I was listening to NPR on the way home today and they said that it was likely contained in a pressure cooker, as mentioned earlier in this thread. When I heard that, I immediately thought 'Taliban'. Also, a witness described a plume of white smoke. In a high explosive, this usually indicates the presence of metal oxides in the detonation products. Typically this is aluminum powder. Devices of this type were recovered in great numbers in Helmand between 2009 and 2011. There are conflicting reports of a low order explosive which would indicate a propellant or fuel/oxidizer mix. Some of those also produce white smoke. This is a bit more believable to me as high order explosives would be difficult to detonate without a commercial blasting cap or the ability to work with primary: most likely beyond the capability of your average crazy dude. My guess is that it is a US citizen that was 'inspired' by the taliban IEDs used in the Afghan theatre of operations. Possibly a disgruntled veteran.

These appear to be HME IED's from what I've seen. My guess would be ANAL main charge with a simple casing i.e. paint can, trash can ect. Almost certainly command detonated most likely with an RC device. That kind of device was indeed common in Helmand Province from 2009-2011 (I was there) however if that was the inspiration for the device it is unlikely a pressure cooker would be used as was mentioned earlier. Those haven't been seen much at all in Afghanistan in the last 10 years as they were easily picked up by metal detectors. Of course this is all speculation.
