Word on the street is that 1.2 will be out in a few weeks. Anyone know if it will require a map reset? 2/24/2012 7:05:15 PM |

1.2 will automatically convert old maps to the new format.
Jeb also had the following to say about the new save format: "NOTE: This snapshot will convert the maps you load to the new file format. If you want to revert to the old format, you need to replace the 'level.dat' file with the file called 'level.dat_mcr'. The new format will write world regions to files called '*.mca', so your original regions will remain as '*.mcr'."

I was on last night with no errors either.
I was able to upgrade to 1.2 and then revert back to 1.1 and still login if anyone's wanting to try it out. I just backed up my entire "bin" folder in .minecraft and copied it back after I tried out 1.2 3/7/2012 1:04:48 PM |

Looks like it has the potential to make some epic maps! I'm a fan of the floating island style maps personally, as they feel like they add a bit of an unusual challenge.

looks like they released 1.2.4 today. I'm a little confused though on how the bukkit builds are being done now since the 4 guys from bukkit joined mojang a while back. Does that mean that the 1.2.4 server should work or not?
I think I saw somewhere that craftbukkit hasn't been updated yet, not even for 1.2.3 but are we even running any plugins currently? Prob. something to prevent using certain blocks but if not why don't we just run 1.2.4

Noen has given me some admin responsibilities. I'll try and look through the last couple of pages and whitelist anyone that isn't currently, but post again if you don't have access.
I'm still trying to figure out how to manage everything, but I'm gonna try and get the server updated to one of the newer versions, keeping the same map for now. 4/8/2012 8:30:36 PM |

Ok, I updated to 1.2.5, the most current build. Should be able to find some cats/jungle biomes.
Let me know if anyone is having lag or any other issues and I'll look into it. Also if there are any plugins that anyone wants I'll look into it. Trying to keep it pretty much vanilla but we can consider anything if it's not too crazy/game changing.
Height limit is now 256....have fun with that

wawebste, you are a gentleman and a scholar for updating the server and rendering it, so thank you!
As for any mods etc., I can't think of anything at the moment, but I'm excited for the new height limit. Maybe some sort of world generation mod if we choose to restart the map at some point in the future - speaking of that, do we anticipate a reset sometime soon, or are we just going to keep this map around for a while? I'm currently indifferent to a reset, so if anyone has an opinion, feel free to share! 4/9/2012 9:50:57 PM |

No problem...I'm gonna try and keep the map render updated, but if anyone wants me to do an update just post in here...also let me know if you want a copy of the map, I can send it or host it somewhere if you want it.
It's still Noen's server so I'm not in charge by any means, just helping to manage it, so I'll try and make decisions like whether to do a map restart based on popular demand. Probably gonna stick with the current one for a little while just to make sure everything is running smoothly. I'm still looking into mods and haven't figured out if our current map will generate jungles or not.
I've also been thinking about hosting some adventure maps if anyone is interested. We would need to plan them in advance, but basically I could just take down the current map(completely backed up) and then load an adventure map for us to play on for a bit and then reload the backup. Could be fun if we could organize and have several users play at once since most adventure maps are intended for just one play-through. Let me know if anyone has any suggestions for those. 4/10/2012 12:31:06 AM |

That sounds great! Some maps that come to mind include anything in the Vechs Super Hostile series of maps, as well as more novelty stuff like Skyblock or others. That could be pretty fun to schedule in and try out!4/10/2012 1:25:41 AM |

jcdomini Veteran 376 Posts user info edit post |
Define "Get into minecraft"?
With regards to the bare minimum, go here: http://www.minecraft.net
and purchase your copy of Minecraft - it's a quick download of an .exe and you're off to go! You'll register your account, and then be presented with two game modes: Singleplayer and Multiplayer
Singleplayer Pretty self-explanatory, you're on your own in a world to explore and build as you see fit
Multiplayer There are a number of routes to go here, as there are literally thousands of available servers. They're essentially singleplayer with multiple people in the same server, but the mod community is huge, so there are a vast number of possibilities with regards to what kind of experience to expect. Some servers are shaped around PvP combat, some around more MMORPG-style interactions, and some are just casual, such as ours. In order to access the tdub server, go to the multiplayer server list and enter this info:
Server mc.thewolfweb.com:25565
Just let us know your in-game name and we'll whitelist you in order to allow you access to the server. 5/8/2012 8:51:56 PM |

Swords, bows/arrows, and possibly other less significant means (traps, potions, etc.). Check out the minecraft wiki via Google to get a feel for some of the game mechanics and a basic introduction - I'd also suggest looking at YouTube for some videos to see things in action.

minecraft pvp?
let's be for serious. combat in minecraft is a joke. pretty much just an annoyance to encourage you to build better defenses
if you want to shoot people in the face: http://www.ace-spades.com/ 5/8/2012 9:15:27 PM |

^Ace of Spades kind of ruins your logic, considering it's even more dumbed down combat, just with different weapons. Minecraft combat on PVP servers is actually very difficult and takes a lot of effort. It's one of the only things I enjoy about social minecraft, and it's the primary reason I don't play on our server--no people and no conflict. Plus, I don't want to be a dick in my own community going on a rampage. 5/8/2012 11:20:10 PM |

AoS is a hell of a lot of fun to me. I don't really need 50 weapons for interesting gameplay. The fact that you can build (and destroy) defenses in real time is cool enough.
I dunno... I'm having a really hard time imagining what could possibly be so great about minecraft PVP. There are no skills, there are no spells. Outside of bows, combat is extremely basic and clumsy. Any time/effort invested in the game could be completely wiped out by other players. I could see myself enjoying the danger aspect (i.e. just trying to avoid other people), but the combat? I'm not seeing it. And I hate to encourage others to buy the game just for the PVP.
Tell me what I'm missing.

Wait, you've played both games right? How do you not see that both games play almost exactly the same? Both have a few weapons, some with physics but mostly just straight-forward shit. Both have block-based live-action environments. They both have no player-based skills (though Minecraft has weapon and armor effects). The only different thing here is that Minecraft has more content in the environments, more weapons and combat-benefit accessories (potions, which are themselves complex and can be used defensively or offensively, individually or for groups; health-restoring food items; lava and water that rapidly change the environment; pets that can fight; golems you can summon; tiered weapons and armor, tiered enchants for weapons and armor that give you a variety of added-on skills and abilities). Minecraft simply has -more- to combat.
I'm not saying Minecraft combat is amazing or revolutionary, but I really don't follow how Ace of Spades is better here? Maybe if you prefer team-based environment, FPS over physical combat, simplified gameplay and multi-life goal-based gamemodes on a small map. They have the same kind of game environment but the "methodology" of their gameplay is totally different. Minecraft emphasizes survival and strategy and armor/weapon improvement, i.e. longevity; Ace of Spades is match-based, not based on player longevity, and goal-centered, i.e. fast-paced.
I just don't get the comparison here, or why one is an example of the other being bad. Personally I think they're different but that Ace of Spades is tragically lower-quality and for me brings much less gameplay satisfaction--because I prefer the type of game that Minecraft is. I'm also a long time player of PVP games, and Minecraft allows for you to be in a 24-hour real time world with that same member-base with constant conflict, looting, feuds, and strategy. I get why you may not like that combat, it's just strange to me that you perplexed by it.
tl;dr you're missing a 24-hour dynamic environment with clan warfare, constant conflict, competitive resources, varied environments in which to fight over, real-time sustained battles, focus on longevity and survival.
