I have a D50 I want a wide angle (by mid-june, at the latest)...going out west, + all the times around here I've wished for one
I'm looking at the tokina 11-16mm
Thoughts? 3/6/2009 7:33:14 PM |
pezking All American 3561 Posts user info edit post |
on a nikon the 11-16 is a no brainer, and even on a canon I'd choose it over the EF-S 10-22, but they are both really good ultra wides. 3/6/2009 8:14:16 PM |
ambrosia1231 eeeeeeeeeevil 76471 Posts user info edit post |
That seems to be the consensus
I'm just having a hard time with the price tag, and continuing my research, in hopes that somehow, I'll find an acceptable compromise on quality to make it more affordable
...but I'm not counting on it. 3/6/2009 8:17:51 PM |
Ronny All American 30652 Posts user info edit post |
You will not find a better lens for anything even close to the price of the 11-16. It outperforms the 10-22 in pretty much every category and is at least 100 bucks cheaper.
I've never been one for Tokina lenses, but if this glass had a dick, I would suck it.
Buy it, I promise you will not regret it. I'll even let you check out mine if you'd like to, since no one around here carries them. Southeastern and Peace never heard of the lens, maintaining their pompous "our customers usually only buy brand name lenses" attitude. 3/6/2009 8:29:51 PM |

B&H is on back order as well.
I've had a good Tamron and a good Tokina lens. Maybe the hit or miss ratio isn't as good as canon/nikon, but pick the right one and you get a lot for your money. 3/6/2009 8:38:50 PM |

there are/is/was supposedly a bad batch of the Tokina 11-16mms that were missing some spacers inside or something and t hey won't focus right. a shit ton of people on nikonians.org have had the problem, even on the 1st and 2nd replacements!
i want one too, but i might wait to make sure this batch sells out before i get one. 3/7/2009 11:52:06 AM |

Slightly OT, but I'm sure somebody here knows. I'm looking for the blog link to the guy who free climbs things around Raleigh and paints them and takes pictures. It was posted in another thread here a few months ago but I can't find it. Thanks. 3/7/2009 3:15:30 PM |

I was sorely tempted to take my camera out in the canoe today, and I'm very glad I didn't. The waves were very rough and we ended up with a lot of water in the canoe. 3/8/2009 8:31:43 PM |

During the road trip last summer, stuff started getting into my camera - I even posted about it in here, because it was driving me crazy. I cleaned all my lens and everything repeatedly, had the sensor cleaned, and continue pick/blow/wipe some stuff off the mirror myself.
I cannot stop my camera from getting dirty. I can't figure out what the hell I'm doing wrong.
Here's an example of what's in there now
A piece/speck of dust, and some kind of fiber, it looks like.
Sometimes this stuff stays there for weeks, and sometimes it's there for a few frames.
Suggestions?

yeah, i have the same issue. it just comes with switching lens outdoors, but I've not gotten to the point of annoyance where i would go through the hassle of cleaning the mirror or sensor. 3/9/2009 11:42:14 AM |

It's too big. Yes, that is the problem with that photo.
Honestly ambrosia, there doesn't seem to be a clear focal point. That works for some images, but not with this one I don't think. There really isn't a pattern to draw the eye either. I also think there should be more detail in the highlights.
It is just hard to make a photo like this stand out. I've got a similar shot and I feel the same way about it.
