This is now my oatmeal cup. There are many others like it, but this one is mine. My oatmeal cup is my best friend. It is my life. I must master it as I must master my life. Without me, my oatmeal cup is useless. Without my oatmeal cup, I am useless. I must fill my oatmeal cup true. I must eat faster than my enemy, who is trying to kill me. I must eat my oatmeal before he shoots me. I will. Before God I swear this creed: my oatmeal cup and myself are defenders of my country, we are the masters of our enemy, we are the saviors of my life. So be it, until there is no enemy, but peace. Amen. 3/8/2010 8:51:15 AM |

I can't wait until it's warm enough to bike to work. It seems like it will be just about a week or so.
I just checked the weather, it looks like I can go this week!

Whether e.g. can be used at the end of a phrase. I have no reason to say it can't given its meaning, but it gave me pause because I've never seen it that way and all proper usage notes involve it at the start of a list or phrase. 3/8/2010 10:42:51 AM |

Brats, pizza, wings, chicken sandwich... it's a decent cheap meal... Plus, it's gorgeous to sit outside there todya, I'm "in between jobs" and I like $2.75 beers and I know I can't go tonight so I can get my three beers on the cheap working towards that plate!3/8/2010 10:43:10 AM |

Based on the definition of e.g., it makes better sense to use it before the examples given.
I don't know that it's incorrect to use it at the end of a sentence, but it doesn't make sense to do so. 3/8/2010 10:46:04 AM |
Skwinkle burritotomyface 19447 Posts user info edit post |
Sure it does. Like the way I'd use it here, for example.

Not sure why I took so much offense to that girl for confusing goo goo dolls and gin blossoms
I mean, I berated her viciously, when a simple polite reminder would have sufficed
I feel kinda bad about it now, but that is still an egregious mistake on her part 3/8/2010 10:48:16 AM |

That sentence structure drives me nuts. If you're writing, it makes more sense to preface with "For example..."
Just MHO
And I'm a pretty vicious proofreader.

yeah, most people don't actually get food there, but everyone can find something
I haven't found anything I don't like (well, not the biggest fan of the hippy hollow, but that just isn't my thing)
are you gonna want to sit outside? I'm debating bringing the monster... even if I don't though, it is still a nice day out (might be a tad crowded)
when are you gonna want to go?3/8/2010 10:51:26 AM |
