You guys won't mind if I actually talk about the iPhone a bit will ya?
I just tried out the Tomtom app for a ride around the block or two. It's definitely got the best UI of any of the TBT apps I've tried. It really feels like a first party App with the way that addresses are entered and how it integrates with the rest of the phone. Featurewise, I'm not really sure what the $99 is for. If it wasn't for the HORRENDOUS UI, I could easily recommend CoPilot Live as the best software and it costs ~1/3 of what the Tomtom app does.
I guess Tomtom's just banking on the name recognition and people that care more about UI than features. Well I guess I just described 2/3rds of all Apple users, so maybe they're on to something. 8/17/2009 5:33:33 PM |

do you:
1) have money to burn? 2) have someone paying for your iPhone app testing? 3) truely see value in a $100 TBT iPhone app?
not trolling, just curious. 8/17/2009 9:30:35 PM |

^^Motherfucker I stole this shit.
^It's not on Appulous just yet, but it probably will be soon. A copy of it got uploaded to the newsgroups earlier today. I'd imagine it's all over rapidshare/torrent sites by now.
This is one app in particular that I don't mind blatantly stealing, as there's no way in hell I'd ever pay for it at it's current price point. If they ever get around to fixing the UI on that CoPilot Live app, I think I'll end up getting a legal copy of it. I don't mind supporting software that I use, but I just don't drive enough (especially to places I don't know directions to) to justify spending much more than $20. And even that's just for convenience. 8/17/2009 10:00:06 PM |

so maybe i'm missing something, but why do you need or want a $100 app for navigation if you already have google maps and can get the at&t navigation for considerably cheaper (yeah it's a monthly subscription tho)?
and for that much money, as someone else already mentioned, i'd just buy an actual device. that much money for just software for a phone is too much imo.

a. i didn't pay for it b. no fucking shit. that's why it isn't going to do nearly as good as it would at say $49 c. it doesn't need an internet connection to work..google maps does and i'm pretty sure at&t's service does as well. not a huge deal always..but def a possible issue in a lot of places 8/18/2009 1:28:50 PM |

okay well maybe i'm the only person who looks up shit before they head out to somewhere they've never been. if i happen to be looking for something in bfe, i make sure i know where basic things are before i get there. i like to be prepared.
oh and since my question wasn't directed solely at you and you didn't pay for it, your answer to that particular part is irrelevant.

I don't see the sense in arguing that it's not convenient to have a GPS unit with you. You can look at "where you're going" all you want before you leave, but one highway closed with construction is enough to derail your master plans, Einstein. 8/18/2009 2:01:16 PM |

You are missing something. Like the fact that nobody in this thread has yet to suggest that a TBT app anywhere close to $100 value to them.
Well, I've already said it at least twice, but I guess I'll say it again. The only appeal of a TBT app I can see is the convenience of having a "real" GPS being with you at all times. Packed into the same device you carry with you everywhere you go. Yes, most people that know they are going on a trip will look up the directions beforehand, but for me, the main appeal of a GPS isn't overall trip planning necessarily, but being able to look up POIs around you, or for unexpected detours. Or for being able to jump into the car without spending 10 minutes on the computer beforehand. Yes you can get the same general service for free using google maps, but the navigation experience on a true TBT app is much better. Not $100 better, but it is worth something.
BTW, anybody that says the AT&T Navigator software is "considerably cheaper" is just being stupid. Use it for a year and then tell me how much money you've saved. I don't see how anybody considers that an option, unless they just like throwing money away.8/18/2009 2:02:02 PM |
se7entythree YOSHIYOSHI 17377 Posts user info edit post |
google maps. if you're on a highway that's under construction, most likely you have service - as in, little backwoods highways are rarely being repaired. they put up detours too. i'm just not paying $100 for something there's like <1% chance i'll ever need.

I needed it when heading out to "deep run", nc, where we had a family reunion. THat place is in the middle of nowhere, and I couldnt even get an edge signal, much less maps data, on my iphone.
If you just drive around raleigh, then no, you dont really need the application. 8/18/2009 2:04:26 PM |

Having a GPS unit is obviously beneficial, many people buy stand alone units. Also, the fact that a (decent) GPS app would negate most of the need to buy a standalone unit is also quite appealing.
I cannot take you seriously when your argument against GPS on the iPhone is that it's got google maps, and you get service in most places. If you cannot afford one, that's a separate issue. 8/18/2009 2:17:31 PM |

i for one would not want to use my iphone as my primary GPS in the car
if i'm on a trip, i dont want my phone tied up doing nav work when i or my passengers might need it for any the following:
1) an actual phone 2) ipod/podcast player 3) slacker/pandora streaming 4) game playing
ill use google every ow and then for 5 minute jobs, but i wouldnt want to mount my phone on my windshield (the only place i'd want a TBT GPS mounted) when I might need it for that other stuff.
not saying i wouldnt pay $10 for a TBT app...just for the fun of it/backup, but I like having my $100, purpose built Garmin guide me places ] 8/18/2009 2:24:12 PM |

I think the upgrade pricing for 3GS for current 3G owners is available after 18 months of the contract are up 8/20/2009 7:24:06 PM |

or you can add a line, get the phone, and cancel the line. comes out to ~400 instead of 600...basically allows you to get the upgrade pricing early (available 18 months after your last purchase), AND preserve your 2 year out of contract purchase for the next one. 8/21/2009 12:42:39 AM |

I figure I've been using AIM for free on a computer for something like 15 years. $3 isn't going to kill me at this point.8/25/2009 10:12:22 AM |

edit: Also, I bought the $9.99 bejive AIM/etc client. It works very well, I think I just use it for AIM, google, and facebook chat. At the time I got it not many quality clients looked like they supported push...
