Oh and I also found out today I'm shooting the Wake@Miami Men's bball game as well wednesday.
pressure pressure, I haven't shot for the paper at all and now I'm covering at least two games in four days for 'em. should the 70-300 4-5.6 indeed be somewhat sufficient for shooting BBall?
I'll keep the 11-16 ready for a court rush

Damn straight. I'm having more fun here than I ever did at NCSU. Plus who'd complain about $600 a semester? Cheap as fuck and RCC is like rated #3 in the nation. The photog program has been around for more than 40 years, most of the instructors are past students and still working pro's. They don't teach us BS and more than half of the time, it's not in any textbook. It truly feels likes like an apprenticeship than real school.
If anyone here is serious about taking a degree in it, RCC is the best in NC. It's inline with Brooks and a few others, although it's a bit limited since it's only a 2-yr program. A number of graduates actually go to Brooks and other 4 yr photo programs to increase their education, but most just go straight into their field of business. I think most entry positions that our photog's go into are well in the 50-60k ranges. More so than often is they skip the entry level positions after they've done an internship or co-op, which are required.
Plus the connections here and possibilities are huge. Don't get me wrong, it's a lot of work in 2yrs, it's basically a 4 yr program squeezed into 2 years (summers included) so we don't exactly get a lot of time off.1/30/2009 10:13:38 AM |

Ok so I n00bed myself with my 50mm f1.4 purchase...
I thought that the rainbow effect in the macro picture of the lens was a result of the curvature of the lens as opposed to internal clouding...
I got the lens and found out that there is only a small portion of the lens that actually is pristine and there are significant scratches to the internal layers...
I'm going to contact the seller and see if he's willing to do anything about it, but I kinda doubt he will be willing. 1/30/2009 3:16:58 PM |

me too, but it's still a good picture, i like the way the skull's sutures came out
you should only commit to a expensive 4 year (still really really long for photoschool, aren't most 2-3 years? (even photojournalism?)) if you are already pretty good/have a good eye for it and you want to become professionally top notch polished.
otherwise you're just wasting money.
i too would suggest going the CC route.

UNC Chapel Hill has a good program for Photojournalism. My sister landed a job with NPR's "The Story" with Dick Gordon, from that program. She does publicity stuff for them.

^yeah they do. My bro graduated there with dual majors in graphic design and journalism. Really hard to get into, but well worth it if you are going that route. They don't really have a very good photo program since they mostly focus on the story instead of the picture. I think their course only requires like 2 photo classes, then design labs, that's it. Pretty sparse considering they have an array of Canon MkIII's and tons of glass. Such a shame. I just wish NCSU had some sort of journalism/photo program degree. The only real classes or teachings is through the technician or design school, and both are lacking a lot, then again, Bradley can only do soo much. They really are underfunded and understaffed.
I went to the National Geographic lecture back in November there, was really cool. They do get some great journalist speakers, cept we get Laura Greenfield next month... If anyone is seriously interested about going, you can PM if you need a place to stay and crash on the couch or floor in the living room.

That's a sweet lens. A buddy at work has one, let me shoot a holiday event we had here at work with it. Super quiet, really fast and accurate AF.
Just picked up the Tamron 28-75 f/2.8 a couple weeks ago. Another friend at work had it and didn't need it anymore, so I got a great deal on it. Sweet lens, I haven't taken it off my camera since.

it really is a work horse lens, a bit heavy though for a walk around lens. I may have to send mine back in since it's really soft wide open, but stop it down to f/4 and it's sharp as a tack. It was tack sharp wide open when I first got it... So I donno. Time for a service checkup I suppose. 1/30/2009 4:39:05 PM |

The Canon 70-200 f/2.8 is a staple lens for basketball photography. It's Bright, has a constant aperture throughout its zoom range, and has super fast, quiet, and accurate AF. Out of 8 of us shooting at a basketball game last night, 7 were using the Canon 70-200 f/2.8. The one person that didn't have one shot Nikon. Poor sucker.
A 70-300 f/4-5.6 would be pretty much useless for shooting indoor basketball in the venues I shoot in. Even in the bright RBC Center, I think the exposure at f/5.6 would be ISO 3200 and 1/500th of a second. I don't like to get much below 1/400th of a second when shooting basketball. 1/30/2009 10:07:42 PM |

I just got my Charger and Sanyo Eneloop AA's this week and holy fucking shit, these are awesome! They are better than regular AA's and recycle my flash really fast. I shot a ton of night club stuff tonight and shot probably 500 pics with the flash and it was still charging the flash relatively fast. And thats right out of the package too.
Consider me impressed with the Eneloops. JBaz endorses these. 2/1/2009 3:15:57 AM |

vertical lines are a very powerful design tool, specially when you have alternating lines that gives depth. Unfortunately, there's nothing at the horizon line to capture the viewer's attention when they get to the point so it's really not a very interesting shot, it's just lost in space. Having a Dog or a person, just a dark contrast silhouette, would have made that shot 1000% better. 2/2/2009 10:05:07 PM |
