I don't know for sure but it is pretty soon after his visit to MD...plus the news broke on the Maryland rivals page I think. Also wasn't Leslie a 5 star before? Maybe that was just on Scout.5/13/2009 3:33:14 PM |

Would you look at that! A player dropping in ranking after decommiting from State.
(Actually Leslie moved up six spots, although I thought he was 5-stars on both rivals and scouts.?) http://ncstate.rivals.com/content.asp?CID=945653
Rivals lists NC State as Leslie's only high interest.

I'm not really worried about the time; deep down you have to know what you think pretty soon after you leave. I'm more worried that maryland is reporting it. 5/13/2009 3:39:46 PM |

That's been a very encouraging sign. It debunked the myth that Lowe couldn't spot talent, which was a common criticism in the past, and it's paid off by securing commitments from top notch players.
But the positive buzz Lowe's generated on the recruiting trail could easily fizzle with another bad season. God I'm praying hard for a decent year in '09-'10...5/13/2009 6:23:41 PM |

A great way to close out the 6-PACK class.
Maybe someone could photoshop this pic and place all of their heads on top of the bottles and change it from Coca-Cola to NC State. The "Refreshing" part could be left since this class will certainly embody that.

t'll be interesting to see how this effects recruiting for the 2009 class...
Unless someone leaves early (Maybe Smith has a huge season and gets drafted... Johnny Thomas to a medical hardship... etc) we'll only have 1 additional scholarship to offer for 2010.
1 - Javi, Mays, Harrow 2 - Brown, Mays, Wood 3 - Williams, Thomas, Wood, Davis 4 - Howell, Painter 5 - Smith, Painter, JV
Probably means we take Cothron/Leslie (which ever one commits first), and if Thomas leaves we take Parker. 5/13/2009 8:39:54 PM |

Adding Painter bolsters Pack in many way
http://rivals.yahoo.com/ncaa/basketball/news?slug=rivals-295789&prov=rivals&type=story_recruiting
This was posted ~15 hours ago, but a few tweaks and it's still relevant:
Quote : | "Here are five areas where Painter would will [help] NC State and coach Sidney Lowe if when he selects the Wolfpack:" |
Much better, please continue
Quote : | "1. Protection against injuries
NC State returns 6-foot-9 senior combo forward Dennis Horner and 6-foot-8 sophomore center/power forward Tracy Smith, and signed 6-foot-8 power forward Richard Howell in November. More help was needed this spring, resulting in 7-foot, 230-pound Jordan Vandenberg of Australia, and the targeting of Painter.
Painter would will provide that added protection in case one of the big men go down with an injury, and allow players such as small forwards Johnny Thomas and Josh Davis the chance to remain at their natural positions and not have to help out at power forward.
2. Pressure alleviated for the future
A commitment from Painter takes the pressure off of NC State from landing multiple big men in the Class of 2010. Recruiting big men is never easy, and while NC State has some strong ties to 6-8 junior forwards Luke Cothron and C.J. Leslie, there’s no guarantee of the Wolfpack landing two inside players. Painter helps not only this upcoming season but the future.
The nucleus of Smith, Howell, Painter and Vandenberg (plus possibly another big man in 2010) could mature together and form a strong nucleus for the future. NC State is essentially killing two birds with one stone by helping the 2009-2010 team, but in a way, filling a need one year ahead of time in recruiting. He’s an unexpected [but freakin' awesome] bonus to an already stellar 2009 recruiting class.
3. Shot-blocking presence
Painter’s ability to block and alter shots might be his biggest early contribution on the court. He’s a great athlete with a big wing span at 6-9, and takes pride on the defensive end. He’s battled some of the top big men in the Class of 2009, and won’t be fazed by what he sees in the ACC. He could will provide that active big men presence similar to what Tony Woods provided last year for Wake Forest.
NC State other top shot-blockers might be its guards — 6-4 Lorenzo Brown and 6-5 C.J. Williams. Vandenberg could also be a presence inside, but Wolfpack fans won’t know much about him until practices get under way in October.
4. Provide competition
The best programs thrive when the starters know they can’t slack off or else the backups will pass them by. A potential The recent signing of Painter will add one more player to the mix who is coming in with the mindset of becoming a starter. Smith, Horner and Howell, also have that mindset for next fall. Smith is a lock to be a starter, but the other starting post spot is up for grabs.
Lowe will play the best player, whether it’s a senior like Horner or an incoming freshman. Horner and Smith would work well in the Wolfpack’s high-low sets, and Howell will help as a rebounder and with his face-up game, where he can drive to the rim or show off his passing skills. But don’t be mistaken, Painter will be coming to NC State hoping to start.
5. Provide flexibility
One Lowe and the coaching staff will know this one, but if they believe that playing a big lineup is the best approach, the Wolfpack now have enough numbers to pull it off next year. NC State turned to Smith, 6-8 forward Brandon Costner and 6-9 center Ben McCauley down the stretch last year. Horner helped provide depth by playing both forward spots last year.
NC State could conceivably play some sort of trio of big men with Horner lined up as the small forward. Smith, Painter, Howell and Vandenberg would handle the two power spots in the rotation." |

Hopefully the noobs can develop some serious chemistry. Definitely going to take a team effort to make something out of a young team. Lowe's guys seem to have better basketball instincts than what we are used to, so there's a chance of that chemistry developing. 5/13/2009 8:58:34 PM |

from packpride:
2009-2010 Projected NC State Basketball Roster
F Dennis Horner, Sr. G Farnold Degand, RS-Sr. F/C Tracy Smith, Jr. G Javier Gonzalez, Jr. F Johnny Thomas, RS-Soph. G Julius Mays, Soph. G/F C.J. Williams, Soph. G Lorenzo Brown, Fr. G/F Scott Wood, Fr. F Richard Howell, Fr. F Josh Davis, Fr. C Jordan Vandenberg, Fr. F Deshawn Painter, Fr.
The good thing about this is that we would potentially only lose Horner and Degand next year. So we could still be in the woods a little this coming season, and i fully expect us to, but year 5 of Lowe has all the makings of getting us back to respectability if not this coming season with a few breakout performances. 5/13/2009 9:18:23 PM |
