you're right, the weather stations located where the eye made landfall are wrong!!
[Edited on September 2, 2011 at 12:41 PM. Reason : i realize these are measurements taken at the surface. Isn't that the standard measurement point?] 9/2/2011 12:37:14 PM |

I didn't say anything about the stations being right or wrong.

I'm no weather expert, either.
I'll bite, but first I'd like you to state your position in your own words. Tell me what you'd like to discuss.

I followed this hurricane almost all the way through. There were times when I thought that the wind speeds might be being exaggerated. Whether to save face, or to keep people from underestimating a still very dangerous storm. A particular instance was the path into the northeast. The storm was sucking in dry air, it looked like shit, made a second landfall in NJ, and the pressure was rising very quickly, yet they were still hanging on to the 75 mph winds that they had been for several hundred miles. It seemed a little off.
Also, there was an update from one of the Storm Chasers guys who said "Tropical Storm...excuse me Hurricane Irene". 9/2/2011 2:33:34 PM |

^^^^Get the conspiracy theory out of here. Yes this storm was overhyped but it had pressure still in the 960s when it was rapidly rising. That is very appropriate for those winds. Hurricane hunters were still flying in and recording those winds aloft while it was off the coast of the midatlantic. 9/2/2011 4:17:42 PM |

Exactly.
Katia is a non issue. Will she produce nice surf this weekend though? I might head down to the coast.9/6/2011 1:47:18 PM |

Tropical Storm Lee is a butthead. My entire nursing program was stuck in an auditorium with each other for 2 hours as we waited for the tornado warning to go away. We spotted funnel clouds in the direction of Hillsborough- maybe that was the tornado just spawned in Schley?
At least my test was canceled . 9/6/2011 2:03:49 PM |

There was a ferry terminal that had 90mph sustained with a gust to 115. That tells me it was a hurricane at landfall in NC. 9/7/2011 3:26:35 PM |

You people, scheduling trips to the DR and PR, etc. etc. in the middle of hurricane season. I will never understand it. 9/21/2011 9:49:57 AM |

^I lived in the DR for two years, got lucky in that there wasn't a hurricane the whole time. In that same time period there were several back in NC. But yeah, why risk it - just go when it's not hurricane season. Besides, what better time to go than Jan or Feb when you want a break from the colder weather.
