"One of the state's all-time leading passers will walk-on at N.C. State in the fall.

Middle Creek's Garrett Leatham, who ended his career with the fifth-most career passing yards in N.C. High School Athletic Association history, said he was offered a preferred walk-on spot on the team and is already enrolled for the first summer semester. The record is unofficial until the NCHSAA approves the following numbers as submitted by the school.

Leatham threw for 9,488 yards in his three seasons on varsity, becoming only the third quarterback in state history to throw for more than 3,000 yards in three different seasons.

This season for the Mustangs, he threw for 3,385 yards and 24 touchdowns while being named second-team all-conference for the second time in his career. He was a first-team all-conference performer his junior year when he threw for 3,855 yards (15th most in NCHSAA history for a single season) and led his team to an outright conference championship.

In each of his three seasons as starter, Middle Creek won at least one playoff game, heading to the third round in 2010. The Mustangs set a school record for wins that year, going 12-2. Leatham's career win-loss record is 27-13.

"It's been a great three years at Middle Creek and I'm excited to get the opportunity to play the sport I love for a couple more years," Leatham said in a text Monday night.

Leatham's career highs are among the state's top all-time numbers as well, ranking in the top 15 in single-game passing yards (451), single-game passing completions (33) and single-game passing attempts (55). Most of his records are only topped in Wake County history by either Daniel Evans (3rd-most passing yards in state history) or Nick DeMuro (2nd-most completions in a single game).

Leatham was also a second-team all-conference performer for the Mustangs' conference championship boys basketball team.

N.C. State already has one Triangle-area quarterback signed on scholarship for next year: Harnett Central's Brian Taylor.

you didn't just say that in all seriousness, right?

[Edited on April 26, 2011 at 11:29 AM. Reason : also Evans was not recruited as a scholarship player]

[Edited on April 26, 2011 at 11:31 AM. Reason : also i wouldn't point out that period of our history as a time we had QB depth]

Sure I did. How do you know the guys behind Glennon are any good? Hence "options" vs "depth".

Granted it's not hard to be better than Evans or Beck. But still. They could be bums.

Fair enough then.

I'm still wondering about this walkon. Amazing numbers and good size, but couldn't get any scholarships?

I think I read somewhere he had Div II offers. Supposedly lacks arm strength and has a questionable delivery. (see photo above) And IBTPRivers.

I see where he's coming from. 'Depth' assumes that you have multiple experienced scholarship players available to play. He's saying that this season, we merely have options that we can turn to in case drastic things happen.

2011 QB's

Glennon - returning scholarship player
Brosius - returning scholarship player
Imhoff - returning walk-on converted to scholarship player
Taylor - true freshman scholarship player who will be red-shirting
Leatham - true freshman walk-on

Well I've been away in Florida for a week. Thankfully not a lot went on. In regards to Daniel Evans, he was a scholarship player every year he was here. Originally he was going to be a walk-on, but we found a scholarship for him.

leatham must have the worst arm ever if he supposedly doesn't have "tools" at 6'5 220

you really don't need THAT good of an arm to be a passable college qb so i think this is as good a walk on as you can get

i dont think the earlier depth comparison is all that apt

evans was a pretty accomplished qb in HS and had similar concerns about arm strength

and beck had previous experience from nebraska, right? not much, but about as much as glennon.

i mean, we def have "options" but "depth" usually implies competency. All of these guys may be competent, or even great, but right now we just dont know.

Leatham's release looks identical to PRiv's to me. It was difficult to tell on the video i saw but it looks like he threw a pretty long pass in one of those games.

I watched the kid play this year, and the game I watched he picked the team apart with a lot of very accurate, thrown hard, but short passes(like 5-10 yard slants, ins, swing passes etc.) and threw a few nice deep balls. He also made some athletic plays running the ball when it was there. He seemed very comfortable in the pocket, a lot of shotgun and he also seemed to have a winners type quality to him getting the sideline fired up as the game went on(it was a close game, he led a comeback).

