I trolled some clarkspoons out of Beaufort Inlet on Thursday last week. Did some inshore/inlet fishing the rest of the weekend. The fishing was great, but the catching wasnt worth a damn.

to win "runs shallowest on plane" you have to have enough motor to get on plane

i had an old merc 20 and it wouldn't put my 16' on plane. the 30 is perfect though.

I dont even check up until I see about 1.5 feet on the depth finder and she starts to kick up sand.

when my depthfinder stops working i know i'm about as shallow as i can go w/ the motor down

i put it on plane in 1.5' or so. and if i'm already on plane i can skim across a flat that's a little less than 1'.

the last thing you do is bring it down off plane

Right now I have a Shimano Ultegra 5000 for surf fishing.
I'm thinking about giving it back to my dad and buying a new reel because I don't want to screw it up in the saltwater/sand. I just got a Stradic back from Shimano that was repaired after taking a jump off of a pier and I don't want that to happen to any more of my reels.

So...I need recommendations on saltwater spinning reals that are cheap.
I had looked at the Penn 550ssg and 650ssm but don't want to spend $120.
There are some older model Shimano Spheros on sale on the web that look like they might be a good deal. Anyone have or used a Spheros?

Other than the Penns and Spheros, what other models can handle being in salt water and don't cost an arm and a leg?
The reel will go on a 9 ft rod and probably be loaded with 30 lb braid.

I picked up two Diawa Rod/Reel combos from Frisco Rod and Gun two years ago for $17 a piece, and they done just fine. I just rinse them out good after each use in saltwater. I dont know what you're looking for out of a reel, but for the money, you cant beat those.

stradics/ultegras will do just fine in salt water if you rinse them with fresh water after each use. some wd-40 never hurt anything either

but if you really want something that is made for salt, just break down and spend the money on a quantum cabo or boca. i have a cabo 20 and it's the best spinning reel i've ever owned. performs as good as a $700 shimano stella

I ended up getting a Shimano Spheros 8000FB off of ebay for a pretty good deal.
Spooled it up with 30 lb Sufix braid.

The main purpose of the reel is surf fishing with my Tsunami rod.
However, I would like to use it on a boat for cobia, spanish makerel, blues, amberjacks, or whatever else you'd find within a few miles of NC.

I have a Stradic 5000 on a 7' Compre rod rated up to 20 lb line, but thought it'd be nice to have a second setup that can handle heavier stuff.

What rod would any of you get to go with this reel for fishing off of a boat for those species?
I'd be fishing with spoons, bucktails, soft plastics, and natural baits on bottom rigs.

My dad has a spare 7' Compre , the same as the one I have, that I could get. Do yall think it's too light for somewhat bigger fish?
One option might be an Ugly Stik because I don't have much money (the state hasn't paid me for working on that big fire ). Ugly Stiks seem real whippy. What are yalls thoughts?

I love St. Croix rods especially the 6' medium. We use our 2000 and 4000 Stradics on 6' Medium St. Croixs for Mahi's, Cobia and other big fish and haven't had a problem.

This season we just picked up two Shimano Trevala Spinning Rods and they are about as thick as a medium rod but are rated up to 100lbs line.

How much were those Trevala rods?
Are those the rods made for jigging?
Are they stiff enough to get good hook sets?

They run about $100. And they are spinning rods made for jigging but use them everything and yes they are stiff enough to set the hook...but I leave that to Bill Dance.

The Trevalas look like good choices.
Would you think the medium light Trevala would cast small stuff well (jerk baits on 1/4oz jigheads)?
I think their rated for 55+ gram lures, that's almost 2 oz.
I'm just thinking ahead and this rod/reel combo could be used in rivers for stripers.

Yes. Thats what makes these rods so great; they have the feel of a really light rod but they can handle the big stuff.

That sounds great.

Which model did you get?
If I was going to get one should I go with the 7' medium-light or the 6.5' medium?

We are using the 6'6 Medium Heavy. If you have a chance, try to find a tackle shop that has them in stock and look at the rods in persons.

i never mail order rods unless i've checked it out in a store or something

the different actions aren't the same for different manufacturers or even different rod series by the same manufacturer
