In theory, I’m in support of Trump’s decision to wind down our involvement in any proxy type wars like Syria.

But does anyone have a practical reader on what our withdrawal would potentially mean geopolitically and who stands to benefit the most? If this means we are just going to follow Bolton’s wet dream of a war with Iran that is obviously bad.

The problem with winding down proxy wars is twofold: one, we lose strategic positioning (consider the fact that Europe is a pretty pussified region) and two we completely pull the rug out from under any locals that have literally given everything to help is simply because they believe in our ideals and governmental system (our faults not withstanding). Thus expanding the ranks of our enemies.

These proxy wars piss every one off because every one thinks they accomplish nothing, make things worse and have nothing to do with US natsec.

The truth is, proxy wars typically keep us from fighting major wars, prevent nation's like Russia from ceding territory like Hitler did (Crimea is Obama's biggest failure and a lot of the fault lies with Bush), and relate directly to US natsec because without us Europe will allow itself to be overrun 10 times out of 10.

Without European security you have world war. It's as simple as that. And to do that we have to wage tactical battles in places like Syria.

That's my take. I'd cede any faults in my argument to duke or grumpy.

I think it’s clear fealty to Putin is a big motivating factor for trump in Syria and trump is just going to keep fighting Iran in other ways. I think trump thinks he can flip Putin on Iran too, and it’s likely trump is not aware of how close Russia and Iran really are.
