Just saw the menu for Raleigh times' beer dinner wednesday the week of beerfest... holy shit. 3 courses, 3 flights, and every single beer is limited in release. They are opening up all 8 keg lines and pouring 4 from the bottle for a total of 4 beers per course. Included are kegs of hopslam, KBS, and a couple other bourbon barrel aged beers to finish.

I've been on a real Rogue kick recently. Had the Hazelnut Brown Nectar this weekend, bought it at Peace St. Market. Holy shit was that a deliciously smooth and drinkable beer. Sweet, complex smell and a gorgeous orange tinted brown color. 10/10 would purchase/drink again.

I'm officially over Fat Tire

I rarely drink less than 4 beers at one time, and the biscuit like taste of it makes more than 1 or 2 a burden

Super-High-Alcohol Beer Heads to the U.S.

Quote :
"The drinking games continued in February when a German brewer, Schorschbrau, released a 40% ABV beer called Schorschbock. The BrewDog boys fired back a few weeks later with high-octane concoction Sink the Bismarck!, which checks in at 41%, enough to reclaim the "world's strongest beer" mantle (the name is a not-so-subtle reference to the famous German battleship deployed during World War II).

i always kinda wondered how that was done

most standard yeasts peter out wayyyyyyy before that

i like to go high gravity with my brewing, but use high gravity yeasts... however, ive never gone over like 18.5% abv.

^^Yeah I think all the beers that are above 20% ABV or so end up using some form of distillation.

^what'd you think of the Highland Seven Sisters? I thought it was really good, though the reviews on BA haven't been as kind. Also I was pretty disappointed by the Monk's Revenge, when I was drinking it I kept thinking that I wished I was drinking Raging Bitch instead.

haven't tried the Highland yet - not sure if it's just me but they never seem to get much love, though anything they put out is an automatic buy for me

agreed on the Monk's Revenge, luckily it was only a single from Sam's as I'd take a six pack of Raging Bitch for $8.49 over this any day - I didn't think the Capt'n Krunkles was anything special, either

Having one of these currently, and it is surprisingly solid (especially at $4.99 a six pack) as I don't usually care for the Mendocino beers:

Also picked up one of the Sam Adams Longshot six packs and some Gubna and Imperial Mad Hatter.

^I also am not a big fan of Sam Adams Summer ale.

Drinking an Oscar Blues Gubna atm, and I'm really digging it so far...it's interesting that they only used Summit hops (which I'm not especially familiar with) but it really helps you get a better idea of what individual hop varieties taste/smell like without interference.

I love the Sam Summer Ale, but it's better on tap (as you might expect).

Have a 6-pack of Magic Hat Vinyl (their spring lager) at home that I haven't gotten into yet. That situation will be rectified this evening, though.

armorfrsleep, where did you find that smoked doppelbock (assuming you're Raleigh area local). I've only had one smoked beer, but I quite liked it and would like to try more.

I like bananas, but hate banana flavored stuff. So I'll pass on that. Same deal with grapes. Reminds of my mom forcing Dimetap down my throat as a kid whenever I coughed. Bitch.

If only it weren't $6.99....

Haven't had it but I did have the Triangle Habanero Pale which I was told Rogue blows out of the water.. and I really liked it.

I think we should be getting it here in the Raleigh FS shortly as well...

** What are you guys' thoughts on Steam beers? I love Anchor Steam but I know a lot of people don't like Steam beers for some reason...

Anyone know of any other stores that let you build a 6-pack besides Total Wine?

yeah that has been one of my favorite beers ever since I tried it at Flying Saucer many years ago. I used to get a 22oz everytime I went to Total Wine, but havent had one in a while as I've tried to try new stuff. It's still a great, smooth beer. much better on tap at FS than out of the bottle, btw

I actually quite enjoy this beer, but you've got to go into it expecting it to be smoky and spicy (hot).

Having one of these at the moment:

It's pretty decent, kind of a cross between a pilsner and a pale ale.

I found out about a really cool website at beerfest, http://www.beerburglar.com/; you can pick a beer and it'll show you where you can get it, the price, and how it is served. Haven't played with it too much but it seems to have potential. Raleigh only though, I think

^that site is fucking lame, it also isn't updated very often judging by the amount of fall seasonals still listed on it. You'd be way better off just looking at a bar's twitter/facebook page or using http://www.beerinator.com or the beerfly feature on Beer Advocate to figure out what different bars have.

there's a barleywine/high alcohol lineup going on at my local beer pub so i had a mini vertical tasting of sierra nevada big feet this evening -- split tasters of '02, '03, '04, and '05

'02 and '03 were excellent, '05 not so great, '04 ok

gonna do a barleywine comparison across breweries on friday, i think -- there's also quite a few imperial stouts on tap, but that may have to wait for another night
