Quote :
"No one in authority at N.C. State is saying today's game against East Carolina will be Chuck Amato's last as Wolfpack coach, but several signs point that way.
The most obvious is NCSU athletics director Lee Fowler's early week statement that Amato's status will be reviewed after this final regular-season game.

That's a 180-degree shift from what Fowler was saying a few weeks back, when he actively was voicing support for the seventh-year coach. Fowler, then, was dismissing media reports that Amato was on any sort of a hot seat.

But that's only a part of the current dynamic.

The fact that Fowler so quickly retreated from his earlier stand is an indication that either everything rides on the outcome against ECU or that the decision to release Amato already has been made.

Otherwise, what possibly could be the point of waiting until after the game to announce that Amato would be back in 2007? If the coach still has the school's support, why not say so before the game? Such a statement would have cleared the air, resolved the rampant speculation in the fan base and loosened the pressure on the coaches and the players in their game preparations.

Although there are several fringe issues -- staff management, the coach's personality, player development -- the basic decision on Amato shouldn't be complicated.

The school either still is convinced that he's a quality coach or that it's time to find someone else. That's the only real question.

Oh sure, Amato could be given one more season to make progress. But if that's the verdict, the school has to be prepared to deal with the likelihood that the '07 team will finish 6-6 or 7-5 overall and 4-4 or 3-5 in the ACC, which are Amato's norms. What then? Fire a coach coming off a decent season? Or give him the contract extension he would need to assure potential recruits that he'd be around for a few more seasons?

The one part of the situation that would make absolutely no sense would be to tie Amato's fate to beating the Pirates, a 6-5 team coming off a crushing one-point Conference USA loss at Rice.

Although the Pack and Pirates remain rivals in the most casual sense, they haven't played but one time since 1999. That was a 52-14 State rout in 2004 over an ECU team that was probably the worst in Division I-A.

The intensity of the series is a faint shadow of its formidable nature during the 1970s, '80s and '90s. Most of the current players aren't old enough to remember when a Pack-Pirates game was a center-stage event.

A State win in Carter-Finley Stadium would equate to little more than the difference between finishing 4-8 and 3-9. Regardless of the outcome or even the margin of victory, the tone and texture of Amato's season wouldn't change.

The games Amato really needed to win are long gone -- last week at UNC, Nov. 4 against Georgia Tech, Oct. 28 at Virginia and the two early season losses to Akron and Southern Miss. Had his team won those, the table stakes tonight would be all about bowl placement rather than the difference between four wins and three wins.

If Amato goes, this final game of 2006 will be virtually irrelevant in the big picture. Instead, it would have everything to do with his 25-31 ACC record, losing streak to UNC and an offense that fell apart without Philip Rivers.

do you really think they would announce it right after the game?
"and thats the game with the Final score of ECU: 86 NCST: 12 and now to a press conf with Lee Fowler..."

I would think if they are going to fire him they would wait until Sunday at least, but thats my opinon

"t says here Chuck Amato brought much needed excitement to State football -- excitement that hadn't been there since maybe the days of Lou Holtz. (Dick Sheridan was a good solid football coach who won 52 games in seven years, but the buzz wasn't there with the low-key Sheridan like the buzz Chuck Amato brought.)

He came in talking big and thinking large, and there was nothing wrong with that, and it paid off. He got people excited about State football, and that's exactly what was needed. Facilities were built and people were talking State football. ESPN game day came, State football was a program on the rise. Players were being selected in the first round of the NFL draft. Wolfpack football was getting recognized, and Chuck Amato was at the forefront. Should that be forgotten?

State fans don't want to hear this, but they know the Wolfpack has never been a consistent power in football. There have been good seasons, to be sure, but really, no great seasons. Duke, of all schools, has as many ACC titles as State in football (both have more than Carolina). State hasn't won an ACC title since 1979. That's a long time. It's never been easy at State.

Now Amato, in his seventh season, has a struggling team. It's been close, but close doesn't count in the game of football. State has not been a winning football team this season, but it's been competitive -- so many close losses where a play here or there has made the difference. Inches in some cases. And State came up short every time. Yes, they can blame themselves for mistakes and penalties and such, but they were there to make it interesting.

Many key players return from this team that never quit on the coach. If a team quits on a coach, you know it. This State team has kept playing hard. They keep battling, and next season, these close losses are maybe wins. There is talent there now and talent coming in. Chuck Amato brought them here.

