I've been back in the US since xmas time. I'm still working on landing a job in Melbourne so maybe i'll go back. They're trying to approve headcount for me, but i think its unlikely in this economy. Until then im hanging around trying to find a job. I'm in DC now w/ my gf. 2/24/2009 11:17:04 PM |

^^^ I like it! might be a touch too much saturation, at least in the red end of things. 2/26/2009 10:16:48 PM |
JBaz All American 16764 Posts user info edit post |
It's a medium format, about 2-4 times the size of 35mm, it's a niche market mainly targeting commercial & high end portrait studio's (weddings included); the camera body alone costs 3k, lens is about another 3k and the back is probably 12k separate. Leaf does have upgraded digital backs, I think they have 38 and 50mp out this past year.
Amazing image quality. We have one leaf backs at school and it's a bitch and a half to get the damn thing to work properly. Plus the signal-to-noise ratio is ungodly low and the resolution is just tack sharp. The down side with such a large sensor (besides cost) is that they are generally behind the current trends and technology of what we see in the retail/consumer electronic market. The sensor on the 28mp is based on the same silicon tech that was available for Canon mkII's. They have a much longer product life and at those prices, I hope so. 2/27/2009 1:31:19 AM |

damn, it looks over saturated. Stupid Canon Raw program just sucks ass, it's really crippling me. I need to get cs4 or lr2. Ridiculous to spend so much money just for 5dmkII support. Thanks Adobe, that's why no one is fucking buying your upgraded pos software and everyone is sticking with cs3 and why you sales are off by a 50% margin. 2/27/2009 3:26:19 AM |

Short version: I tried to shoot a fashion show, get approval with management, get there and the "official" photograph has a beef towards me, says I can't shoot strobes, acts like a tool. I said good day, packed up my gear and left. I had no obligations on shooting the event, it was a personal project, but I knew everyone there.
Long version: wow, I had a fucking night. So get this, I was set on shooting a fashion show tonight at Solas. I talked to management prior to the event about setting up studio strobes to the ceiling and they gave me the OK. So when I got there this evening, I brought in 150lbs worth of camera gear to rig up. When I was setting up my strobes, the photographer for the event (of whom I know) comes up to me and asked what I was doing.
So I told him my idea on a 5 strobe setup with shooting two cameras and one on remote. He gets all bent out of shape about it and starts yelling at me that I couldn't do it in a pissy voice saying "I'm the official photographer, I'm the only one allowed to shoot this professionally and you can't shoot strobes here, specially those powerful ones. Those will mess up the HD video cameras." I shrugged my eyes and told him I had the OK with management then he says "management isn't running this show, I'll tell you now, NO STROBES".
Then I proceeded to tell him the fact that no matter what strobes you are shooting, it won't "mess up" video. He interrupts me and goes "hey, I donno, that's what the video guys said". I go meet the video guys and it happened to be my friends and I personally asked them about strobes; they said they didn't care. I went back to management and they also didn't care, as long as it was safely rigged. So I started to pull out a strobe, but then was like I better not, that douche is gonna be a total faggot. I tried setting up a remote camera to shoot ambient, but the lighting they had on the runway was just awful and he even comes up to me and yells "Is that a flash, you CANNOT be setting up flashes up there" as he points to my 5D on a magic arm...
At that point, I was on my last nerve and just was like "you know what, this isn't going to work. I'm going home, chow". packed up my gear and toted it four blocks to my car. I mean if it was on any other night, I would have given him an earful, but I just didn't feel like fighting. It's been a very long day. And it really sucks because I put a lot of effort, thought and planning into shooting this event to experiment on what I can do. I knew a lot of people performing and watching the event and I have never been so upset to walk out early and refuse to shoot. Their loss.
Btw, the "official" photographer sucks ass, probably as bad or worse than kiwi. He shot with a 20D 17-85 and a 430ex with an omni-bounce diffuser pointed straight at the subjects... 2/28/2009 2:56:46 AM |

The guy is like 34 years old and has been shooting for 10+ years. It's beyond me how he doesn't understand the basic fundamentals of photography or camera controls. His stuff is like lazydaze shit and I think he actually works for them. It's like, "give me a p&s, I could do better". Shit more than half of the pictures in the Raleigh downtowner is taken by a Sony pos, but they are decent for newsprint. 2/28/2009 3:24:17 AM |

Seriously, if he can't be nice and play ball with me, I will go to the mattresses with him and bury his ass. I will go out of my way to call him out. I've been way too nice to him in the past for his crappiness. I don't care if he's been shooting longer than me, he doesn't know shit. Every other photographer agrees with me. 2/28/2009 11:08:57 AM |

rode for about 30 mins, completely soaked, but I think I got some decent HD vids. The camera held up pretty well, but I actually originally had it mounted on the triple tree in front of my front fairing, right about at eye height when sitting on the bike. Then like 10 mins into riding, the clamp slips off the triple tree and falls off! I was like, OH SHIT, but I had the camera strap wrapped around my tank bag so It didnt go anywhere. Remounted it in the pics.
That was a lot of fun and def lifted my spirits. 2/28/2009 1:54:37 PM |
