"Pack 7-foot recruit eager for ACC play
Submitted by kentysiac on 04/29/2009 - 09:09

N.C. State’s newest basketball recruit says he has never played a game in the United States but he already knows about Atlantic Coast Conference basketball.

Jordan Vandenberg is a native of Australia, grew up in Melbourne and his only experience playing in the U.S. is open gyms at the University of Nevada Reno and at Boise State.

But the 7-foot, 235-pound center knows about college basketball.

“[The ACC] is said to be the hardest competition in college basketball and it is always fierce, fast and strong,” Vandenberg said via email.

The opportunity to play in the league is one of the things that made State attractive to him, he said.

But to play in the ACC, Vandenberg knows he needs to gain weight. He hopes to be able to contribute next season.

“I bring length so I would be able to change shots and rebound most importantly,” he said.
“I know I will be playing limited minutes until I can fully hold my own physically,” he said.

Vandenberg chose State over Utah Valley, Boise State and Nevada-Reno.

State assistant coach Pete Strickland spotted Vandenberg during the center’s one year at the Australian Institute of Sport.

Vandenberg said he admires the play of fellow Australian 7-foot, 260-pound Andrew Bogut of the Milwaukee Bucks, a former Utah star, and 7-foot, 250-pound Paul Gasol of the Los Angeles Lakers, who is a native of Spain.

“I admire most Pau Gasol and Andrew Bogut,” he said. “Theyare very skilled and versatile big men.”

Vandenberg is State’s fifth basketball recruit in the Class of 2009.

State also has signed 6-6 forward Josh Davis of Raleigh Athens Drive, 6-5 guard Lorenzo Brown of Roswell (Ga.) Centennial, 6-5 guard Scott Wood of Marion, Ind., and 6-7 forward Richard Howell of Marietta (Ga.) Wheeler.

Gainey hired as an assistant at Elon:
Quote :
"

Justin Gainey was hired by Elon on Wednesday.

The popular former Wolfpack point guard, and director of basketball operations for Sidney Lowe, was hired as an assistant to new Elon coach Matt Matheny.

Gainey, who is from High Point, has worked for Lowe and the Wolfpack for the past three seasons.

He'll forever be remembered for playing every minute of the 1997 ACC Tournament. Gainey's the only player in ACC history to go 40 minutes in four conference tournament games.

Gainey graduated from State in 2000. He joins Matheny, who worked with Bob McKillop for 16 seasons at Davidson.

"Harrow Enters Scout's Latest Top 75

Dave Telep's Release

A few NC State targets for the class of 2010 are on Scout.com's updated list of top 75 prospects, which was released today. Wolfpack commitment Ryan Harrow enters the rankings for the first time, as the Marietta (GA) Walton point guard is ranked No. 50.

Harrow previously had been regarded as a three-star recruit, but is now a four-star prospect and the No. 10 point guard in his class.

As a junior, Harrow had a big-time season for Walton. The 6-foot point guard was one of only two juniors on the AP Class AAAAA first-team all-state team, and he was joined on the team by NC State signees Lorenzo Brown and Richard Howell.

He averaged 28 points per game to help lead Walton to a school-record 19 wins and a solid showing in the state playoffs.

He impressed Scout.com's Dave Telep and Evan Daniels over the past couple of weeks after suiting up with the Atlantic Celtics and OBC on the AAU circuit.

Harrow plans on playing the rest of the summer with the J. Smoove Celtics, and is expected to play at the Bob Gibbons Tournament of Champions.

Other current NC State targets on Scout.com's Top 100 list include C.J. Leslie (No. 12), Luke Cothron (No. 16), Mychal Parker (No. 32), and Will Barton (No. 10) among others.

Leslie, a power forward from Raleigh (NC) Word of God, is now ranked the top prospect in the state. He had been committed to NC State but has since opened back up his recruitment and is hearing from a host of college programs.

Cothron, a power forward who plays for Flora MacDonald Academy in Red Springs (NC), is originally from Alabama. He suits up for Southeast Elite and Boo Williams on the AAU circuit and NC State appears to be in great shape as head coach Sidney Lowe has made Cothron a priority.

"I really like coach Lowe," he recently told Pack Pride. "We've developed a bond and I could see myself playing for him. He lets his players go out and make plays, and I like that."

New Alabama head coach Anthony Grant has made a push with Cothron, hoping to ink the 'Bama native.

