I got on my HOA board because they were insano, and I like to think that I've de-Nazified it to some degree.
HOA are good to a certain extent, but how far should they go in telling people what they can and can't do on their own property?
Anyhoo, that is another topic for another thread. Back on topic, thank Allah it's been raining for awhile now. 3/31/2008 8:44:51 AM |

While the lakes are now full, I think the groundwater takes a lot longer to get back to normal levels, doesn't it? I really think we need to keep Stage 1 restrictions through the summer, and consider making them permanent (seeing as how we keep adding customers to the system and can't exactly build another reservoir....) 4/6/2008 8:29:47 PM |

Actually there is talk of another reservoir in eastern wake county (off the Little River). They've also broke ground on a water treatment plant on Lake Benson.

Those will help, but I doubt either of those will give us a surplus of water. Some form of water conservation being mandatory and year round is the best bet for the long term. 4/6/2008 9:04:06 PM |

^ While grease was the main reason cited for the ban, water use was also a reason. FYI:
Quote : | "'The disposals are a big environmental impact in a negative direction on the system, in terms of the water it uses, grease,' Meeker said. 'I don't think there's any question about that.'" |
http://www.wral.com/news/local/politics/story/2581277/
Quote : | "Meeker laid out three reasons for the ban: Garbage disposals guzzle water in a time of drought; add grease that causes spills in the sanitary sewer system; and add nitrogen to the water that leads to pollution downstream." |

Yeah, but the grease was the main reason. I was just trying to say they aren't going to go away as a result of us having more water for now. 4/7/2008 12:17:03 PM |

i remember many years ago when G105 was still bob and madison. they did an april fool's joke where they did a "public service announcement" that there was too much water and the reservoirs were overflowing, so the state wanted everyone to leave their faucets running for one day only while they were at work. apparently a lot of people are stupid and did it, and then of course the radio station got into trouble. 4/7/2008 1:35:54 PM |

mhum, my garbage disposal turns on my faucet and drains all my water when i'm not even looking!
Quote : | "so why is it so bad to dump grease down the drain? i always wondered that" |
because grease is only liquid when it's hot, like after you finish grilling bacon or a steak. If you dump it down your drain then, it will sit in your p-trap, then when it cools it will turn solid. Do that enough and your drains will be completely clogged. Alternatively, if you pour burning-hot grease directly from your stove, you can melt your pipes. Grease should be poured in an aluminum can until it cools and solidifies, then it can be thrown in the trash. Or wait till it cools in the pan and clean it out with paper towels4/7/2008 3:26:03 PM |

Well, if water use is such a big issue, what's to stop the mayor and friends from banning dishwashers?
^^ All that's true, but the following was allegedly the main objection:
Raleigh, N.C., Bans New Garbage Disposals
Quote : | "Starting Monday, new garbage disposals are banned in Raleigh, N.C. Officials say the appliances allow grease to accumulate in sewers, leading to sewage spills [emphasis added]. But a lot of homeowners, and a company that makes the kitchen appliances, consider the ban invasive and misdirected.
To try to prevent environmentally damaging sewage spills, city crews use a special truck to flush away grease with water and chemicals. They do it on every sewer line in Raleigh — repeating the process about twice a year.
Mayor Charles Meeker says the annual cost runs into the millions of dollars, and he blames much of the problem on garbage disposals, which he says encourage bad kitchen habits [emphasis added].
'You certainly can put grease down a sink without a disposal, but when you have a disposal in a house, you're more likely to grind up things like chicken bones,' Meeker says. 'And the amount of grease that comes out of each house is increased by about 20 percent, which across the city is thousands and thousands of gallons.'" |

hooksaw All American 16500 Posts user info edit post |
^ A couple of studies have shown that to be the case, but the water conservation is difficult to measure because it depends largely on the hand-dishwasher and his or her methods. In addition, if you don't open the dishwasher door and let your dishes air dry, you are using additional electricity for the heated-dry cycle--and adding a bit of heat to the home unnecessarily.
In any event, sink disposals are legal devices that are widely available for public and private use. My point was what's to stop the Disposalcrats from banning other legal devices or kitchen appliances that they deem environmentally unfriendly? 4/9/2008 2:18:50 AM |

Panel Urges Disposal of Disposal Ban Posted: Apr. 8 12:16 p.m. Updated: Apr. 8 3:21 p.m.
Raleigh, N.C. — A City Council committee voted unanimously Tuesday to recommend Raleigh scrap its 3-week-old ban on garbage disposals.
The Budget and Economic Development Committee agreed to review the ordinance, which has drawn fire from residents, builders and disposal manufacturers since the council passed the measure a month ago.
The full council would have to vote to rescind the ban at its meeting next week.
City officials backed the disposal ban – it's among the first nationwide – because they said food scraps and other debris clog municipal sewer lines, causing overflows that are costly to repair and that could potentially harm the environment4/9/2008 9:25:45 AM |
