The refs definitely blew. A ton of missed/wrong calls. The biggest was when Javi got clotheslined. One non-call that I was fuming at was toward the end where Ben couldn't handle the entry pass and it was going out of bounds. Well he hustled over to try and save the ball, but Singler bumped him resulting in Ben falling to the floor with a big thud. No call. Out of bounds, Duke ball.      3/1/2008 10:34:30 PM |

Actually I just saw the replay again and it wasn't Singler that bumped McCauley, it was Thomas. I guess I got so used to seeing McCauley match up with Singler. 3/1/2008 11:14:11 PM |

i'm not sure if you guys could tell at the game, but on the bad mccauley call, the whistle blew before nelson's hook. it was barely a bump if anything at all, but it was clearly before nelson's blatent hook. i watched it three times on tv and listened for the whistle to make sure it was a fair assessment. 3/1/2008 11:17:19 PM |

And all that I would ask Lowe in the future is for him to tell his team to never forget that ratface got his 800th win against us. NEVER EVER FORGET could be the addendum to never ever give up.

McCauley played good D in that sequence and Nelson was dribbling into no-man's land. Had the foul not been called his momentum would have taken him out of bounds. State still has the lead. Also did Nelson travel on that play?
Then you have Sidney motioning for a timeout once we got it across halfcourt and the ref going by him and not giving it to him. Sid even said that he looked right at him. Someone on PP rewatched the sequence and said we would have had around 2.5 seconds left on the clock, give or take a tenth of a second, had the ref given us the timeout. Typical Duke shit. 3/1/2008 11:34:24 PM |

Doesn't matter. Nelson lowered his shoulder to initiate the contact, which is a foul on him if they call anything, then he hooked ben who was in great position with his hands straight in the air, and traveled. Yes, IF it was a foul it was a correct call, but you dont call fouls on the defense when the offensive player lowers his shoulder. Just ask anyone on our fucking team. 3/1/2008 11:58:14 PM |

Quote : "Coach K Gets 800th Win in Comeback Against NC State While Wife Yells at Officials
Duke will probably be playing the first weekend on the NCAA tournament in Raleigh's RBC Center. Good thing that the NC State Wolfpack won't be there. Duke needed a wild comeback to beat the lowly Pack, 87-86, and keep pace for with North Carolina atop the ACC standings.
The win gave Blue Devils coach Mike Krzyzewski his 800th career victory. 727 of those wins have come at Duke, where he has won three national championships, 11 ACC regular season titles and been to ten Final Fours.
In this game, Duke did what they always do to pull this one out: get after it on defense, gun threes (they shot 28 of them and 29 from inside the arc) and got to the foul line (37 times). They also got an assist from Coach K's wife who yelled at the officials that they sent the wrong NC State player to the free throw line (the officials met and changed the call). Ah, the couple who berates officials together, stays together.
NC State had a 70-57 lead seven minutes into the second half but lost focus defensively. Jon Scheyer hit a three to start the comeback. Greg Paulus hit one. Then DeMarcus Nelson. Then Paulus hit another one. Then Nelson. Then Paulus. In all, Duke hit 13-of-28 from deep.
For the Wolfpack, this loss has to hurt. State had lost six games in a row and been accused of mailing it in of late. They had led for most of this game and seemed to have control late. Give credit to them for bringing it this afternoon as their coach, Sidney Lowe, has been dealing with his mother being in the hospital after suffering a heart attack.
It was also senior day in Raleigh, where Gavin Grant was honored in what was probably his final game at home.
Still, State is now 4-11 (two more losses than anyone else in the conference) and has a week off the stew about this before a showdown at Wake Forest."" |

After watching the last 8 min. of this game again several times (by the holy power of DVR, may it reign), I have concluded this:
1. NC State shit(typical) 2. Refs with blue boxers (typical) 3. Paulus had testicles in his mouth (typical)
I still think there was unspoken retribution for the foul on Thomas. Remember, Paulus got his eye dotted in the first few minutes, and a big deal was made about it. The HD cameras ZOOMED in on his WOUND, announcers saying "what a tough guy". Please. Make it through a tunnel at 7:58AM with your bag and shoes intact...we'll talk about what a tough guy. The refs probably weren't used to seeing the Dookmallows (aka "the softest motherfuckers ever") get banged around.
Additionally, if I'm moving my elbow through a space, it's a good idea that your face not be there. Just a thought. 3/2/2008 1:23:12 AM |

he has always wanted to be a boxer like his dad
I feel bad for McCauley, he's probably taking this loss personally even though he played nothing but good defense in that last 'foul' on Nelson, and apparently Sidney was asking for a timeout the refs didn't give thus forcing him to take that last shot way out of his ability

Yeah, you can see Lowe with his hands in the air begging for a timeout when the ball crosses midcourt. We wouldn't of had much time to work with, but damn the refs shafted us. 3/2/2008 10:26:21 AM |

Calling a timeout wouldn't have mattered at that point. Shit...we should have called a fucking timeout after we turned the ball over with 40 seconds left and maybe the geniuses on our bench would have realized that we should have fouled instead of letting the clock run down. 3/2/2008 12:14:02 PM |

so fouling paulus or nelson at the end and giving them 2 free points (because they are both excellent at the line) was better than forcing them to take a bad shot and leaving us with a few seconds left to win the game? 3/2/2008 10:15:33 PM |
skokiaan All American 26447 Posts user info edit post |
Yes, because we get time to call a time out and setup a play for 3 points. That's better than not getting a timeout and having mccauley shoot a halfcourt shot. We could have put fells, fergie, and costner ( .) in as 3 point shooters. We could even have tried for a quick two and maybe +1 with hickson.
We simply didn't have the time/guard play to get it up there, and duke played defense well. Lowe forgot how he won a championship -- extend the game to give yourself the most chances to win.
Big ben halfcourt shot << set play for 3
Too bad Ben couldn't make that FT.

yeah I think even a timeout with 1 second on the clock would have been better than what we got. All it would have taken is a defensive breakdown and we get a close 3 or even a 2 pointer if we inbound at half court. Plus, we had another timeout if we didnt see something the first time. Sidney was trying to make the right call. I think someone said we would have had 2 seconds but I disagree. I think we crossed with 1.9, say we get it with 1 second on the clock, thats still better than nothing IMO.
with .6 you can catch and shoot by the rules. 3/2/2008 11:08:14 PM |

Nelson at one point this season missed like 10 in a row. I know he made all he shot against us this game but he is at 58% for the year. You had to foul. Then you had options, go for a quick two and foul again or go for a 3. The way we went only had one solution....a heave at the buzzer.3/3/2008 1:50:38 AM |

You don't foul because you don't want to play overtime when you have REALLY BAD foul trouble and the refs will continue to screw you on every call they can. 3/3/2008 6:46:55 PM |
