"Hard times reach Hillsborough Street
LocoPops, Global Village among others express decline in sales

The economic issues plaguing the nation are affecting Hillsborough Street businesses as well, and area businesses have changed policies and prices to keep up with the changing economic climate.

Lucy Phillips, a sophomore in visual arts application, has been working at LocoPops, the popular frozen snack supplier, for about a month now and has already seen a change in policy due to economic stress. Now, a popsicle that would have been two dollars including tax is two dollars and change.

“Since I started working here, the old policy has changed where they used to include tax in the old prices, everyone was coming in with not enough money because they were not used to the new prices,” said Phillips. “Now we add the tax on with the popsicles, which is a big change.”

Likewise, Global Village Organic Coffee has adapted in response to changes in the economic climate, including changes in its employees' paychecks.

“[The manager] has had to cut back on hours,” said Nick Morse, a senior in business administration and a Village employee. “He has changed the store hours - we close earlier now.”

“It has become less busy this semester as compared to last semester, but nothing too noticeable," Morse said. "We still have about the same amount of customers, they are just ordering cheaper drinks, so instead of like a latte they will order coffee."

Although some businesses have noticed changes sooner than others, all businesses seemed to have been affected around Christmas by a slump in sales.

“This is my fifth Christmas and it's one of the biggest times of the year because scooters are gifts and it was just down," said Rick Sathoff, owner and manager of Electric Scooter City. "You could tell – interest was down, sales were down.”

Morse echoed Sathoff's sentiments.

“The transition occurred over break," Morse said. "Going into the break we didn’t see to much of a difference, but then coming back … our busy hours -- morning and lunchtime -- just don’t seem as busy anymore.”

Jerry Bates, owner of College Music and Pawn, first experienced a decrease in sales about six to nine months ago but has managed to stay in the black by various means.

“My sales are down, but buying gold, and making loans and interest payments are what’s keeping me afloat,” stated Bates. “I have to turn people away … I don’t take VCR's anymore, I don’t take tools … I am not cutthroat doing it but … I am a music and jewelry store … the only reason I buy the jewelry is because my wife wanted me too.”

For Bates, as a pawnshop owner, it is easy to see the full breadth of the economic stress beyond its effect on him and other local businesses.

“My loans are up probably 30 percent but I am finding out people aren’t coming back to pick those up, they just can’t afford it,” he said. “I hope it doesn’t get worse because … I see the people come in [saying] ‘I got laid off, I got laid off,’ and I see a lot of wedding bands too.”

On the bright side, not all businesses seem to have been affected, as Rose Schwetz of Sadlack’s Heroes reports relatively normal business aside from the typical sloth seen in January and February.

“My sales have been good," Schwetz said. "People still want to eat and my sandwich prices are at a good level, the food is good, and if people drink it’s because they have extra money.”

“Everybody is running that recession stuff but you can always eat here from $4.95…all the way up to $8.95, so you have variety depending upon the size you want, so I don’t get stuck in that recession stuff,” said Schwetz. “I have a real steady repeat cliental [that] keeps me pretty much even all the time.”

With respect to other businesses on Hillsborough Street, Schwetz hopes the upcoming Renaissance March 14 will give them a boost.

“It’s supposed to be 5,000 to 10,000 people on the street,” Schwetz said. “They are going to block the street off and [have] bands, concerts, [and] competition … sidewalk sales, and stuff outside and music all day and all night.”

“We’ve got to promote it,” she said. “Banners are supposed to go up this week on every pole.”

Aside from a lucky few, the majority of businesses seem to be hurting right now and all seem to have the same outlook for the future. As Sathoff said, “I expect it [business] to be slow all year, but we’ll see.”

Correspondent Daniel Farrell contributed to this story."

The owners of those buildings really need to get with this whole "economy is in the shitter" thing and lower their rents. That strip has always had high rents, it's ridiculous.

^ They should also tear down the Electric Company Mall while they're at it. So much wasted space in that building.

Tear it down, then build mixed use buildings. Businesses at street level and apartments above.

Raleigh to spend $9M on Hillsborough Street traffic circles
Raleigh, N.C. — The City Council on Tuesday approved spending $9 million to install roundabouts on Hillsborough Street between Oberlin Road and Gardner Street.

North Carolina State University also contributed money to the project. The N.C. State campus runs along Hillsborough Street for the entire stretch.

Local voters approved the roundabouts four years ago as part of a $60 million bond referendum for road improvements. The City Council has debated the details of the project ever since.

The traffic circles are seen as a way to make Hillsborough Street more pedestrian-friendly and to revitalize the area for businesses.

Councilman Philip Isley opposed the effort Tuesday, saying there are better uses for the money in the current economic environment.

"In my estimation, this is a low-hanging fruit for us to grab and determine a way to forestall any water increase or plug holes in our budget," Isley said. "I want to make a substitute motion to furlough this project for 18 months."