Parker, who played this past season at The Miller School (VA) recently claimed an offer from the Wolfpack. The talented wing played with Ryan Harrow at a couple of events and they have formed a connection.

Barton is a new Wolfpack target but remains wide open. NC State assistant coach Larry Harris is recruiting the Baltimore standout. He's regarded as the top shooting guard prospect in the country.

Pack Pride will have an updated recruiting board in the near future so stay tuned!

"Let's remember something here. Coach Lowe offered Ryan before anybody else knew about him, a 3 Star prospect, who was unranked and held no other scholarship offers. Doubt him if you want folks, this man knows what he's doing. "

Glad to see I wasn't the only noticing this. Off the top of my head I know that Lowe was one of the first to find and offer Wall, CJ Leslie, and Harrow. He also got in early on Mychal Parker and Luke Cothron, both of whom have seen their stock skyrocket in the past several months.

By the same token I think Lowe deserves some credit for finding unheralded talent and turning them into solid contributors. He also found Gonzalez and turned him into a serviceable player. Julius Mays, who earned an unimpressive "82" recruiting grade from ESPN, will probably make a similar leap in his 2nd year. Tracy Smith was likely heading to the freaking SEC (LSU) until Lowe came calling, and he should make an All ACC team next year. CJ Williams, also a relative unknown was a huge contributor down the stretch last season.

And yet the "Lowe can't coach or develop players" argument persists...

This year he's bringing in Scott Wood, who's is in the running for "Sleeper of the Year" for 2009, Vandenberg, and an expected "program player" in Josh Davis. Honestly, I think Lowe (A) sees potential in all these guys, and (B) will do a damned good job getting every last drop of potential out of them.

Ah optimism... only took a couple months and a lot of drinking for it to return

I know this is the wrong thread but since you brought it up...

It's entirely possible to be a good coach and bad recruiter or a good recruiter and a bad coach. He's proven he can recruit players, not than he can coach them to any level of success, so one of those arguments has a reason to persist.

Anyway, sorry to go all OhBoyeee on the thread.

I've been very happy with Smith's development as well as the improvement Gonzalez showed over the year. Lowe has shown that he can develop talent, but he's only been here 3 years with only two real freshman classes. Williams' outside shot became pretty reliable at the end of the year, and he became a great asset defensively down the stretch too. Next year Williams will likely be a starter along with Smith and Gonzalez (unless Wall came).

Yeah, his players have shown improvement. I was commenting on Erios's confusion over why arguments persist over Sid's merits as a head coach. I don't think the decent strides made by Smith and Javi are quite enough to put a stop to any criticism (as Erios seems think should have happened).

I'm not bitching about Lowe, I'm just saying there's plenty of room to bitch about him. I don't really get where Erios was going with that comment, but I'm sure he's already begun his dissertation to explain it.

I don't think people should not be allowed to criticize, I just think it's a little stupid at this point. If I don't see improvement over the next couple of years then rest assured I'll be throwing out criticisms too. Right now though I'm just letting Sid do his thing and hoping that we can get the right type of players in here to elevate our program back to where we all want it to be and where it rightfully should be.

Lowe's successfully developed players not named Fells or Costner. The underclassmen gained valuable experience by getting more more PT down the stretch. Sid know's his X's and O's.

Therefore, Sid =/= bad coach.

There's your fucking dissertation, asshat

He'd be a good pickup. A lot of big time offers. Also it might allow us to redshirt Vandenberg, which would benefit both us and him. He'd be able to gain some muscle, especially in his lower body, and have a chance to adjust to the speed of the game/talent.

A big man rotation of Horner and Howell at the 4 and Smith and Painter at the 5 would be very serviceable for us.

If we land Painter we could call this class the 6-Pack.

i still feel like sid has 2 more years to prove himself.... This year we're gonna be weak in the front court. Smith will have to play really well. I think he can, but we NEED him to. Hopefully Brown can step in and contribute right away.

We need to turn the corner this year and show at least SOME improvement, and hopefully the year after that with Ryan Harrow coming in and hopefully another stellar class, we can make a push.

^^yeah that would be great but if we take Painter then we'd only be able to take one of those guys. I've stated this before but I'm afraid that the overwhelming pressure to have some success next year is really going to hurt the potential for an amazing '10 class.

Should have mentioned this, I was speaking in reference to the PackPride sports board comment by Gravis that we take both Wall and Painter if they both wanted to come, which can only happen if someone on the current roster isn't returning.
