How about being an actual RPG with actual dialog? Or having a good story with good voice acting?
Oblivion was cool for the modding aspect but as an RPG it sucked. 11/29/2009 3:57:39 PM |

Voice acting schmoise acting. Everyone talks about how they reused the same 7 voices in Oblivion, but it never bothered me. And I've noticed more than a few room fulls of guards in DAO that not only have the same voice, but the same 2 lines, so this game isn't immune to that either. The story in Oblivion wasn't bad. Maybe the main story wasn't as good as the one in DAO, but it was decent and the side missions were a lot better and WAAAAAAY more involving. Hell, each one of the sets of guild missions in Oblivion were longer than the entirety of DAO.
And I never modded Oblivion, so I can't speak on that, but unmodded, it was still 3-4 times more entertaining than DAO. 11/29/2009 5:18:00 PM |

Different strokes I guess, but I don't think Oblivion was as good as any Bioware RPG, especially DA which is their best in a while. Only the Dark Brotherhood line can compare with DA's story, and that was only 4 hours or so. Fallout 3 was superior to Oblivion also.
Dragon Age is definitley not a "Loot" game, so if you're looking for that I can see how you would be disappointed.

what's better, dragon age or demon's souls? 11/29/2009 6:52:32 PM |
BJCaudill21 Not an alcoholic 8015 Posts user info edit post |
i have both.. demon's souls is rediculously hard. but i like the combat better. you are actually in control of your attacks instead of hitting X and letting him attack for you. DA is more like a movie that you just kinda play along to, and there are very hard areas, but nothing you won't get through. I'd say DA because I pretty much stopped playing Demon's Souls once I got the other one in, and haven't started back yet. They're both pretty solid though 11/29/2009 6:55:33 PM |

I guess I've got one more complaint about locked chests...
It would be nice if I could just unlock the things with my main character just by having a rogue in my party. Kind of annoying having to switch back and forth between characters just to take care of utility tasks. 11/29/2009 10:27:53 PM |

Been hearing all the same complaints: lock-picking sucks, no storage, this or that class is weak, I want better gear, etc etc.
Just so you know, there is a mod for that

Just played a mage for 2.5 hours. I definitely didn't want to help Jowen and his bitch but did to escape. It was definitely worth it to see him pull off that bloodmage move though. Are the arcane blasts and AOE fire blast you start out with the best moves for damage? I'm not a big fan of moves that waste mana increasing attack or defense but if they are the best I'll use them. I am level 3 and got the move that steals health from enemies and upgraded it once to the move that takes health from dead enemies. Any suggestion for spells to acquire as I level more? I'll probably get some spells to heal others since you work in a team but that's all I've seen other than lightning that I like but that damages teammates. 11/30/2009 10:38:05 PM |

^^ supposedly the "cone of cold" or whatever.. 3rd on the ice thing, is a real good one to freeze people so your warriors can get good hits in. also, theres one down near the bottom that doesn't let people heal themselves.. could come in handy against stronger opponents 11/30/2009 11:11:21 PM |

So I made it all the way to the final battle on Hard, and deleted my character and started over as a blood mage. That way playing it through again on Hard as a mage, will still have the suspense of the ending. I'm so addicted, lol. 12/1/2009 12:09:09 AM |
Flying Tiger All American 2341 Posts user info edit post |
^^Cone of cold is fucking awesome, and it has a pretty fast recharge time. One of my favorite things to do is freeze a stack of enemies and shatter the lower level people with the stone fist spell (3 mages = boom). I spec'ed my character as a damage dealer: I've got the full fire and cold tree and half of the nature damage one (for the fist and armor buff). I've also got the full telekinetic tree (for the weapons buff and the prison spell). One of my favorite things to do is fireball + prison on highest ranking enemy + inferno, and cone of cold for anybody who charges me.
I made Morrigan an arcane warrior, a choice I would have taken for myself if I didn't like being an AoE badass. Her resists are maxed and she takes hardly any physical damage, though she can't cast for shit anymore.
Wynne is only healing and buffs, and backup artillery.
One great tactic is to get Alistair (or whoever you have tanking) to aggro all the enemies in a room, put a force field around him, and then just lay on the AoE spells while he can't get hurt by anything. 12/1/2009 12:18:25 AM |
AndyMac All American 31922 Posts user info edit post |
Yeah the telekenetic tree is a good one. The first spell in the tree (mind blast or something?) is great crowd control if you're getting attacked. Force Field is great to put on the most powerful enemy in a group (but you have to make sure the rest of the party doesn't keep attacking it) so you can deal with the rest of the bad guys while the boss is frozen. And crushing prison is just awesome all the way around.
Also, IMO the top tier elemental spells aren't worth taking. Sure they are powerful, but the charge up time is huge, and the AoE is so big it's almost certain to hit your own party as well.
Misdirection Hex and Death Hex are also great. 12/1/2009 11:27:08 AM |
Flying Tiger All American 2341 Posts user info edit post |
I use AoE spells mostly through walls because Alistair can sense all enemies everywhere. 12/1/2009 5:44:03 PM |
RedGuard All American 5596 Posts user info edit post |
I took Wynne up to petrify (didn't know any better early on). It proved to be a pretty useful spell. For any enemy without a colored name, you pretty much could kill them with a petrify+stone fist combo. Even some of the colored names you could kill them towards the end. Worst case, it buys you some time by freezing particularly annoying enemies for a period.
In hindsight though, I probably should have picked a different tree of spells to go up. 12/1/2009 11:29:27 PM |

WoW's artwork aged very well. So much so that it still looks modern.
This games artwork won't age well and really nothing that aims for realism and gritty environments does.
That being said, pretty colors doesn't work when you're battling a fucking horde of demons 12/4/2009 2:24:09 PM |

You can't have both mages and templars
The templars only come if the mages are all dead
You can also get werewolves, but only if you sacrifice the elves. I don't know what the 5th slot is for.

Shoot I used all of them. The Elves were useful because they just stood back and plinked the bad guys with their bows, and didn't get in your way. The mages were the worst because they cast fireballs constantly that would knock you on your ass when you were trying to stab somebody.

Is storm(the huge AoE lightning spell) any good? I just got it and it seems like the area is so huge that I'm hurting just about my whole party with it. Also, anybody know a good way of using walking bomb without hurting my allies? 12/30/2009 12:56:00 AM |
Flying Tiger All American 2341 Posts user info edit post |
I don't remember exactly, but I think lightning storm is a pre-requisite to chain lighting, which is really useful because it doesn't hurt your party members (it could be the other way around, though). I only used lightning storm in conjunction with inferno, to damage large groups of enemies before they could really see me. Inferno is much better in my mind because of the continuous fire damage. 12/30/2009 1:12:41 AM |