The motion was defeated.

From a wolfline email I got 5/1

Quote :
"Hillsborough Street Roundabout Project

The city project, which extends along Hillsborough Street from Gardner Street to Oberlin Road, will convert Hillsborough Street to a two-lane, median-divided facility with street parking, new, brick sidewalks and several pedestrian signals. The project also includes replacing water and sewer utilities, moving overhead utilities underground, adding infrastructure for future charging stations for electric plug-in vehicles, and installing LED street and pedestrian lighting.

Hillsborough Square Lot closes May 11

* Hillsborough Square Parking Lot (behind Red Hot & Blue - off Oberlin Road) CLOSES PERMANENTLY May 11. (See parking options above). A "C" permit may be exchanged for a "DC" - Coliseum Deck permit.

* Initial work will begin May 11. Hillsborough Street (eastbound reduced to one traffic lane) between Gardner and the Bell Tower. Hillsborough Street will remain open throughout the project. In the initial phase, westbound lanes of Hillsborough Street are not affected. The project is estimated for September, 2010 completion.

For more information visit:
http://www.hillsboroughstreet.org/
http://www.raleigh-nc.org (search Hillsborough Roundabout)

This is a City of Raleigh project; NC State's construction liaison is Cameron Smith, cameron_smith@ncsu.edu
Transportation-related questions? Please contact Ryan Givens, ryan_givens@ncsu.edu

Although Hillsborough Street will remain open, you may want to explore alternate routes. Wolfline buses will continue to service Hillsborough Street, but at times, may encounter detours/delays during utility work, etc.

Thanks for your cooperation and patience!"

GAH. I'm all for this revitalization--really, I am--but I forgot we're losing the Hillsborough Square lot to the roundabout/Oberlin reroute. There go another 50+ C permit spaces, when it's already damn hard to find a space in the Reynolds lot unless you get there really early since they killed a lot of C spaces behind the gym and student health. Guess it's time to go trade in for a DC.

On the bright side, the fact that they're finally, finally starting this is some very good news.

I love the roundabout idea, but the single lane and parallel parking idea totally sucks. I like having a lane to go around people who don't know how to park!

They have completely cut off Oberlin access to Players Retreat and Darryl's (RH&B) from Cameron village and Campus. The only way to directly access those places are coming from downtown on HB st.

No they haven't

Just go around the traffic circle. In terms of distance, it'll be longer coming from CV, but about the same from campus.

You can still access Players Retreat, RHB, etc from Cameron Village. You have two options coming from CV.

1. The simplest is to just go around the Oberlin circle and park.
2. Go around the Oberlin circle, around the Pullen circle, and then park in the lot behind PR/RHB.

If you're coming from the west, you can also just go around the Pullen circle, u-turn in front of RHB, down Oberlin, and park. There's a ton of options. You could also park at Cameron Village and get your lazy ass walking south and not worry about parking.

Look I even annotated a picture for you:

After completion, we'll need a person with a signboard sitting on one of the entrance islands that reads, "_ _ days since last accident."

I would expect that we'd only need 1 digit, but you never know, there could be a dry spell after people learn how to use it.

that u-turn you did is illegal. and of course you can get to nearby parking lots, but you can't roll up to the front of it from the street in your car without going outside of that diagram.

hillsborough should be pretty nice after it's all said and done

of course this won't deter the bums

also, keep in mind that most of the green/landscaped areas you see on the plans will probably turn from grass into large deposits of mulch and dirt, just like almost everywhere else on this fucking campus

Yeah, really.

Thanks for the info. Now that HBST is down to one lane I just have to remember to never, ever take it again. One lane with multiple cross walks and parallel parkers. Just screams log jam.

that's pretty much the point. Hillsborough has turned into a thoroughfare to downtown, which it was not "intended" to be, or at least, not was city planners want it to be. They want to slow down and lessen thru-traffic on Hillsborough, and route downtown traffic over to Wade. Theoretically, the only cars who are "supposed" to be using Hillsborough are ones who are trying to get somewhere on Hillsborough.

The 2-lane roundabout might be a little confusing at first, and a handful of morons will screw it up, but seriously, it's not that hard. Hopefully they'll put up some decent signs in addition to useful paint on the roadway.

Quote :

I'm pretty sure that the left turn from eastbound Hillsborough to northbound Oberlin is illegal. That's kind of the point of the whole restructuring down there. The left turn onto Oberlin was the biggest bottleneck on Hillsb St, so they removed it. The left turn arrow in the center lane there is for turning into the businesses on that side of the street and for turning onto Woodburn.

But I have no idea why anyone would be so adamant about wanting to park on the street in front of Players Retreat. There's a big damn parking lot on the backside, and 6 spots on the front. And if you're in Cameron Village and want to park on the street there, just take Woodburn to Hillsb, then take Oberlin north. Then realize all 6 spots are already full, and go to the parking lot behind the building.