It's easy to turn on someone when things aren't going well. It's the unfortunate nature of life. Amato has taken State to five bowls in his seven years as coach. He got State fans caring again and oh, do they do care. So much. Change can be good, but it's not a guarantee of anything. You never know.

Does Chuck Amato deserve to see if he can get it started again? Does State start over with the unknown, or do they stick with someone who put the pride back in Wolfpack football and who will always love the red and white? Should he have the opportunity to take the young talent that will be back and that is coming in and see what he can do? Or has the coach taken this program as far as he can? And this question, how far exactly can this program go?

Nothing with Chuck Amato is ever simple."

We have a shot at a great coach at this point. Amato has embarassed us numerous times. When you hear about us in the national media now, what do you hear about? Something stupid Chuck said, usually.

College fb is a business, whether you like it or not. Like any corporation, you have investors, and they want a return. If your company showed declining profits for 4 consecutive years, coupled with bad PR and upset investors, would you not think a change of direction at the top was in order? With all the talk about cutting the management and the guaranteed possibility of briging in new, successful management, would you not expect there to be a change of direction?

The investors will decide this, and they are in favor of a new coach. Rightfully so.

"David Glenn spoke with a former Board of Trustees member who didn’t paint a very pretty picture for the football coach.

I’ve been around this university for a long, long time. I know the decision-makers, I know the trustees, and I know many other (N.C. State) people, and it is almost impossible to find anyone of influence who is standing in support of Chuck Amato right now. To my knowledge, among those folks, there is absolutely zero support for keeping him. At this point, only two people can save Chuck Amato — the chancellor (James Oblinger) and the athletic director (Lee Fowler). I can’t speak for them, but I will be very, very surprised if (Amato) is still our coach next week.

There’s the rub. Coaches shouldn’t be fired for losing one game, and that’s likely the case for Amato this evening against East Carolina. Win or lose, the choice to fire or retain Amato has been made already. We won’t find out what the ultimate choice is until after the game, unless some media finally land some rock-solid sources to break the news before game time.

Livebloggn’ tonight from Carter-Finley Stadium, so stay turned. "

FWIW….W(no longer)ITH?
Published by AdamGold November 25th, 2006 in ACC Football

For the last several days we’ve been hearing way too many rumors for the following not to be true. But, reports from press row indicated that NC State’s assistant coaches were informed prior to tonight’s game (Friday?) that Chuck Amato would not be retained. The outcome of tonight’s game — ultimately the Pack’s 7th straight loss to end the season — had no bearing on the decision.

Let’s face it, tonight was a microcosm of State’s problems this year — and in year’s past. Two critical, and totally unnecessary, personal foul penalties kept alive ECU’s first touchdown drive. They missed too many tackles, especially on the Pirates’ back-breaking touchdown with :05 left in the half, and showed ZERO offensive consistency.

I don’t know when any official announcement is likely to come forth (though I’ve heard Sunday afternoon), but the time has come for someone to take State football to the next plateau. Chuck’s laid a very strong foundation, now it’s time for someone to come in and turn the Wolfpack into a winning program.

UPDATE: Hey folks, Joe here. Amato wouldn’t address his job status during post game, only to say that the decision was out of his hands. In reponse to the last question of the night regarding fans wanting him terminated, Amato finally opened up and discussed what he felt he brought to the table. Click for the full audio.

Chuck Amato post game press conference."

"SFN hears about fiscal responsibility from the NC State Athletics Administration all of the time. Most recently we have heard from numerous people connected to the University that Chuck Amato (AND Marc Trestman’s) jobs are 100% safe because Lee Fowler and NC State’s Administration ‘cannot’/will not pay for buyouts related to their contracts. We want to make sure that emphasize that there is a big difference between “cannot” and “will not”. Unfortunately for State fans, the Department likes to present things that they “will not” do as things that “cannot” be done."

^^^ Before Chuck got here, we didn't always sell out the stadium, and that was before either endzone had been filled in.

You mean before Philip Rivers got here?

By the way, the largest crowd to see an NC State game was 59,500ish BEFORE the stadium renovations were done.

Confirmed: Chuck will not be back.
Source: A member of the Board of Trustees

Assistant coaches were notified late this week that Chuck resigned at the recommendation of the administration/Board of Trustees. As noted in other posts/articles, as per his contract he will receive the rest of his annual salary and misc. other guaranteed compensation—exact figures are not yet known.

Official announcement/press conference should be held in the next 48 hours.

No word on how far along, if at all, the search for a new coach has progressed.
