before i changed divisions, we had open concept work spaces with floors full of two-person un-assigned tables without any kind of divisions or dividers. you got an assigned large drawer to keep things in, but you couldn't keep them at your desk. every table had a laptop stand and monitor, it was like working in a library every day.

that shit was annoying

(oh, and they removed trashcans from the floors so we would reduce how much trash we generated. so every day you had to take any trash out with you and drop it off on your way out, which usually meant all the way in the parking garage unless you wanted to swing into a bathroom)

Sometimes it's hard to judge if it's the end of the usual coffee drinking hour. I've made pots before that nobody drank, so I don't want to be wasteful if everyone's done. But we had a pretty small office.

Same, I don't really want to waste coffee. I also don't know when the next rush is since I only drink in the morning, so the pot would probably be luke warm for the next person.

Co-worker (non hockey fan) wins awesome tickets to the Hurricanes game tonight via a company giveaway. Of course he isn't going to go, and is selling the tickets on his Facebook page...

Lame, my mom's coworker did that with box seat tickets and everyone was pretty pissed when two strangers showed up in the company suite.

The last place I worked at had bought these huge carafes from a restaurant supply for making coffee. There were only 23 people in the company, so it was unlikely you'd get the end of the pot and have to make a new one.

They'd buy the absolute cheapest coffee though, so I eventually brought in a 1 cup french press and made my own.

Selling your tickets to a box when you're awarded them as a morale-boosting incentive/opportunity to schmooze your co-workers is not too smart though.

Seriously. Makes you look like an ass.

They only give away nosebleed seats at my workplace. We find out the day of and everyone fights for them. Lame.

These are club level (200), front row, center aisle seats. $130 each day of game...I really want them.

When everyone shows up to the meeting two hours late, half of them are breastfeeding, and a rooster wanders in and starts crowing while I try to talk.

I think management gets offered free tickets from time to time by our patent office, any from what I know they either use them or pass them on to us.

It could be that they just keep them all for themselves though, I dunno

Bahaha the douchebag ended up giving the tickets to a friend for free. Why would you put up an ad for something and in the first sentence say you got it for free. Karma, beotch.

configuration labels in software that are auto-generated based on the detected environment, instead of the actual configuration. That was a great waste of 2 hours!

working with a newbie engineer-type at a customer's facilities, who has been completely behind the curve the entire time. Tried using him as the go-to contact for a bit, then they replaced him with a better guy. He magically pops back in the picture today, asking for data that was handled two weeks ago.

Why?

as far as the tickets go...I completely agree in that situation given it is a company box.

I did a couple days worth of labor for Habitat for Humanity for my company and won two tickets (not a box or particularly good tickets either, just two random tickets they got off stubhub) they were giving away to someone who helped out that weekend. It was to this year's SC vs Clemson football game and I literally had 5 emails and a voicemail or two already waiting for me Monday morning at work. I sold them to the first coworker that contacted me for about 40% of what they were worth and didn't even think twice about selling them. I don't really see my situation as being in poor taste (and still don't) but now I'm second-guessing what others may have thought. I know for a fact people sell ipads, ipods, and other random things they win from raffles at work.

My point was mostly that if you're going to make a profit off tickets your company gave you that were presumably aimed at team-building/socialization, it's pretty stupid to sell tickets in a company box, where the outsiders are going to be very obvious and they'll know you valued a few bucks more than company involvement.

yeah I totally agree in that situation. I could never do that. Even if I couldn't go I'd give them to someone else at the company for free.

Sounds like people would prefer $100 that they could spend on anything they wanted instead of tickets to a sport they might not even care about.

Congrats for all your hard work. We got you tickets to the Monster Jam. Heck, even that would be better than a hockey game.

A. It would not be better than a hockey game.
B. The company has the suite for every single event. It's not like they physically buy suite tickets to every game.

past few years we have been pushed to use technology in our classrooms, had multiple professional development sessions on using cell phones as a tool, and they have been implemented into many classes extremely well.

email yesterday from the principal: "no cell phones are to be used in the classroom. if you think there is a legitimate academic reason to use them, contact your administrator and we can help you find other ways to get the same tasks accomplished without the use of cell phones.

Listening to this one woman talk about the details of her divorce every morning in the office to another co-worker, who is across the hall from me. Either shut the damn door to talk or don't air out your personal shit!

My co-worker complains that she doesn't have enough time to do all her projects ... but she didn't come in until 10:00 today.

The rest of the office comes in between 8:00 and 8:30. Why does she think she's so fucking special?

Office mate has been working on a superfluous spreadsheet every day, majority of the day, for what seems like the past two months. The spreadsheet is completely useless and a waste of time, and whatever he's trying to accomplish is taking 10x longer because he's inept at computers.

But, it seems to make him happy, because every once in a while he will say to himself "YES, I AM A GENIUS!" and "YES, IT WORKS!!".

We have a new post doc who has twice the education I have and I had to show her how to put figures together in Photoshop. You'd think as a post-doc she's published at least one paper already and have used PS to present her figures. Also had to show her how to normalize data in Excel.

..so a few days ago, while working..my blowhose and swivel caught on my torch marver when I leaned over to change the song on my iphone. This caused the hose to pull the handle through my clenched hand until it stopped at the large molten gather at the end of the blowtube. Happened so fast and I dropped it instantly, but I still managed to roast every finger on my right hand. Its been quite annoying to work with a fried hand..almost healed though
..and my shopmate listens to some horrible shit

^^ Our lab is cheap.

I think some of the computers do have Illustrator but I don't do the final figures, so maybe they are on Illustrator when we are ready to submit. But for work in progress meetings, PS does the job.

And I do fucking hate Excel. For analysis we use GraphPad, but we are too cheap to purchace license, but trying to convince manager it's worth it. We've exhausted all but 2 computers for the 30 day trial.

^^ who are you, Johnny Tremain?

anyway, spent almost the entire day switching my working copies to the new "branch" of our code for the next release. On a normal computer, this process, involving making backup copies and then switching the originals, would take 30min to an hour. Here, it takes almost 8 hours, because of the stupid fucking encryption on machines that never leave the god damned office. Complete waste of a day.

Then again, the guy beside me spent two days "making the new branch" because the person who made the last one was a fucktard and "created the branch" by making a new folder in the branches directory and then directly copying the files into the new folder. Hey, thanks for making the merge back to the trunk impossible!

My boss calling my coworker a crackbaby. Not annoying for me really but I am sure it is pissing him off.

Good news he also brought to our attention that if a guy uses crack while the girl he knocked up is pregnant that it can make the baby addicted to crack.
