I can use netflix on my PS3 without being signed in to PSN.

I might check out those harry potter games, my wife loves harry potter but hasn't really gotten into a video game since NES Mario. I had the Lego Star Wars on Wii and that was fun. I'm still playing SSX though for now.

PS3 game updates have been nice and fast at nearly 1 MBps until the beginning of April. Now I try to play the Silent Hill HD collection and a 297 MB update is supposedly going to take 4 hours or more. And the number of minutes keeps increasing. I have searched online and looked at all sorts of message boards with no fix in sight. This seems to be happening to a lot of people regardless of their ISP or type of connection.

I have garden variety roadrunner (not the "Lite" version) and a wired connection and have not touched any settings at all. Anyone know of a solution?

I'm pretty excited about Metal Gear Rising. Platinum is probably my favorite developer these days. Raiden uppercuts a dude and slices him into pieces in the air. A mix between Ninja Gaiden and Vanquish sounds good to me.

My wife bought me PS3 today for my birthday. Haven't had a console since the PS1, so I guess she decided to let me feel like a kid again for my 30th. She picked up Heavy Rain and RE5 also, and I have a few PS2 games in the house from when my sister lived with us.

Popped in Heavy Rain first and couldn't believe how far games have come visually. I'm planning on picking up GranTurismo5 next because I know that's a series that I like, plus I need at least one multiplayer game in the house.

May I ask how she came to pick Heavy Rain? Seems like a strange choice. Hopefully she doesn't walk in on you during the shower scene like my gf did. No I wasn't jacking off.

She had my sister on the phone while in the store to assist with choices. Hearing the details of this phone call later and imagining her in GameStop was amusing.

S: "OK, what do you see?"
W: "Call of Duty."
S: "I don't think he's very good at first person shooters, so he's probably going to just be called a fag by little kids."
W: "Oh my. There's also Call of Duty Modern.."
S: "Get away from the Call of Duty games!"

Catherine seems like another strange choice for a casual gamer but your sister has good taste. I would recommend lowering the difficulty because that game is hard. I really liked the story about a guy struggling to commit after years of dating. I played it right before I popped the question.

I guess Catherine and Heavy Rain don't have the most complicated mechanics so in a way they would be good for someone who is rusty.

^i played the demo. the puzzles were really fun, but the storyline seemed like it would have corny/engrish dialogue.

I was enjoying Catherine, but the resolution of the story took a weird and disappointing turn. The translation and voice acting was very good IMO.

fuck.. YLOD on my PS3 last night. looked at some youtube videos and am wondering if i can really fix it myself. anybody got any experience? it powers up for about 2 seconds, beeps a few times and a real quick yellow then back to a flashing red.

it's probably at least 4 years old, would overheat sometimes because my roommate kept it nice and warm during the summer last year. but i've never cleaned it out or anything. it also has a Blu-Ray that i rented so i'd like to get it out before i pay more than a few $ for it.

I tried doing the hair dryer trick and no dice. Just had to send it and get it fixed. I think it was about $150.

Anyone out there play Dead Island? I got GOTY edition last week and honestly have been a bit disappointed in it.

maybe that's why my friend's connection kept crapping out. I signed out about 7pm last night.

I started getting some crazy tearing and shooting polygons on my screen, so i sent it to a local guy to fix it.

it's half the price as sending it back to sony, and the guy guarantees his work.

my Ps3 has been on the fritz lately with random crashing. today i got an overheating message and it died. Now that i think about it, i don't remember hearing the fans like i used to so maybe the fan died.

:/

Nope, i did the fan test and the fan sounds loud and strong

i guess just YLOD stuff

Ni No Kuni is getting a lot of buzz. I keep getting let down by the supposed next savior of the JRPG but this time it might be real. Dark Cloud 2 was a fantastic game. Thinking I'm picking that up instead of DmC.

My old 80GB PS2-compatible model just YLOD'd today. Does anyone know if there are local reballers in Raleigh or Charlotte area? I'm in Hickory and by the time I pay to ship it and get it reballed, it's going to be half the cost of a new one (with the possibility that the reballing doesn't fix it).

I'm leaning towards getting a new slim with a warranty and just using a heat gun to fix the old one enough to port over some saves. I'm about 30 hours hours into AC3 and I don't particularly want to replay all of it.
