WRIGHT: Have you read Horowitz’s book, “Emerging Viruses: AIDS and Ebola,” whoever wrote that question? Have you read “Medical Apartheid”? You’ve read it?
(UNKNOWN): Do you honestly believe that (OFF-MIKE)
WRIGHT: Oh, are you — is that one of the reporters?
MODERATOR: No questions -
(CROSSTALK)
WRIGHT: No questions from the floor. I read different things. As I said to my members, if you haven’t read things, then you can’t — based on this Tuskegee experiment and based on what has happened to Africans in this country, I believe our government is capable of doing anything.
In fact, in fact, in fact, one of the — one of the responses to what Saddam Hussein had in terms of biological warfare was a non- question, because all we had to do was check the sales records. We sold him those biological weapons that he was using against his own people.
So any time a government can put together biological warfare to kill people, and then get angry when those people use what we sold them, yes, I believe we are capable. " |
That is the quote in question. Not quite saying that the government invented AIDS, but that they are capable of it.

Yeah, I didn't see the National Press Conference video, but that is a pretty crazy thing to say on national TV (although I don't think the gov. created AIDS, and the modern gov. wouldn't do something like that, I wouldn't be surprised to hear about other conspiracies the gov. has been involved in), and that appears to be what changed for Obama: http://www.freep.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20080429/NEWS07/80429071/1009/NEWS07

It's not that his campaign advisers are inferior, it's that the media had an early Christmas with the gift of video that Wright offered them.
And Obama never brought Wright up on the campaign trail, Wright was brought to him. I don't know how much more distancing Obama could have done, unless he anticipated 20 years ago that in 2005 he was going to run for president. And Obama's already admitted a while ago he hasn't been in "regular" attendance of Wright's churches for a while.4/30/2008 4:22:08 PM |

Well, first, what would they have done? Because 3 years ago would have still encompassed 1 or 2 videos of wright being shown.
And secondly, doesn't the fact that they didn't maybe corroborate the idea that Wright didn't constantly "rant" about things, and instead preach (the vidoes of Wright on trinity's site should actually corroborate this idea)?

i dont blame anybody for having their pastor marry them...that seems kind of intuitive if you go to church to get someone you know to marry you instead of a "random" priest
but it seems obama was more than just a member of the church...that he was closer to his pastor than some people who go to church...which is fine...unless you have aspirations of being president, when your entire life gets put under a microscope by the media...it gets worse and worse every election cycle
The Media: fucking up our country all the time

This is a pretty broad, generalized statement to make. There are many, many, many reasons why someone keeps a "friend" for 20 years. As Newt Gingrich said, they have a complex relationship.
Honestly, it seems that the real reason you're making a big deal out of this is because you don't have jack shit on Obama and you're just grasping at straws.

Do the right thing and shut up, Lee urges pastor
Quote : | "Director Spike Lee has waded into the ongoing controversy surrounding Jeremiah Wright, the Chicago pastor whose provocative statements have proved a thorn in the side of Democrat frontrunner Barack Obama. Lee advises the preacher to do the right thing and keep quiet. 'The more he opens his mouth, the more damage he does,' he told the Guardian yesterday.
For good measure, Lee hinted at a political conspiracy behind Wright's recent, contentious attempts to justify his remarks. 'It looks like he's being paid to keep talking,' he said." |
Quote : | "'Jeremiah Wight needs to be quiet,' Lee said yesterday. 'If he loves Obama he needs to shut up right now. It makes me question his motives for talking. I'm starting to wonder whether somebody has been contributing to the building funds of his church. Seriously.'" |

I personally don't think Wright's current round in the news has anything to do with his relationship for Obama.
Wright is very much his own man and I don't think it's about politics for him. I think it's very personal. I'm sure he realizes that him getting back in the news might hurt Obama. At the same time, he wants to explain himself and his remarks. I don't know whether he is doing it out of concern for his church or because he's pissed that he's the butt of a national media joke (at times it seems like both), but I don't he's really concerned about Obama's poll numbers.
Really, I think I understand Wright better after he made the round explaining himself. I think he seems like an animated and descent person that probably doesn't deserve the treatment he's recieved from the pundits. At the same time, I disagree with most everything he says that relates to politics and race. And I think the fact that he is Obama's pastor is certainly relevant information for evaluating Obama's background and judgement.
Now, I don't think Obama is actually a paranoid radical like Wright. Instead, I think Obama's decision to attend Wright's church was totally political. Someone else said it best: "Before Obama was a half-black man running for President of a largely white country, he was a half-white man running for Congress in a largely black district." I think this fits much better with Obama's history of scrambling for ever-higher public office than the idea that he actually agrees with Wright. And I think that says more about Obama thant Wright could ever say. 5/5/2008 1:31:58 PM |
