Chatting online is silly if you don't plan to meet. Are you looking for a pen pal? Actual dating is a chore, no doubt about it, but its a necessary evil for the most part. The first couple always feel like an interview, like you have to be "on" the whole night. Alcohol helps, but you still have that 'don't fuck up, don't fuck up' thought process going on. I generally do one hang out type date, be it pool, putt putt, whatever, followed by a real date with dinner and drinks. If I'm not getting anywhere physically at this point, I generally cut my losses, unless I'm really into her. I realize some people like to wait for sex, but I simply don't have the patience to do so.

the problem with online dating is that you are given that "abort mission" button easily if you're feeling sour about the situation. if things aren't jiving you can just disappear no questions asked as opposed to meeting the person IRL beforehand in which you've already established contact.

i understand seeing it that way. It's definitely not my intent. I've never really done the online dating thing until now. I created a profile three years ago just weeks before i met my recent ex, so i never really got into any communication with anyone. so no, no ego stroking. initial nerves, probably.

Having met and dated a handful of fun chicks via OKQupid and eharmony, in 2011 I joined match just for casual dating as I was planning on moving back to Raleigh and then leaving this March to hike the Appalachian Trail. Having stated all of this explicitly on my profile, I was still messaged by a girl from High Point who thought I was interesting and we started talking. So as these things work out when you aren't looking, she and I fell in lurrrrrrve and are now engaged. We are still moving to Boone this summer, and I am hiking the AT with her in sections instead of thru-hiking alone. Nothing else was really changed or sacrificed. The only downside is that she went to Carolina.

tl;dr: Met a girl on Match in 2011, getting married to her this October.

There's no set rule. I've gone on a date with someone I only emailed once. If you feel an immediate spark and you know you have enough shared interests and commonalities, then might as well just meet in person.

But there's nothing wrong with sending several emails and getting to know the person online better first.

Do match and okcupid... they're faster and you have access to more profiles. eHarmony is very controlling about who you can contact. However, I think the users on eHarmony are more serious about marriage.
