Quote : | " Whether it will be enough for McCain is tough to see. I don't seem him riding this wave to november, but it may damage Obama enough to give him a better chance. Of course, it can all backfire on him too, but then he's really no worse than he was before, as we are constantly reminded, 2nd place doesn't count for anything in the elections anymore." |
Riding what wave? Obama is up in the polls, and McCain is down post Palin.
You have radio DJs making fun of Palin in a derogatory way, her face is all over supermarket tabloids like she was Britney Spears, and now no one can really talk about her without mocking her. It's kind of like Bill Clinton, certain people may respect him, and he may be worthy of respect, but no one thinks about him without also thinking about the Lewinsky scandal. Who's to say Gore wouldn't have won the 2000 election if it wasn't for that one marital infidelity?
And I don't really think this is a "normal people" problem that normal people can relate to. Most people know someone who's had a kid out of wedlock, or have a friend of family member who has a teen pregnancy, but that doesn't mean they don't look down on those people in secret, or wonder where their parents went wrong (because isn't that what people always wonder in those situations?).
And peoples' private thoughts have a bigger effect on how they vote than what they say publicly I imagine (which could mean that Obama's numbers are inflated because someone who is racist won't say that in a survey, but they may vote that way).
The main point though is that so far, there is no sign this is helping McCain. It could turn out like you described, but it could easily be very bad here on out for McCain.
But, in this race so far, no one event has lasted more than a week, and there are several weeks left yet.9/3/2008 5:41:46 PM |

Who do radio DJs not deride? But again, this is precisely my point. It's Palin that's all over the news not Obama. Again, this week should have been fawning over what a uniter Obama was with his rousing speech to bring all the Hillary supporters together with is supporters, but it isn't. Obama isn't anywhere on the news at all except standing up there going "Hey... hey guys... lets not .... you know... bring family into this... hey you guys... hey..."

Right, but most normal people also say to themselves some variation on "there but for the grace of god go I". Most people can relate to either knowing or being someone with a teen daughter who was pregnant, and while they may still look down on someone for it, most people would never wish to see the media hound and ground out that story on the 6 o'clock news.

Oh it's absolutely a dangerous move that could cement McCains loss, but as I said, he has nothing to lose, he was already going to lose, and no VP pick short of Jesus Christ himself (and even then, there would be hell to pay) would save McCain. As was mentioned previously, VPs traditionally don't matter much, but Palin matters, it's just a matter of who she hurts more.9/3/2008 6:03:25 PM |

CNN had some news stories including the question of whether or not she should be removed, and quoting people saying she should be.
Some liberal blogs have suggested she was picked as a possible bait and switch candidate.
Those are the only 2 area's Ive seen such rumblings, but nothing very serious yet.
I think mostly people just don't know who she is or anything about her.

Palin's attorney, Thomas Van Flein, filed complaint papers Monday night with the state attorney general's office to request the investigation be taken out of the hands of the Legislature.
...
There was no immediate response from state Sen. Hollis French, who is managing the investigation launched in July by the bipartisan Legislative Council " |
I didn't use undue political influence in troopergate, and to prove it I'll have a small 3 person board appointed by a republican to determine my innocence rather than the standard constitutional check & balance of allowing the legislative branch to conduct investigations into the actions of an executive position!
She's barely had any executive experience and she's already trying to expand that executive privilege.
I've heard she refuses participate, testify, or allow anyone else under her to testify until she takes control of who is running the investigation.

Quote : | " (CNN) – Prominent Republican analysts Peggy Noonan and Mike Murphy became the latest victims of an open microphone Wednesday, caught after a segment on MSNBC trashing John McCain's pick of Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin as his running mate.
Noonan, a Wall Street Journal columnist and former speechwriter for Ronald Reagan, and Murphy, a campaign strategist and onetime aide to John McCain, can both be heard expressing disbelief with the pick of Palin after they apparently thought they were in a commercial break.
“I come out of the blue swing-state governor world, Engler, Whitman, Thompson, Mitt Romney,” Murphy said during the mishap which has since been posted on YouTube. Murphy later flatly says of the pick, "It's not going to work."
Noonan is heard going even further, saying of the presidential race, "It's over."
"I think they went for this — excuse me– political bulls–t about narratives," Noonan also said. "Every time the Republicans do that, because that's not where they live and it's not what they're good at, they blow it."
Murphy, who was a senior adviser to John McCain's 2000 presidential bid, also adds, "You know what's really the worst thing about it? The greatness of McCain is no cynicism, and this is cynical." " |

Quote : | "Westmoreland calls Obama ‘uppity'
By Mike Soraghan Posted: 09/04/08 03:07 PM [ET] Georgia Republican Rep. Lynn Westmoreland used the racially-tinged term "uppity" to describe Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama Thursday. Westmoreland was discussing vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin's speech with reporters outside the House chamber and was asked to compare her with Michelle Obama. "Just from what little I’ve seen of her and Mr. Obama, Sen. Obama, they're a member of an elitist-class individual that thinks that they're uppity," Westmoreland said.
Asked to clarify that he used the word “uppity,” Westmoreland said, “Uppity, yeah.”
Other Democrats have charged that the Republican campaign to paint the Illinois senator as an “elitist” is racially charged, and accused them of using code words for “uppity” without using the word itself." |

uppity is definitely discriminatory in context.
it literally describes "someone who doesn't know their place"
but it can apply equally to women as well as minorities.
its one of those things when said, that you know is founded in racist thought, but you can't really do much of anything about it, except bitch.
