i work at a vet clinic, we have about 30 employees are growing & have had over 16k clients (each one of which could have several pets) and i used to work up front in reception, but got promoted to administrative assistant on track to being assistant manager. that said, when I was upfront most of the time and something I really hated was people who would bring their dogs in and say something like "I think he's going to pee soon" and then about a minute later, they'd say "oh he just peed" and act surprised, the whole while standing beside a door with plenty of access to the outside.

now i spend my time working out of the doctor's office area as its the largest office (one of 4 in the clinic) and right beside the managers office doing stuff like hiring&training/marketing/collections/employee-schedules/agenda&minutes for all clinic meetings/other finances.

"Having to dumb myself down to communicate on a level with the stereotypical NC people"

All that is to say, I used to be in a position that makes me completely understand this sentence. I can't tell you the number of people who don't have pet insurance, but who assume that vets will be like their normal doctors so they can walk out without paying, or only bring $10 co-pay (co-pay to what, if u don't have insurance it costs more than $10 to have an x-ray done?!?), or tell me I forgot my wallet b/c I didn't think I'd have to pay. All these people are driving without their licenses on them? really?

Clients on their phones drove me crazy too. when i would try to check them in, they'd ignore me or give me a bad look for trying to talk to them while they were on the phone, wouldn't tell me who they were, and then would be mad 20 minutes later when they got off the phone and they weren't checked in yet for an appointment that started 20 minutes ago.

disclaimer: most of the clients were good people who actually cared about living things other than themselves, so the work was as disheartening as I've made it sound... i was just sharing the annoyances.

I hate when my supervisor waits until 2:00 to go on lunch break, or doesn't go at all, eating at her desk instead, which makes it harder/impossible for me to take an extended break (she can't know when I leave if I wait until she's left).

I also hate getting summoned to a mysterious team meeting where we have no idea what's to be discussed - the e-mail from my boss says something like "I just have a few items to discuss"... are we in trouble? Is someone getting fired? Are we doing an awesome job and getting a pot of gold? Who the fuck knows?

Morning meetings that start 2 minutes early make people look bad who come in right on time, only to walk in on a meeting already in progress.

Women who stand around right outside my cube and yakkety-yak about stupid shit for 5 minutes get on my nerves.

oh wow

when people email me something that needs to get done without giving any kind of due date..then call an hour later expecting it to be done. esp annoying when i've left the plant to go meet somebody so there's no way i can finish it by the time they now tell me they need it

be early, not 'on time'

^^considering that I get all my work done in about 4 out of my 8 hours I'm supposed to be here, why shouldn't I take extended breaks? This is why I advocate the 3-day weekend.

you're sure to go far in life

i'm suppose to be here at 730, get here at 7... suppose to leave at 515, leave at 530 minimum. doing the minimum isn't always a good thing. i was the biggest slacker and shortcut taker in school that i could be but the real world doesn't work like that

^But I don't do the bare minimum, I do really great work and everyone loves what I do, it just doesn't take all day. I have frequent periods of downtime where I do stuff like goof off on TWW. It's just dumb that I have to sit here for 8 hours when I have only 4 hours of work to do.

People who spend the extra money to buy 24" widescreen displays, and then use a standard-aspect resolution so everything looks squashed. Do you actually like distorted images or something?

^ my boss does that. it drives me nuts

his is the opposite though. his laptop is widescreen and he uses a normal LCD. so when he hooks his laptop up to his docking station, the display is squished

i don't think he realizes it should be different

Hey, you're in charge of this-that-and-the-other!

Ok, I'll do it just fine, I know how and have the time!

But remember you have to get shit from this person and that person.

Ok, this person has given me the shit I need, but that person hasn't yet.

Let me know when that person has gotten you your shit!

[Two days pass, lots of phone calls, "that" person hasn't gotten me the shit.]

WHY HAVEN'T YOU GOTTEN YOUR SHIT TURNED IN, YOU SHOULD HAVE DONE IT BY NOW, YOU ARE MESSING UP BY NOT DOING A, B, C, D, E, F,....

But that person hasn't given me her shit.

Oh, I didn't realize that. Carry on.

Meanwhile...

Hey, [that person] I need your shit.

Cool, I'll get it to you on the day it's due.

What time?

5 am.

PS: "That" person does not answer phone calls after 6pm. She's either constantly working or apparently dropped off the face of the earth. Note to self next time: When I need to get something from somebody, I'll fucking drive to Clayton to pick up the carbon copy myself, even if it's off the clock. Fuck!

^^haha, we do those. we didn't have a lunch and learn today, but just got out of a staff meeting. it's fun how the staff meetings all break up into little groups after to talk about the big staff meeting

i haven't picked an alliance yet, so i'm not yet included on these little meetings

Motherfuckers eating lunch in my office and then throwing their trash in my little Panthers trashcan instead of the big ass one in the hall

Motherfuckers forgetting to buy tissues...its flu season and I'm tired of wiping my nose with toilet paper

This particular motherfucker mired in a 3-17 slump at shooting the little tinfoil gum wrappers at the same trashcan 12 feet from my desk

"Hey...would you print me directions?"
*hand them directions*
"These aren't the right ones. You have me going through downtown!!!!!!!"
"Ma'am, Wade Ave isn't downtown, but if you know how to get there, I'm a little confused as to why you need directions printed out"
"I need mapquest!"

People who ask me to call them a cab and indicate they'll wait outside.
When the cab calls my phone back, I check the lobby before telling them that the client isn't inside, and they should be out there. Cabby leaves, and 5 minutes later, the client comes strolling out looking for their cab.

the two biggest causes for stress at work:

1. boss/owner not providing the supplies needed to do the work
2. same boss/owner not placing orders when they need to be placed and going to work on his boat instead

'men' who talk, about work, in the bathroom

okay, talking in the bathroom is a pretty egregious sin all on its own, but for christ sakes!... the bathroom is supposed to be a place of relaxation, peace, and recovery, NOT a place to ask how one anothers report/analysis is going!
