The playoffs have been great this year (in the West as usual)
I can't wait for the Spurs/Jazz game...in my heart I will always pull for Duncan, but I really, really like the Jazz. I watched every game against the Warriors (since my beloved Mavs are picking their noses right now) and I love Boozer and AK47... I think this is going to be a better semi-finals than most are giving it credit for --- 5/19/2007 1:15:09 AM |

great game tonight in the west...spurs essentially played like the team with more playoff experience, but phoenix and nash especially made an interesting run at the end...im not a nash hater but as somebody who thinks his mvp talk is slightly overrated, i'll give him plenty of credit on his effort in the 4th quarter tonight, even though i was laughing as he argued fair calls
couple things on my mind:
- i didnt see the nets/cavs game, or all of van gundy's post game, but i saw the clip of him basically taking blame for the game 7 loss and that was respectable to me - also, regardless of the amare suspension and how dirty bowen has been his whole career and how intense the on court matchup was in the suns spurs series, it was good to see them congratulate each other on a great series afterwards (as well as the spurs fans giving the suns a big round of applause after the game)...you knew nash and everyone was heartbroken to lose the series but both teams showed a lot of class afterwards...another respectable thing about the nba that seems to get overshadowed by the thug image of the league...oh well, what are you gonna do
- the Spurs Suns series was easily the most interesting across the board of the 2nd round series...however I think the Cavs/Pistons series is going to swap the most interesting series back into the Eastern Conference for this "final 4" round of the playoffs...and the Jazz have played great basketball this playoffs...but i think the Detroit Cleveland is going to be the more fun of the conference final series 5/19/2007 2:05:07 AM |

yeah, utah san-antonio might be a good matchup, but for me, i hate both teams and could care less who wins.
i'm looking forward to cleveland vs. detroit, however. i've always hated the pistons, and who can't help but cheer for lebron? although i think the pistons stand the best chance vs. the spurs, who i hate even more than the pistons, so if a pistons win is what it takes to keep manu and bowen from winning another title, than i'm all for it. 5/19/2007 3:29:37 AM |

On the replay, you can see that Wallace wouldnt have gotten there soon enough if LeBron elevated.

I think Cleveland still has a decent shot to win this series.
-Varejao gave them fits again.
-Billups really can't get his game going against Cleveland.
-Webber is running on empty.
-Cleveland couldn't hit a shot to save their lives.
-Lebron didn't attack the basket (0 FTA)
-The game was in Detroit
-Detroit had more rest coming in
It just seems like Detroit had a lot of things going their way and still barely snuck out with a win.
I think the series will be 2-2 after the first four games and they'll play 2 or 3 hard fought games to decide the series. 5/21/2007 11:00:32 PM |

Lebron needs to make thing happen, rather than standing around the 3pt line, waiting for the ball to come his way, only to pass out of a double team. 5/21/2007 11:09:20 PM |
rallydurham Suspended 11317 Posts user info edit post |
the thing is Detroit "playing like that" isn't an anomaly.
Detroit plays below average basketball for 2-4 games every series. They used to be able to get away with it because their talent level was very high and when they had "focused" games they would always win.
They simply aren't as talented as they used to be and the Eastern conference competition has picked up the last two seasons.
Cleveland's defense was a big contributing factor to Detroit not shooting well. Detroit looked shoddy for all but Game 1, 2, & 7 of the Cleveland series last year.
If Rasheed Wallace hadn't hit an accidental bank shot with ~90 seconds remaining in Game 6 last season Cleveland would have most likely won the series. 5/21/2007 11:10:48 PM |
Panthro All American 7333 Posts user info edit post |
^^^, ^see, I almost completely disagree. But just about all of the reasons you gave are reasons why Cleveland should have won this game.
Yes, Varejao gave them fits. He is an energy player that continues to hustle night in, night out.
Billups played terrible...for the first 43 minutes of the game.
Weber sucked, but thats what they expect. 1 good half from him and the Pistons are satisfied. Maxiell actually fits the mold for what the pistons will need in this series, and can give the the energy to offset Varejao.
Lebron cant and wont be able to get layups in this series. Cleveland wont be able to hit shots like they did last series. they were 1-10 from the three point line and shot 37% as a whole. That wasnt all "bad shooting", that was some awesome team defense from detroit. They had 10 blocks tonight. Thats big time.
Despite how poorly Detroit's offensive execution was, the Cavs were in the game and had a chance to win. They blew a fantastic opprtunity to get an early lead in this series.
The next few games will not be as close.

^^ Your analysis is just off man.
I think you missed the series last year.
Cleveland didn't hit shots, Lebron didn't attack the basket, the game was at Detroit....
The Pistons didn't play poorly. They just aren't a high scoring team and they are playing against a stellar defensive team.
I feel better about Cleveland's chances to win the series after seeing the game tonight. It's clear that Detroit doesn't have a sizeable advantage other than experience and homecourt advantage.
That leads me to believe Detroit will win the series in 7 games rather than 6. But I think Cleveland has a legit shot to win in 6 games if they hit occasional open shots. 5/21/2007 11:22:13 PM |

yeah, it seems like most teams have lost the knowledge that if you have 35 or more seconds to go, and you're down, that you should probably try for 2 quick possessions. 5/21/2007 11:41:31 PM |
rallydurham Suspended 11317 Posts user info edit post |
They dont go for the 2 for 1 because professional basketball coaches are no longer great strategists.
In all honesty most professional basketball coaches don't understand STRATEGY.
They are more like role models, coddlers, babysitters.
Paul Silas is one of the worst coaches that the NBA has ever seen yet his name still surfaces in coaching searches because he's a "player's coach".
In other words, players think he's "cool" and won't tune him out completely because he's one of the guys.
Not going for the 2 for 1 is one of the stupidest things you can possibly do in the NBA. Professional basketball players can shoot the fucking basketball.
Think about it, would you rather have two 45% shots or one 60% shot?
Obviously you'd rather have the two (i realize sports talk isn't exactly the mathletes so i thought id answer my own rhetorical question).
However, most coaches just fail to understand this SIMPLE logic.
Hell, Chuck Amato couldn't figure out that you're better off going for a touchdown when you're down 7 points late in the 4th quarter and there were literally droves of people on this message board supporting his decision to kick the field goal. (VT game 2 years ago)
Plain and simple, statistics & logic have been replaced in the coaching realm by "feel" and "stupid ass decisions"

D'Antoni is a great coach. He gets his players to play under control at breakneck speed. Sure, it helps having a great PG like Nash, a great center like Stoudamire, and some heady role players but you can't discredit how disciplined they are.
Don Nelson is NOT a great coach. The Mavs IMPROVED when he left and the Warriors likely will too. His fast tempo, breakneck, out of control philosophy can get a team hot for a few games but it fizzles out once poor shot selection and poor defense outweigh streaky shooting.
Popovich is the best coach in the league right now. Sure, Tim Duncan is easy to coach... but he taught Tony Parker how to become an elite PG virtually overnight. Parker is actually pretty limited... he's not a great passer and he's a terrible shooter outside of ~18 feet but he managed to become a 20 ppg distributor.
He's also figured out how to run offensive sets that allow for enough spacing/distribution to let Duncan get his numbers while the supporting cast gets theirs too. 5/21/2007 11:57:35 PM |
