I have had the urge lately to play roller hockey. The only time I've ever played hockey of any sort was street hockey when I was a kid with cheap blades.

Other than protective ice hockey pants vs. thin nylon roller hockey pants, all the equipment other than skates is the same. Granted, you might get a little better quality at a lower price point with rollerblades than you might with real skates, but you can counteract that by going with a discontinued skate or something like that.

With that said, I'd buy cheaper shin guards and shoulder pads and use a wood stick before I skimped on skates.

It's hard to describe it as really thinking, but it's mostly a concerted effort to look around the screen while maintaining good glove and lower body position. If the puck's out at the point it becomes acceptable to lift your hands, stand up, and look around, provided your feet stay square to the puck.

A guy directly in front of you isn't as much trouble as someone about eight feet out, because then you get enough vision around him to know if a guy's winding up and then you just listen. Once you hear the shot, you get down, get wide, and seal up. Generally the shot will be low in an effort to get through, and if you're sealed well you'll get it. If there's a tip, it'll usually be aimed low and on-center (again, an easy save if you're sealed) or up in the corners where it's pretty impossible to stop unless you get lucky. Occasionally you'll get a glimpse of it about ten feet out and might be able to get a glove on it, but that's where those slow windmill flourishes come from...it's basically "Oh shit, look what I found!"

Alternatively, I just punch the guy repeatedly in the back of the head with my glove.
