You're in denial. Gott's team choked. Gott's team wilted under pressure. Gotts team couldnt close the game out. I love Gott, but this one is on him.
I dont claim to know the answers, but for his sake, I hope it was because of our team's inexperience, the 20th most inexperienced in the nation.
When the going gets tough...
IBT he wasnt the one who missed the FTs yada yada...

Gott blew the 15 point lead
But the players got us the 15 point lead
Gott pretty much steps in when we have the lead and causes us to miss free throws

I think the only thing Gott can be blamed for is our team panicking when the going gets tough. That was a sustained collapse that didn't hinge on one bad play, that was a sustained mentality for like half an hour.
Then again, that is a proud NC State tradition that dates back to apparently the day after the 1983 championship.

I aint even mad about the FTs. If we'd done a half decent job NOT leaving them open for their 3s in the final mintue, we would have won it. 3/21/2014 12:09:02 AM |

I don't think Gott is a shitty coach, but I do think he's slightly overrated (well, maybe not that this point.....who knows). After watching his version of our teams for the past few years, it's clearly evident that our players have some skill and when they are doing great they look good as shit. However, it seems like the tendency to capitalize on this skill seems spotty at best, never really comes out when we need it the most, and most of all we have trouble maintaining it when it does come out. We also tend to have trouble with adaptation; this was clear as day in the game against St. Louis. We've lost so many important games under Gott by just one measly point. I don't really know the in's and out's of coaching, but it does seem like a maintenance and refinement would go a long way.
Still, you can't complain with 3 tournaments in 3 years although we fare worse each year. I'm sure NCSU will win a championship at some point, but I don't think it will be under Gott. 3/21/2014 4:13:33 AM |

I like Gott, but the same issues come up way too frequently to feel great about his long-term success here. Defense, lack of attention to detail late in games, consistently poor FT shooting, having issues with a press, etc. Overall he did a good job this season just to have us in the tournament, but the blown games this season all mirror each other to a point where its not a coincidence. 3/21/2014 6:49:15 AM |

1) Overall this season was a success despite the near misses. Much better than last year.
2) Having the best player in the country in with 4 fouls WHEN YOU ARE GOING TO FOUL, is inexcusable.
3) Other than that, I am pretty happy. Legs gave out and I'm sure that affected free throws, but they still should make them.
Reverse Jimmy V 31 years later payback I guess. 3/21/2014 8:59:10 AM |

Didn't he just steal the ball a minute before and convert an and-1?? I don't think taking him out is 100% the right thing to do. You just hope they don't give it to his guy and if they do, you hope one of the other players runs over to foul him.
I mean...they threw it cross court to his guy and no one came over to foul. You could tell he was waiting for help.3/21/2014 9:03:51 AM |

I don't want to think about last night anymore. So I'm not going to.
I'm somewhat encouraged for next season after the last few games. We've looked really good from a non-TJ standpoint going back to the Duke game. If we're being completely honest, TJ hasn't played up to TJ standards since he turned his ankle against Duke and we still had two enormous leads against tournament teams. Turner looked fantastic. Anya looks like he might actually make up for our atrocious defense down low (no comment on leaving 3 point shooters wide open). Freeman is going to be already a great player.
Encouraging signs for next year when 10 games ago I was dreading 2014-15. I'm still not sure what we're doing in the long term, especially with L'ville joining the conference and the possibility of Wake hiring someone like Howland, but I think we'll be ok next season. If you remember, I was optimistic about this year and that worked out pretty well until the last 3 minutes last night.

College basketball is dominated by teams who can shoot the 3. In that regard, this was an extremely limited team, probably more-so than any to make the tourney since before Herb. Gott gets a lot of credit for getting them this far. They crashed and burned hard yesterday but you had our superstar leader with a bum ankle and a bunch of kids with little big game experience up against a team of seniors. I'm sure the 5 games in the 7 days had something to do with it too, NBA teams don't even do that. They were just physically and emotionally drained at the end. I still thinks its great that all our returning players got this experience to build off for next year. 3/21/2014 9:28:40 AM |

Just curious, since we had to play-in on Tuesday, and some teams aren't even playing their first game until today, why wouldn't the NCAA schedule the play-in winners to play on Friday to give those guys another day of rest?
And yeah, I think they said St. Louis and maybe Mercer were the only teams in the tournament that had 5 starting seniors. 3/21/2014 9:31:31 AM |

As I understand it, If you're playing in, the point is for it to be harder for you. You don't get extra rest just like the 16 seeds don't start with 15 points. 3/21/2014 9:34:52 AM |

Coaching is not what I went to university for so I’m not going to act as a pundit, but I do know how to observe. Gottfried is an average coach BUT he is a good recruiter and motivator. He knows how to deal with people which can go a long way to building a program. It's not a coincidence that he has gave up the most wins in three seasons compared to any BB coach in recent history so it would be idiotic to fire him unless you bring in a coach that’s battle tested. However, the lost to St. Louis was on him. The reason this team choked is because they had NO idea how to deal with the full court press and end up game situations which is the coach's job. There are several times this year in which we had leads that we blew. I recall this happening with Missouri, UNC G, Pittsburgh, Syracuse I, Virginia Tech, and of course UNC. The only teams we managed to hold off were UNCG and VT because of their lack of talent and coaching. 3/21/2014 11:49:57 AM |
