Looks like researchers are just now getting around to characterizing how fundamental racism has been in shaping our politics in the past few years
This confirms Trump is the result of a trend, not an anomaly, in our right wing politics. 9/22/2018 11:03:13 PM |

Hmm. I don't dispute that white identity politics are strongly at play here, but I'm a little wary of the wording of the questions. For example, I would agree that "African Americans should not have special favors" and "African Americans must try harder to succeed." I'm not sure how direct of a connection you can make between some of those questions and racist support for Trump.
Again, I think it's there. I think that's obvious. I'm just not sure this is good evidence for it. 9/23/2018 7:48:40 AM |

Why do you think black people are poorer and incarcerated at higher rates than white people?9/23/2018 3:07:14 PM |
moron All American 34142 Posts user info edit post |
I think that mentality is a failure of our public schools.
it was essentially taught that white people became Americans when they took the effort to settle and colonize here, so they deserve everything they have. Black people became Americans when the civil war ended, and the perception too is everything they have is the deserved outcome of their effort. Obviously the reality is more complex
A good demonstration of this is this study: https://rollingout.com/2017/08/13/average-white-high-school-dropout-earns-more-than-black-college-grad/
Basically black college graduates just barely match the earning potential of white high school dropouts. This isn’t because black people aren’t trying hard enough. 1 in 5 white families have a wealth of a million dollars or more vs 1 in 25 black families... a lazy white person gets a lot farther in life than an averagely ambitious black person.
Look at Kavanaugh and his circle of friends... keggers and rape all through high school but still gets into elite schools?
Also, black women are the most college educated group now: https://www.brookings.edu/blog/social-mobility-memos/2017/12/04/black-women-are-earning-more-college-degrees-but-that-alone-wont-close-race-gaps/ 9/23/2018 3:52:26 PM |

I assume you're trying to say that just because someone has a degree doesn't mean they are "working hard", and thus an explanation for educated black people not being able to accumulate wealth at the level of uneducated white people is that the black people work less hard than the white people.
This might be true for some people on an individual level, but in the aggregate the individual effect of laziness/ambition should even out.
If you're trying to say that there are systemic issues (related to racism) that affect wealth generation that aren't correlated to the "effort" a person expends, then I think you agree with what I was trying to say... 9/23/2018 5:38:25 PM |

Proud boys did a re-enactment of the 1960 assassination of the head of the Japanese Socialist Party at a Republican club yesterday. Then they took to the streets (Gavin McInnes leading the charge with a fucking sword) and attacked several antifa members. Cops arrested the three antifa who were beat up, none of the proud boys. This sounds insane but it's 100% what happened.

The difference being one form of sectarian violence will be brutally suppressed and used as a means of consolidating executive privilege and narrowing political power, and the other form of sectarian violence will be given the tacit (if not explicit) approval of a right-wing government that controls all three branches of government.10/24/2018 12:33:28 PM |

^^^I don't think the right-wing (especially as radical a right-wing we have today) was in such firm control of all three branches of government, though. As conservative as they were, they still had to largely pay lip-service to the fundamentals of democracy and make legislative and policy concessions to the left. I genuinely think they feel that they are now above reproach. I think comparing it to the 60s or 70s kind of blunts the impact of our current state. The forces of capital still had to contend with labor back then. Not so much now. 10/24/2018 12:54:19 PM |

I don't think you'll ever see organized groups like that reappear, simply because it's so easy to digitally spy on anyone believe to be actively organizing. I think we'll just see more raging autists sending out package bombs or shooting up republican baseball practices without any organization behind them.
Groups like the Weather Underground received a lot of funding and training from the KGB, which in light of all the recent focus on foreign meddling in our elections, the FBI, CIA, and NSA are all likely paying a lot more attention to. 10/24/2018 1:51:08 PM |

I think people are underestimating the insidiousness of Trump calling himself a "nationalist". As Maya Angelou said, when people tell you who they are believe them. You become what you pretend to be too, and in Trump's case it's a white nationalist leader explicitly tolerant of violence to reach his goals.
It doesn't happen over night, it happens slowly over months, but the people who needed to hear this hear it and start organizing.
You can bet whoever sent this package bombs had to steep in Trumpism for the past 3 years to reach the point they did, all the while Trump is slowly escalating his rhetoric-- I can't think of a single instance where Trump backed down from something. He still has people chant "lock her up" at his rallies, but now the "her" is everyone from Clinton to Ford to Warren and any other female that's been giving trump grief.
Trump knows what he's doing when he calls democrats evil and the press the enemy, over and over and over. He knowns perfectly well the implications of calling himself a nationalist, he specifically said he staff told him not to do it and i'm sure they explained why. 10/24/2018 2:24:39 PM |
adultswim Suspended 8379 Posts user info edit post |
So my question is who, specifically, is behind this steady escalation, since Trump is almost too stupid to form coherent sentences? Originally, I would have said it's Bannon, but now that he's out, whose master plan is this?

He's dumb but he has strong enough instincts to politically survive anyway possible by eliminating his enemies. Ginning up fascist sentiment achieves that goal, even if he's too stupid to understand the historical implication. He also just doesn't fucking care because he's literally never been held to account for his actions ever in his extremely privileged life. 10/24/2018 2:45:17 PM |

Fox News.
This is your answer. These shit-eaters are the common thread, the abiding force behind it all. They paved the way for Trump, they elevated him, and they create the echo chamber that amplifies all the worst instincts of him and his supporters. They put the culture war at the center of everything, and then they made it a fight to the death where, if the conservatives lost, they'd be made extinct.
Trump could go to prison tomorrow, but it won't really matter until someone figures out how to thwart these guys without destroying the fundamental principles of American government.10/24/2018 3:34:02 PM |
