i've never understood the whole stealing food phenomena... do people actually go to work with no lunch and plan to steal from someone else? Do they take it by mistake? do cleaning crews clean out the fridge every so often and throw out good food by mistake? vindictive coworkers?

I've definitely taken a soda from a coworker multiple times. BUT she had several in there and I replaced it. And I told her. And she likes me so she didn't care.

My end date keeps getting pushed back. They don't want to hire someone to replace me and I need the extra money, but I was looking forward to lazy days.

What's your application? One lab I worked in did something like 7 days, but it never sat that long anyway. But that lab wasn't doing testing for sterility or anything like that.

In my current work place, our water systems have strict time and temperature limits.

I wrote a total two lines of code today because I had four meetings, an impromptu candidate interview, a 15-minute review of said interview, and constant interruptions by the QA team, with each member asking the exact same "problems" and "bugs" as the other members, all of which have been answered and addressed an innumerable number of times before but they don't bother to write these down so they keep coming back and asking about them.

and my manager wants to know why I am behind schedule on an important project, after requesting that I make my schedule estimate based on "little to no interruptions for other projects".

An African American gentlemen that works somewhere in my office building always parks his Saab in the handicap space (technically he has a sticker). I've seen him egress his car and walk perfectly fine into the building. He's no even overweight (some overweight folks try use their heftiness as a medical excuse for a handicap space).

I'm confused, are you upset because he is black or because he drives a Saab?

I'm just kidding, I've read enough of your posts to know that you are upset because he is black.

grrr just because you're "working" from china for a month, doesn't meant you can't take meetings in the US.

Why does it matter that the guy is black? Couldn't you have just said that a man that drives a Saab is always parking in the handicapped spot?

he said African American though so you know he didn't point it out because he is racist

its important because he knows that by including that information, we can all acknowledge that he is parking there because he is a lazy black without him needing to say it explicitly.

i'm sure he got the saab with government assistance

we have our DI water contained and labelled and prepared seperately

but none of our testing has to do with sterility or microbial activity, we are a very basic lab... all the same I know that the regulations are there for a reason.... but I am doing 15 different things at the same time and I get held up by the water not being labeled whilst sitting in a beaker for 5 minutes

The most annoying thing ever, I reach for my stapler and it's GONE! I look around my desk and it's gone!!! WHERE IS MY STAPLER!!??!!

I feel like printing up a missing sign.

[Edited on December 9, 2013 at 4:11 PM. Reason : that stapler has been with me through 2 jobs and an internship... I want it back before I change job]

The speakerphone duo (top 2 management types in my section) keep talking to finance folks and the other managers and people completing projects about our work and who may be relocated around the area and who they definitely need here and the entire time this is going on my blood pressure is just rising and rising.

As background: I work for the government as an engineer and they were slammed when I was hired a little over a year ago, but now with the funding getting chopped repeatedly they're seemingly fighting to keep their employees and many of us may get laid off. There's a lot of people who have been eligible to retire for a good long time but who have refused any government buy-out of their position (with enhanced retirement) because it's easy to keep getting paid and collecting additional money towards your retirement. So yeah, stress is fun. Fun fun fun... God I hope I don't get laid off.

I hate open space/lab sharing layout. I think most academic labs are like this now to try and "foster" sharing of knowledge etc etc.

On our floor, we're probably the only well funded ( or other labs are being cheap as fuck, cus of the funding situation). So we get people from other labs asking for things. Things that are expensive.

So, I hate to be the resident bitch on the floor, because then, it just won't stop. We help our fellow neighbors when we can ( and for the fact that we may need something from them some day too). A few times is fine, we hope that until you're able to make a purchase order on it, or if you're using it for an experiment you don't do very often.

I said nicely, "I think if you're going to be using it often enough, you guys should order some. The problem is, everyone on this floor asks for antibodies, it's not just you guys, so it adds up. And we use them often enough too."

We should not be funding other people's lab!

I used to work with this one particularly weird guy. This place for some reason was infested with assholes that would steal peoples food from the fridge. Anyways. One day he comes back from the break room and is cussing up a storm because someone stole his lunch. I kind of felt bad for him but could not hold the laughter in. I wasn't laughing that his food got taken. I was laughing at how over the top mad he was. Needless to say that just made him madder.

I swear to god some people need to learn how to use reply and reply all. I really don't need to read every communication between a warehouse and some asshole in Virginia just because we're on the same distribution list on the initial email.

UGH.

Another teacher (social studies) uses my room during my planning period, and I sit in the storage room that i've turned into an office because there are no other open rooms in this building. Well that means I hear all of her lessons... well she was talking about the chinese moon landing over the weekend and I cringed when I heard her say "Well you know the United States canceled our space program and NASA" and then she went on to elaborate that the only space exploration that happens these days is privately funded for profit.

So, someone at work got tired of people being filthy animals and not flushing toilets. He responded by putting a sign in front of every urinal and in every stall that essentially said "be a freaking adult in the first world: flush the toilet," only in a much more politically correct way than that...

And someone then proceeded to smear his feces on one of those signs with his hand. Seriously. I hate working on a floor with a bunch of 3rd-world animals

Guy that used to have my job for like 7 years has completely forgot what he did in the year and a half I've been at my position. Always asking me to do things when he know's it's not protocol. If we're invoiced for something I either need a credit or the product, I can't just not receive something

So, I wrote about the woman who embellished her resume this summer. Fast forward to now...why the hell is my boss still keeping her around when he has asked us to "be careful" of the data she put out. I believe there is some gender sympathy going on here. Esp. in science, we want to give women a fair chance.

How many chances are we going to give this woman? He has already taken the steps to call HR and ask about the procedure for firing a J1 Visa or whatever. He travels a lot so he doesn't know half the shit she does. Some of us notice that when he is not around, she walks in late, doesn't do much work. She'll cram 2-3 weeks worth of work in 1 week when she knows there is a meeting coming up. When he is around she comes in early and gets pretty productive.

The work ethic is one thing, but she should just go base on the fact that with 2 advanced degrees, she cannot do her job.

Oh, she is Indian. I'm not saying that all Indian lie on their resumes. I do think in general though, foreign post doctorate candidates tend to embellish because getting a position here in the US is highly regarded, and there is more money and resources.

Second Day back to work and the school goes to hell. No Teaching Assistants for the Second Grade, second day in a row and it's freezing outside so of course inside recess with kids that have been sugared up over the Christmas Break. Oh and no heat in my classroom and I had several kids complaining that it's cold and admin didn't move us because it was so cold.

Had the QA lead come up to me and state that she wasn't getting an expected notification about an application not running, so she logged a critical defect for it. I walk over to her machine and it turns out she still has the application in question running. The lead QA tester doesn't know how to tell if the application she is testing is actually running, despite:

1) Task Manager
2) Me telling her and her team at least 5 times (each) over the past week that the application continues to run in the background when you close most windows.
3) Me telling her that the only way to kill the application is to go to the hosting container, right-click the app, and choose "Terminate Application", and her doing this very act on numerous occasions.
4) A monitoring application that you can use to directly connect to the application.

I rejected that defect in spectacular fashion, including a CCed response to both my and her manager.

Too harsh?

I'm sure that I've mentioned this before, but sending simple text-based info as an attachment (e.g. tomorrow's bell schedule). Just paste the text into the message, you're actually doing more work and adding an extra step between us and the info.

Drafting said attachment in Calibri instead of Times New Roman.
