Played with a lot of heart. Needed to play with a lot of heart and a consistent back line. At least we didn't have a goal waived off.
Sad, but I still think it was a great historic run and there's plenty of interesting matches ahead. Awesome run USA!

Six players from the 2008 Olympic squad were on the 2010 World Cup squad
Michael Bradley, Maurice Edu, Brad Guzan, Jozy Altidore, Suart Holden, and Benny Feilhaber
Eight players from the 2006 World Cup squad were on the 2010 World Cup squad.
Tim Howard, Carlos Bocanegra, Steve Cherundolo, Clint Dempsey, DaMarcus Beasley, Marcus Hahanemann, Landon Donovan, and Oguchi Onyewu
In the end they choked against Africa again. 6/26/2010 5:26:50 PM |

Man,
Guzan, Holden, Onyewu, Beasley, Hahanemann sure choked.
Blame this loss one who it belongs to: Ricardo Clark and by extension Bob Bradley.

it's just a shame that our response to giving up early goals and chances was just "we need to focus." How about starting the players that spark turnarounds in every single game? No reason for Findley/Clark to start in this game and that's not even something you can only say looking back at the result of this game. EVERYBODY who knew shit knew that Clark was a fucking liability, especially after the England game
on the bright side, we've got the core back for 2014 + Davies (who should be a star, wherever he's playing in 4 years) 6/26/2010 5:34:52 PM |

Tough loss, and our early defensive struggles finally caught up to us. It's a shame, but I'm seriously proud of this team.
Landon, I'm sorry that I ever doubted you. Even though you played like crap in '06, you were absolutely baller for the past year and a half for the USA.
The future is bright for US soccer, I'm sure of it.

ghana sucks but because of their speed they were able to run circles around our 3rd class athletes. Its so frustrating not to have any elite american athletes choose soccer. We have three players capable of playing well at this level. None are elite. They hadn't even scored a goal before today. They have no feet or ball skills. They just have speed and defense and not even a good goalie. If we had decent speed, we win. Uruguay will beat them.

Those weren't open play goals. The only reason they scored open play goals against us is because our guys are slow as fuck and got outran on "deep balls". They still haven't scored a conventional goal. Today was the equivalent to go routes in football getting tds against slow dbs. 6/26/2010 7:14:10 PM |

What the hell do you mean by "conventional goal"? They beat their defensemen and used power and skill to put it past the keeper into the net. Both of their goals were sensational. i think one of the keys to ghana's victory today was their exceptional defense on our crosses. i can't remember us winning more than a handful of balls in the box on crosses all day and we had plenty of balls sent in. we aren't the biggest up front, but ghana made us look tiny. 6/26/2010 8:44:50 PM |

Why is this country so terrible at developing strikers? Coming from a culture that's so offensively minded, you'd think we'd be able to develop guys that have a nose for the goal. Instead, our best strikers play in the midfield and our forwards continue to languish.
In some circles, a good defense is a good offense. If teams were more worried about our offensive game, we'd hopefully force teams to be a little more defensive and help the back line a little more. 6/26/2010 9:10:53 PM |

It's too damn bad we didn't have any subs to use in extra time for some energy because our incompetent coach used two subs early to make what should have been the OBVIOUS lineup from the beginning. Actually, that's not even true. The obvious lineup would have had gooch in it. He couldn't have done worse than bornstein and he probably could have challenged for some of those crosses.
I still don't know why it took the guy three games to even get Edu in. And then when Edu plays solid, he still sits his ass on the bench.
We need a real fucking coach. We are still a fairly young team and we could show alot better without Bob Bradley.

ATHLETICISM. they were clearly better faster stronger athletes but less skilled. again. nfl.

Once you're past the defense its easy to score. They used speed to get by the defense with the ball in the air on both goals. There were no "foot moves" or long shots. They were the equivalent of fastbreak transition layups in basketball or go route burns in football.
Conventional goals are ones you see when the real teams play. Where the defense is back and someone kicks it in, one times it or heads it in. Not this run past everyone to the goal business. We suck at conventional goals because we have no forwards.6/26/2010 9:45:08 PM |

Yeh I know, but it is some sort of curse or something. We also blew it against Morocco during the 2006 send off series in our own nation. Maybe the African gods are still pissed that we locked their people up and shipped them to the South to be used as slaves.6/26/2010 10:04:41 PM |

^^ eh, I hear that, but he did fine against england's strikers and I'd still contend that he couldn't do worse than bornstein. You can make up for lack of speed by not being out of position constantly, again like bornstein was.
And with the way we got beat in the air on every single set piece, his contributions there would have been no small thing.
I don't even hold anything against clark. The guy was just clearly out of his league and it's a damn shame that bradley decided to shit on Edu the way he did this tournament.
Michael Bradley, on the other hand, was our star IMO and I'm excited to see him lead the team in 2014. Hopefully his dad won't be around.

We'll have to agree to disagree. In the England game, I saw clark get beat hard on the first ball to heskey, gooch slid over to cover and gerrard snuck in behind him.
Heskey and Rooney are both pretty speedy and he was a big part of basically shutting them down the rest of the game. What he lacks in speed, I think he makes up for in physicality and knowing where to be--two things bornstein lacks big time. And that doesn't even count him on the offensive end for set pieces.
^Overall, I'd agree. Clearly, the two big problems were Clark and Findley. I just thought I would throw in Gooch since I was on a roll listing Bradley's fuckups.

I thought Bornstein had a pretty decent two games actually but whatever. I love the guy, but Howard deserves more criticism for the goals today than he's getting - if he's really a world class keeper (which I think he is) he should make those saves today.
Bob did better than I thought he'd do:
Positives: Gambled with Torres, dropped Gooch when it was obvious he couldn't hang, made aggressive changes at halftime when he needed to (forced into these because of going down 2-0 against Slovenia and needing a goal against Algeria, but still)
Negatives: Clark (and with that, didn't start our best pairing in Edu/Bradley). Stuck with the Findley experiment too long. Holden didn't play a minute.
But 4 years for an international coach is enough, regardless of results. It's time for a change and I'd be all for Klinsmann or anybody that isn't already part of the MLS/college setup - I'd love for an outsider's perspective to mold our young group of players.
basically this:
Quote : | "Bob Bradley has shown that he’s very good at identifying problems on the pitch and finding a solution with a change in tactics and/or personnel midway through games, but he doesn’t seem to learn lessons from game to game. The starting XI tonight was wrong, evidenced by the fact that he was forced to make two changes before 46 of the 120 minutes had been played. Had he fielded Edu and Feilhaber from the off, and been able to make changes to freshen up the side in the second half, who knows what might have been?" |

there has been some insinuation that howard had a chance at both goals
no way on the second one...he was on angle, down and ready to explode, and just couldn't react fast enough
the weird thing about the first one wasn't so much the positioning as the decision-making that led to the positioning. howard was definitely cheating on the far post thing, which would make sense in a one-on-one situation; a short side goal is never acceptable, so it makes sense to cheat for the far post. the problem is that in this situation, demerit was shading boateng on the far side, which should allow howard to cheat to the near post
