this could be explained by the girl having "moved on" by fixing whatever issue she needed to fix in order to move on. since this person wasn't one of the main characters and we didn't know anything about her, we don't know that isn't what happened to her.

i maintain my purgatory theory.

Somehow this island is really the ultimate "Witness Protection Program" ... good people who have inadvertently gotten on the wrong side of a very bad organization ... the organization is under major investigation and infiltration by the US Government (a la SD6?) ... and along the way the only way the Government has found to get these innocent bystanders out of the way of this terrible organization is to somehow to put them on this island ... for their own good ..."

*** This is what happened last week as best as I can remember...anyone else who has seen this episode should feel free to correct anything I got wrong and to add anything I left out. ***

Last week's episode focussed on Charlie and had a moth/butterfly theme. Charlie began a painful journey of withdrawal from drugs, surprisingly aided by Locke, whose true motive for helping Charlie remained a mystery. Locke showed Charlie a moth caccoon and explained to him that the moth inside the caccoon would have to use all its strength to emerge from its caccoon, and that this feat would be necessary for the moth to survive outside the caccoon. Locke explained how he could have easily cut the caccoon open and freed the moth, but then the moth wouldn't have built up strength and therefore wouldn't survive long outside the caccoon.

Meanwhile, Sayid, Kate, and Boone set out on a mission to triangulate the source of the French distress call transmission by setting up 3 antennas and using the transceiver, which had a limited power supply. They planned to signal to each other that each antenna was in position and ready using fireworks found in baggage from the plane.

Meanwhile, Jack became buried alive in a cave collapse. Trying to free him, other survivors began moving rocks to make an access tunnel to the space where Jack is trapped.

Word of the cave collpase reached the other survivors on the beach, one of which was Boone. He wanted to go tell Kate that Jack was trapped inside the collpased cave, so he left Shannon in charge of setting off the bottle rocket when she saw the other 2 rockets set off. However, once Boone caught up to Kate, who was on her way to set up one of the antennas, he played games with her and didn't tell her about Jack.

The group finished making a tunnel to rescue Jack. The only nearby person who was small enough to fit through the tunnel was Sun, so Hurley told her to go, but Jin didn't want her to go. Charlie, who had struggled to find ways to help prior to the collapse but had been brushed aside by others as if incapable of helping, volunteered to go down the tunnel since he was also small enough. He grabbed a flashlight and made his way into the space where Jack was trapped, but just as he got to Jack, the tunnel caved in behind him, leaving Jack and Charlie both trapped inside the cave. Just when Charlie had almost lost all hope of getting Jack or himself out of the collapsed cave, he spotted a moth flying around inside the cave. Watching the moth, he spotted a tiny bit of light and discovered that it led to a way out of the cave. He and Jack made it out of the cave.

Boone finally told Kate about Jack and she rushed down to the cave, getting there just before Jack and Charlie made it out of the cave. Shannon, Sayid, and Boone set off the fireworks, signalling that the antennas were in position and ready, so Sayid turned on the transceiver, but before the transceiver could link to the French transmission, someone whacked Sayid over the back of the head. We don't know who knocked out Sayid.

Miscellaneous notes...

Charlie had trouble dealing with the withdrawal, and after flashing back to previous moments in his life, which reminded him of how his brother had turned on him in the band, he wanted his drugs back from Locke. By the time he got around to asking Locke for the drugs back, he had decided he needed to be strong and not use the drugs. Locke, thinking Charlie was still weak, hesitated to give Charlie the drugs back but told him if Charlie asked for them a 3rd time, he would give them to him. Charlie asked for them a 3rd time and Lock reluctantly gave them to him, but then Charlie immediately threw into the campfire, destroying them. Ultimately, Locke's speach to Charlie about the moth emerging from its caccoon was a metaphor for Charlie's struggle with the drug withdrawal and the cave incident.

In Charlie's flashbacks, we learn that his brother was who got him started on the drugs and that his brother screwed him over in their band. Charlie was the lead singer, but his brother started to "take over" the band, suddenly jumping in as lead singer during a concert and making decisions about the band without consulting Charlie. It was apparent to Charlie that his brother was about the fame and the money, not about the music. In a moment of frustration and anger, Charlie uses his brother's drugs, which is how his drug addiction began. Charlie was on the plane on his way to LA for a band gig/promotion, but his brother didn't come along.

Michael corrected Hurley and told him Jin and Sun are Korean and not Chinese, and Michael and Sun exchanged a glance.

Jin still had half of the handcuffs attached to his wrist.

Jin yelled at Sun for wearing a cut off shirt that exposed her arms and abdomen, but she yelled back at him, telling him it was too hot to wear anything else.
