I think I'm about to buy one. I don't really get into video games, but I'm going to buy a DVD/Blu-Ray player, and it isn't much more expensive to just buy the PS3.

There pretty much are no deals to be had on one, as best as I can tell. It's pretty much $299, take it or leave it...and used ones seem to be so damned expensive that you'd be crazy not to just buy a new one.

Massive news today about the security of the ps3 (or complete lack thereof). Apparently Sony uses a random number generator to allow signed code to run on the console. Except for the same random number is used every single time (and now people know what it is).

Long story short: the homebrew scene for the ps3 is about to get a shitton more interesting.

Anybody else been following the homebrew/hacks that have been coming out the last couple of days? I've been playing Advance Wars 2 on a GBA emulator for the last 3 hours. I'm pretty sure that unless you count time spent watching cutscenes in Metal Gear Solid (I don't), that's the most time I've spent playing PS3 in the 3+ years I've owned it.

^^There's really not much to it. All you do is make sure you're on the newest firmware (3.55), then download the jailbreak file from geohot.com and flash your ps3 with it. The only thing it does is add a menu item that allows you to install signed homebrew packages just like they were demos/games from the psn. Then download whatever packages you can find (They have a pretty good list on ps3-hacks.com) and put them on a flash drive and install them using the installer. Right now all they have is a bunch of emulators and a couple of file manager type programs. I think you can probably use one of the ftp programs to copy roms to your PS3 HDD, but I just played them straight off the flash drive and it worked just fine.

^ So the metldr key issue runs deeper than most people realize. Being able to run homebrew stuff on your PS3 is cool and all, but that shit can go two ways. And with people being able to get on PSN with a modified version of a game using the valid key, that opens up a ton of security risks that can fuck people up.

It happened to a buddy of mine on MW2. He entered a game lobby and then when the match started a terminal popped up on his screen and executed a whole bunch of console commands. Next thing he knows, he's running around with a clan tag that he cant change, all his classes have been reset, and a "You've been fucking owned" message was scrolling at the bottom of his screen. Now granted, none of this affects his profile data stored on PSN's servers (rank, unlocks, etc) but shit like that seriously fucks up the experience and it seriously blows if sony cant do anything about it, as hinted by this:

^That article is spectacularly retarded and contradicts itself several times. Sony can, and most certainly will be able to detect people who have modified their consoles and will be able to block them from playing online. It's even been said they have the ability to permanently disable the console for offline use as well, although I don't see them ever going to that extreme.

Regardless, Sony suing the hackers that found the security hole makes about as much sense as someone suing Smith and Wesson because somebody used a gun to kill somebody. Nothing they have done is inherently illegal, and none of the hackers (publicly) condone piracy. It's not their fault that people will use this for illegal activities. Sony is going after the wrong group of people for all the wrong reasons.

lbp2 is a little annoying at first. you have to play through 7 levels of tutorial, even though it knows that you played lbp1, it still makes you learn how to jump & hang. it also teaches you how to grapple. i stopped at 4 bc i had to eat dinner. it does look promising though.

i wouldn't let myself start LBP2 until i beat 3d Dot Game Heroes, so I scrambled to get through the last boss last night.

only had time for the first 2 tutorial levels of LBP2 but they're enjoyable enough. looking forward to getting into the real meat of the game.

Are PSN/Game update downloads slow as shit for everybody, or am I being fucked with? I just downloaded a 19MB file that took 5-6 minutes. I'm updating GT5 now and it says it's gonna take 2.5 hours. I don't have the fastest internet in the world, but even on my 3Mbps DSL a 600 MB file shouldn't take more than half an hour, tops.

^^^The 19MB was the update for NBA Jam, and the 600 one is for GT5. But like I said, I've never had it even come close to maxing out my pathetic little 3MB pipe. I've even taken my PS3 to other people's houses and it's been really slow. I just assumed that it was normal. normal and pathetic, but normal.

^I think I saw an auto-install option in one of the menus. It wasn't turned on by default though.

Downloaded a 20 meg God of War 3 update in under a minute a few nights ago.

I haven't been able to find any info on the content of the update to 3.56 besides that it contains a "security fix" and other vague terms

Yeah, it changed the keys and none of the hacks work anymore. Should be a day or so before the hackers are able to extract the new keys and start signing stuff on 3.5.6.

The game of cat and mouse begins. Unfortunately for Sony, there's nothing they can ever do to get the upper hand again. The security flaw is built into the hardware. All Sony can do now is make it annoying for people to do their thing.