I left impressed as far as local high school QB goes, and I don't know the whole story but there are sometimes more to why a player doesn't have offers. At the end of the day, costs us nothing, and I'm always excited to get ANY players at this point that want to be at our school regardless of stars, offers, etc.

^good stuff. I played Chris Leak in high-school, and he dismantled us with quick/short 5-10 yard stuff. Nothing long at all, just lots of little daggers.

Not saying this guy is Chris Leak, but getting an accurate, highly-productive QB to walk on is a great thing

Right now on scout, there are 4-5 stars and 20-4 stars with NC State on their list of schools. This seems to be a lot more than in previous years. Is this an indication that more athletes are interest in us? Or, is it an indication that TOB is trying a new recruiting strategy by sending out mass offers?

i know we just signed some kickers but this kid has a leg cannon
100 yard kick off
http://sports.espn.go.com/ncaa/recruiting/football/news/story?id=6559933

Bradley Pinion hits 100-yard kickoff
from Concord, NC.
Quote :
"FLOWERY BRANCH, Ga. -- Bradley Pinion has impressed the Kohl's kicking staff for years, but he did something during the Southern Showcase no one had ever seen before.

The 6-foot-6, 220-pound punter from Northwest Cabarrus HS in Concord, N.C., hit a kickoff that went 100 yards in the air with 4.4 seconds of hangtime.

His blast was such a freak of nature it literally stopped camp and had everyone, including the snappers, looking up and seeing a ball that was moving higher and faster than anything they had ever seen. "

Quote :
"After sitting back and analyzing the monumental blast, we feel a couple things were at work. First, you have to have an athlete with an explosive leg that can create a tremendous amount of force on the ball. Second, he has to hit a clean ball that has the proper rotation. Third, his blast must have caught a jet stream or wind current just at the right angle or at the right time because the ball almost looked as if it got a boost midway in flight."

"East Wake's Griswold to walk on at NC State

Taylor Griswold will be a member of the Wolfpack next season. The 6-foot-1, 290 pound offensive lineman from East Wake High School has accepted an invitation to walk on at NC State, according to East Wake coach John Poulnott.

Poulnott said Griswold will begin working out with the Pack this summer. Last season, East Wake compiled a 2-9 record, including a 2-5 mark in the Greater Neuse River 4-A Conference."

Taylor, Harrison are top athletes

Quote :
"Brian Taylor was an established high school standout two years ago after starting in football, basketball and baseball during his sophomore year at Harnett Central High near Angier.

Keni Harrison was a very fast girls soccer player at Clayton but wasn't well known outside her community.

Two years later, Taylor has emerged as one of the state's top high school athletes and Harrison has earned a national reputation by winning national high school track and field championships in the 100-meter hurdles and the 400 hurdles outdoors and the 60 hurdles indoors.

Taylor, an N.C. State football recruit, and Harrison, a Clemson track recruit, are The News & Observer's boys and girls high school athletes of the year.

They are a diverse duo. Taylor has been a varsity player for four years. Harrison's success has come primarily in the past two years.

Taylor plays multiple sports while Harrison has concentrated on track for the past two years.

The N&O selects high school athletes of the year in 23 sports and a male and female scholar-athlete of the year in addition to male and female athletes of the year."

WR Xavier Griffin is the new commit. Probably flew under the radar because of the fact that he's from Delaware, which is more famous for being the first state and having no sales tax, than it's football talent.

Newark HS
Newark, DE
Ht: 6-2
Wt: 185
40: 4.5

School Interested (known offers in italics)
North Carolina State
Elon
Norfolk State

Maryland
Penn State

Quote :
"As a junior, Griffin caught 30 passes for 645 yards and eight touchdowns."

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d6x5w5NNZ-Q

After watching his video he has good size, speed and elusiveablity (yeah I just made up that word), but I don't like the way he carries the ball once he has it. Now that can be something that can be fixed since it's just a technique issue. Now I don't know if he'll become the next Owen Spencer or not for us, but even if he doesn't he could become a decent DB for us as he was recruited by Coach Reed also.
