If we lose the UNC game, we will be in a dogfight with UVa for the #4 spot in the ACC. UVa holds the tie breaker over us so we'll need to win out which is possible, but I see us dropping either the GT or FSU game.

UVa has the remaining games:

Home vs GT
Home vs Duke
@ BC
@ FSU
Home vs Umd

Assuming they lose to Duke and we lose to UNC and we both win out, they get #4. We could be rooting for UMd at the end of the season That game UVA @ BC game will likely have an o/u of 80 pts.

^ no, that's the opposite of how the luck component works.

The luck component explains whether your record is better/worse than it should be based on pythagorean win/loss prediction models. It's a great way to classify if a team is better/worse than their record.


We're not on the "bubble" right now but if we don't close out the season well we are still in danger of missing the tournament. It wouldn't take many losses given how easy our end of season schedule is and how tight the bubble is this year.

We did a really good job scheduling our OOC this year and we've been fortunate that the ACC has been down enough for us to pull out some tight wins. At this point we're definitely more likely to make the tournament than not, but we're one injury/suspension or fluke loss or two away from changing that.

That being said. I'm ready for this team to hit it's stride. We played well against FSU and I'm encouraged about this switch from Purvis to Warren. If we can get Warren going again, Zotestes ankle healed, Lewis to stop shooting, and Purvis to return to early season form we can hang with anyone offensively. You've just got to believe we can play defense like a top 60 team or so if we put our big boy boots on.

if scott Wood misses that three pointer against clemson then we are squarely on the bubble right now. That's how close we are.

My point was trying to illustrate that we were a significantly worse team than people were giving us credit for all season. We were ranked like #16 and people were talking about winning the ACC and I said guys we're not even a definite tourney team right now. This team has SERIOUS defensive issues. We are much closer to a bubble team than a great team.

And that remains true. But whatever I'm done. It's stretch run time. It's time for this team to come together like they did last year. I know this team CAN play defense. There's no reason they can't. Not great defense, just average defense. I'm excited about our new lineup and the fact that Lewis has become playable, because Purvis wasn't cutting it as a backup PG.

i'll go on record and say that i think we played ourselves squarely onto the bubble between @maryland and @duke. after that duke game we're 16-7 (5-5) with... a home win over duke. that includes a bad wake forest loss.

so these wins are nice, but us going to the tournament depends on not doing anything stupid for five straight games. that's a long time. thus, i think we're pretty close to the bubble right now, have been on the bubble basically all month, have a good chance of ending the season very much on the bubble and have a nontrivial chance of missing the tournament outright.

i'm willing to be wrong if that's actually wrong, but i think that's a pretty reasonable view of things, not too optimistic nor pessimistic.

the good news is that this team could totally win the acc tournament and just go on a tear. that's really all you can expect a basketball team to do, go on a tear at the end of the season, and this team is as capable as any team in the country and in a position where doing it means having a great season.

so, here's to hoping it's at least exciting and doesn't involve the NIT. overall, so far, this has been just a monumental disappointment as a preseason #6, and recalling how excited i was after our first two games, but maybe it'll end on a really fun note.

I think when most people talk about the bubble, they are talking about if the season ended today or extrapolating body of work to the rest of the season...not whether a team is in the tournament if they lose out. By your metric there must be 100 teams on the bubble right now.
