 5.3? I'd def recommend that, the "Camera Standard" or "Camera Vivid" are the ones you want to use. But still, they don't touch CaptureNX2 imo.
This is amazing. 1/28/2009 12:46:09 AM |

Most "digital" books tend to focus on some post processing techniques so that's usually photoshop. Film post processing techniques are well... the darkroom.
If anyone is interested, The book we use at my school is called "Photography: second edition, by Bruce Warren". It's an older book from 2002, but has a lot of the fundamentals and basically covers everything. Very informative and a good resource to have. There's a lot more info on film processes than digital but it's worth the $30 used from Amazon.
Some instructors have recommended two other lighting books and a color management book, but we haven't got to the material yet so I donno what they are. Our program shifted as they are trying to shift more towards digital technology. They still heavily rely on medium and large formats, which their digital versions are finally catching speed.1/28/2009 4:08:38 AM |

I just ordered this the other day, really looking forward to it. Apparently there are a lot of good lighting tips techniques in it.

all i see is the bride leaning on something... a horrible arm pose (elbow crease bulge) no real expression or feeling in the picture.
the background looks like black stuff on black stuff with spots of light and black stuff.....
i see you still know nothing about light....

Here's my Dakota for the page
omg angles! hehe I was actually playing with my new softlighter. In trying to figure out the proper distance to subject, I ended up with the umbrella pretty darn close to Dakota's head. Sooo to keep it out of the frame I crawled up close to dakota and apparently canted the camera when I snapped a shot. juuuust a bit. 1/28/2009 6:31:30 PM |

lmao well honestly I don't mind some angles! but this one of Dakota annoys the ever living heck outta me. I keep wanting to rotate and crop but I can't b/c there's no extra dead space to crop away! All things considered though, this was the best shot of the quick [learning] session. 1/28/2009 6:55:14 PM |

and the starburst type, spider (gross) reflection is from the umbrella. I'll have to put the diffuser on to keep that reflection from showing up. the other reflection (in her right eye) is a piece of white foam board that I used as a cheapo reflector for fill. 1/28/2009 7:27:26 PM |
