I haven't gotten the pay app yet, but I'm thinking about it. I'm using the lite version of one and it lets you listen to police/fire/ems for 6 or 7 different major metro areas. If I end up getting the full version I'll let you know.10/25/2009 8:46:33 AM |

i love my iphone, i do. but jesus christ i am getting sick of the futility that is AT&T's service during big events like football games. Yet another sunday at the Panther game that i try and log on to check the early game scores before kickoff. Nothing loads, everything times out. sportstap, yahoo fantasy app, the browser itself.
then i borrow my dad's verizon phone. 3 clicks and less than 2 minutes later and i'm completely up to date on all scores and my fantasy teams. It really is ridiculous.
there's a map for that! 10/25/2009 8:13:28 PM |

As has been said many many times now, if you turn off 3G you will usually be able to get through.
I'm not defending AT&T's shitty service in any way, but it is a workaround that's usually better than nothing. 10/25/2009 9:06:33 PM |

So is that commercial where Verizon compares the 3G coverage maps accurate?
I know they are two entirely different types of 3G, but it just seems like they embellished the maps a bit. 10/26/2009 10:02:31 AM |

if you've tried to take an iphone outside of a major metropolitan area, it's not really that inaccurate. hell, sometimes having an iphone in a busy wireless area is just like not having 3g at all. 10/26/2009 10:42:11 AM |

i would think that having the largest number of customers, and probably the largest supplier of blackberries, there are 50+MILLION blackberries (not all on VZW i realize), but i think VZW can hold their own.10/26/2009 11:07:31 AM |

probably, but you have to consider the amount of data that iphone users use. blackberry is more business-y and people don't play as many online games, track their hikes, and the million other things it does using the internet. 10/26/2009 11:43:05 AM |

Verizon has more towers. a LOT more. That's why they have better coverage and a larger network capacity. Mostly because of their merger and acquisition history, but as a result they have an enormous differential from AT&T in terms of network capacity and coverage.10/26/2009 1:17:59 PM |

pretty cool, except it costs $500 if you don't already have a viper system, and $30/year for service after the first year. 10/26/2009 1:24:42 PM |

^That's neat. Not worth that much $$$ though. I have a viper system, and it'll still cost $299 for the wireless module? Jeez. Although the only need for this is if you forgot to lock your car and are too far for the key fab to work. I don't see any other point. 10/26/2009 1:55:36 PM |

^only by early adopters. I don't see a lot of people jumping ship just to have to buy a new phone to be on a different carrier. Not at these prices at least. And I don't think its going to be as simple as swapping sim cards on your existing phone since Verizon isn't GSM.
If they release the same phone for both carriers i'll stick with AT&T since i'm already here and I have Uverse. If verizon gets a better phone then i might have to jump ship. 10/26/2009 2:33:00 PM |

What if, theoretically, another carrier offers a lower monthly rate for your bill and the same iPhone? Would you jump ship then?
Or do you like paying $150 to AT&T for the unlimited talk plan?
(Not directed at a specific person, just iPhone people in general)

^^^ Even if it's limited to early adopters jumping ship, that's still a lot of people for AT&T to lose. The last thing that AT&T wants to do is to lose any customers. But if you give people an alternative that lets them still use their iPhone domestically, and have better service, seems to me like you'd have a winner.

Quote : | "Verizon chief says offering the iPhone is Apple's call by Chris Ziegler posted Oct 26th 2009 at 2:52PM
Remember how in grade school, you usually made fun of the people you had crushes on? Verizon -- hot on the heels of some surgically strategic anti-iPhone marketing to promote its upcoming Android line -- is singing a very different tune in the corporate boardroom, with CEO Ivan Seidenberg (who has a storied reputation for running his mouth) saying during the company's earnings call today that the company "obviously would be interested at any point in the future that they would be interested in having us as a partner." He went on to say that the decision to bring the iPhone to Verizon is "exclusively in Apple's court," though we doubt that's entirely true -- Verizon has a reputation for putting manufacturers and devices through the wringer, and if any carrier in the world were to spike the iPhone for failing acceptance testing or throw its gargantuan weight and reputation around to put pressure on the contract, it'd be Big Red. Either way, though, it's an olive branch and a potential start to the near-constant cries of "if only the iPhone were on Verizon" that we've been hearing for the past two years; we're still having an awful hard time picturing a CDMA-equipped version ever happening, but with Verizon's LTE network progressively lighting up over the next few years, it might just be the perfect opportunity for these wayward souls to finally find common ground, especially with the tune AT&T's singing these days. I pay ~$99 for the 450 minutes, data + unlimited texts plan. I also have 2000+ roll over minutes and they keep expiring. Most everyone I know has an iPhone so are on the same carrier so I rarely use anytime minutes.
some months I'll send about 6000+ texts so most of my communication is done through that.
For me at least I'm better off on AT&T for several reasons. 1) I don't really have the problems people describe and I've had the same carrier for mobile service since it was called Bellsouth (with the exception of one short lived year that I had verizon) 2) I travel out of the country and any non-gsm provider will be completely useless outside of US borders. 3) I already have Uverse and everything bundled together. Unless its a better phone that isn't offered on AT&T I doubt I'll ever jump ship.
Also a lot of the early adopters probably won't jump ship right away. Since us early adopters tend to buy the phone as they come out (which is one a year) we're stuck in a forever extended '2 year contract'. If I wanted to jump ship and not pay an early termination fee I'm stuck not buying the latest and greatest phone for one generation which as an early adopter isn't going to happen either lol.10/26/2009 4:08:37 PM |

^^^^we would probably jump ship even it costs more at verizon. we're not in raleigh, we're in rocky mount. we get SHIT for just regular talking type coverage. of course there's no 3g here w/ at&t. i just ran speedtest and got 10 kb/s. i get almost no service in my house.
when i had verizon, my cell phone speed was faster than my home internet (1.5Mbps), so i just tethered.
there's absolutely no coverage in northampton county (where we have 3 projects right now), hardly any in e-city, and crap on the way to the beach.

So apparently deleting voicemails from your iPhone UI doesn't actually delete voicemails on AT&T's side. People have been telling me my voicemail box has been full for a while and when i called my voicemail (since none are showing up on my phone) there are tons of vm in the erased folder that haven't been deleted. WTF? I now have to go through one by one and delete them and I have no idea how many there are. they go way back. 10/27/2009 2:10:55 PM |

^ I am surprised they have not thought of that yet.
I am also surprised Verizon had the balls to take a shot like that at them, I guarantee if ATT were a CDMA provider they would not have done that. Its not like VZW has to negotiate roam agreements with ATT since the phones are not even compatible. You will not see them taking shots like that at Sprint, US Cellular, or any other CDMA carrier.
Sprint would be the worlds easiest target. Just show this....

aren't they all poisoned with Vcast garbage?
because the article I read about android on Verizon indicated they were locked down and you could only buy apps and what not through vcast at a premium. Because apparently verizon doesn't like the Apple App store that gives most of the money to developers and not the cell provider. *shrug*
