I really have no clue who he means by "they." If a separate group does want another center, then why aren't they pushing for it? It is of no concern to the first group. And how the fuck is this even an argument against the center? It's not.

Its not being backwards, seriously alot of people are against it because they realize that separation is not going to help the problem. If we go around ad divide up the campus so that each group get's its own room or building then we are even more stupid than not giving anyone a building. People are so scared of being considered a rasict or anti-gay that they will not think logically. I know some gay people who believe that its a bad idea to have a center. So that must mean they are backwards and anti-gay too right??? most people wouldn't care if they built a building with private donations they just don't want it publicly funded. That is what I see as the main argument is if the building should be publicly funded or not. 12/9/2006 4:30:41 PM |

The gays aren’t walling themselves off there to be away from everyone. I know walls of an office serve as a metaphor for isolation, but being more bureaucratic in nature makes them have more in common with the rest of State, not less. Having an HQ to watch out for them, to help organize events, and to promote tolerance is a way of being more out in the community mixing it up… not less. Perhaps a better way to think of it rather than walling off is as a center, as the name suggests, since the center is where people come together.
This center makes us look to better to the public, whether all of our members like it or not, so I think it deserves our support. But we can’t offer it that, we can’t even manage to offer it the indifference that we readily give to most of the goings on at our university. When other colleges, prospective students, news media, and other organizations look at us, this gives us something to point to, and it gives us a group to hold accountable if the work towards tolerance isn’t being done.
So lets show our support
http://www.technicianonline.com/
And for the only poll being done lets add 1% more to the Yes slice of the pie so we can tell outsiders that on average, in a crowd of students in the brickyard, at random you're more likely than not to find an open minded person. 12/9/2006 5:30:59 PM |

The bgla club, the DLP (gay fraternity), and the annual DragFEST event in the fall (hosted by a music fraternity Mu Beta Psi)... add this center and we start to look like here at the most populated school in the state that we have a little bit of everyone. This center got us on local news, and I heard it on NPR. This thing can help make us look diverse and big and thus important. Public exposure isn’t cutting off part of the population, its putting them more out there on an issue of individual autonomy which people around here could support in that light.
This center could help make us look good instead of making us look like we are evenly split on whether we are okay with having people who are different than us around and we have a town hall type meeting that’s being reported as little more than pointless yelling rather than honest debate.
I vote pro ncsu in every online sports poll despite the fact I've only been to one sporting event and couldn't care less about sports.
http://www.technicianonline.com/
If everyone else could vote yes on this and make it about diversity, education, and debate at the largest school involving everyone, we can all raise the appearance of our school (if it becomes a themed way of thinking for more of our students, not just this issue). 12/9/2006 10:38:30 PM |

I can see the logic of the funding argument, but unless the entire system is changed, this seems pretty reasonable. Considering the evidence, it looks as if some students will use and benefit form this center. Reducing the suicide rate and making people feel less threatened is good thing. Maybe even worth spending some money on.

Some libertarians actually think that way. They argue that the market would provide education more efficiently.

Who cares it's an online poll, it means practically nothing. I've been told that Stafford and the other administrator at the meeting more or less said that the LGBT center is happening no matter what. There was an uproar at UNC when they decided to make a center, didn't stop it from happening.

I took classes and earned a degree and then applied to graduate school and was accepted. There is no such thing as a major in farming either. If you think agronomy or other science based majors are easy then why don't you try one. As for this topic i don't want my dollars going to this unless we are going to build a center for everyother organization on campus. How do we justify that the LGBT is the most needing of a center? Because a survey said so?? Well I can develop a survey and make it seem like NCSU is one of the most welcoming places to LBGT's Surveys are only as valid as the Validity and Reliable the survey is. 12/10/2006 2:57:54 PM |

The sound bite that was making it on the news the most comes from about 58 minutes into it, where the guy says stuff about how we may disagree, but for 4 years or 5 years here, we need to be open to all views since thats what education & a university is about. (the mp3 I posted a link to is about an hour and a half long) 12/10/2006 3:19:37 PM |

There is no right answer to this if you say your against it is because you are anit-gay if you say yes then you continue to have buildings build with student funds. I would like to know what purpose this center will serve the entire studetn population. If you are building a center for youth with student fees then there should be something in it for everyone. 12/10/2006 3:20:40 PM |

It's funded out of the Student Affairs department budget, which is a blend of tuition and fee money like most other departments on campus. IIRC (not 100% certain though) that it's particular budget comes out of the $177.70/yr Student Center Operations fee. 12/11/2006 11:37:49 AM |

I think there are plenty of departments that could use this money to help everyone get a better education. There are so many stopped projects halfway through the semester that would be good for all students if they had the funds to continue it. I think there are better ways for LGBT students to gather off their classmates dime and be just as happy. 12/11/2006 8:45:05 PM |

12 pages on the schools online forum, public forum meetings to discuss the issue inviting anyone to participate, discussion in the student senate, several technician articles, coverage on NPR & some other local news, hundreds of people joining facebook groups related to this issue, and majority of students being for it in the technicians online poll make me think that the students had some input.
His article came across to me as I wish I had more money, less gays, and more time to drink. I'm sure I'd have taken the textbook costs and tailgating issues more seriously if this matt walton guy wasn't straight up lying about people not having a chance for input ont he lgbt center. --- http://thewolfweb.com/message_topic.aspx?topic=458283

As can be seen by this thread I'm fairly interested in causes that help students. I think Walton saying things would be great at this university if only the causes I believe in were supported distances him from people. People who would otherwise readily jump onboard something more affordable textbooks for students who have the know how to speak to administrators, get vice chancellors to come out to events, and who are regularly involved with change on campus.
