Why don’t they just ask the pilot that survived what happened? I keep seeing this being reported as “we don’t know what happened” but uh…seems easy to find out.

Maybe the pilot was busy I don't know, flying the fucking plane? This isn't a Cessna 152, it was a jump plane with a pretty decent sized fuselage and depending on the setup of the aircraft, possibly some partitions between the cockpit and the jump bay.

For my part it seems like the co-pilot was doing some flight training on the Casa 212 with the pilot. It sounds like they hit hard on a touch and go flight at Raeford. Whatever happened caused the gear on the co-pilots side of the plane to detach. The Aviocar has fixed landing gear so there is no green or red light to indicate all is well. After they determined there was an issue with the aircraft the pilot flew the plane while the co-pilot decided to try and see what happened. The 212 has doors on either side both front and back, as well as the jump ramp. Young guy probably stuck his head out of one of these to try and look down the fuselage and was unprepared for the sheer force of the wind. If he didn't strap himself to a tether beforehand (which if he was new to the aircraft he may have not been familiar with this safety procedure) then he could have slipped out with nothing to anchor him to the plane. If I was the pilot I would hate to blast this kid publicly before talking to his family and telling them that he made a mistake while trying to do the right thing and it likely cost him his life. Also if the pilot is focusing on flying and looks back and the other person is no longer in the plane he may have no idea whether the guy jumped out or just slipped, got sucked out, etc. Seems like a sad situation, but not a major conspiracy theory to me.
