Russell getting more national attention
Quote :
"18. The list of young quarterbacks who will be fun to watch this fall starts with Baylor sophomore Robert Griffin III. He hasn't led the Bears to the brink of relevance single-handedly. It only feels that way. Also on that list: Boise State sophomore Kellen Moore, North Carolina State sophomore Russell Wilson, Arkansas sophomore (and Michigan transfer) Ryan Mallett and Washington junior Jake Locker. Yes, a junior, but Locker missed so much of last season with a broken thumb that he still seems new. "

It still takes me a couple seconds to realize this is a statement describing NC State.

Spencer is really a 2nd wr and should be 3rd in yards on our team. Bowen wouldve been a top nation wr level by now. where is he? graham in the slot with bowen and spencer outside would be deadly on the yac side. Then we still have jarvis williams, don't we?

We would be a true conteder if we had bowen, graham and irving.

"South Carolina at North Carolina State Matchups
QB RB WR OL DL LB DB ST Coach Overall
<<all ncsu except LB>>

South Carolina offense vs. N.C. State defense
QB Stephen Garcia can make defenses pay with his feet when they don't keep him in the pocket, but at the same time he is a sophomore who doesn't always make the best decisions, and pressure only exacerbates the problem. That's bad news for South Carolina, considering N.C. State sacked Gamecocks QB Tommy Beecher five times last year and forced three picks in the first half -- four total -- before Beecher left with a head injury in the fourth quarter. Arkansas was the only SEC team to surrender more sacks than South Carolina last year, and there's reason to believe the Gamecocks' pass protection will struggle in this contest as well. Wolfpack DE Willie Young headlines a front four that makes up for its lack of elite size with quickness and athletic ability.

Though the Gamecocks beat the Wolfpack 34-0 last year despite their problems in pass protection, it's important to remember that their commitment to the ground game played a big role in the win. The departure of RB Mike Davis has created a void that South Carolina hopes to fill with 224-pound Brian Maddox and true freshman Jarvis Giles. Maddox is the thunder to Giles' lightning, but poor offensive line play is a concern in this area as well because both are relatively inexperienced. Backs with little playing time under their belts generally take extra time to mesh with their blockers and learn when to lower their shoulder and take what they can, as opposed to simply bouncing the run or cutting back against the grain.

It's critical that Young and the rest of the defensive line step up because N.C. State lost its best defensive player to season-ending injuries in June. WLB Nate Irving, who led the team in interceptions with four last year, suffered a broken leg and punctured a lung in a car accident, and while Dwayne Maddox is expected to replace him and did an adequate job of filling in when Irving missed time last year, Irving will be missed. His superior range and instincts would have made it tougher for Garcia to throw and for all South Carolina ball carriers, including Garcia, to get outside.

For a look at how the N.C. State offense and South Carolina defense match up, as well as the top individual matchup in this game and Scouts Inc.'s pick to win, become an ESPN Insider.

N.C. State offense vs. South Carolina defense
The biggest difference between last season's game and this year's has to be the emergence of QB Russell Wilson, who left the 2008 game with a concussion but went on to throw 17 touchdowns compared to just one interception over the course of the year. Though he lacks ideal height and is a streaky passer, Wilson is an effective game-manager who can extend drives with his feet and his arm. However, the Wolfpack have also had problems keeping their quarterback upright, and their front five appears to be overmatched against the Gamecocks' front four again this season. N.C. State is in a better position to handle the pressure, though, because Wilson shows above-average poise for a player with his experience, and RB Jamelle Eugene, who missed last year's South Carolina game with an ankle injury, is an effective receiver out of the backfield who should provide Wilson with a safety valve in the passing game. Also, 6-foot-5, 270-pound TE George Bryan should give Wilson a big, reliable target underneath.

Eugene got plenty of carries in relief of Andre Brown last year, and Eugene's ability to carry the bulk of the load should soften the blow of losing Brown to the NFL. However, he isn't as effective as Brown on inside runs, and that will negate some of South Carolina's vulnerability between the tackles. The Gamecocks will be without DT Ladi Ajiboye, who will miss the first three games of the season while serving a suspension, and MLB Rodney Paulk is undersized at just 216 pounds. Keep an eye on 225-pound backup RB Toney Baker, who missed the past two seasons with knee injuries but has the size and power to grind out tough yards inside. Finally, look for the Wolfpack to frequently run away from South Carolina WLB Eric Norwood when they do attack the perimeter. The 252-pound Norwood is big enough to set the edge, flashes the ability to shed blocks quickly and generally wraps up in the open field.

Special Teams
Key individual matchup
South Carolina ROT Hutch Eckerson vs. N.C. State DE Willie Young

The 290-pound Eckerson outweighs Young by 50 pounds and moves fairly well for his size, but he's going to have a tough time keeping Young at bay. Young does an excellent job of masking his lack of ideal size with a quick first step, excellent leverage and upper-body strength. Look for him to beat Eckerson to the point of attack, lock out his arms and set the edge when South Carolina runs at him. Eckerson's ability to keep Young off the passer when the Gamecocks throw the ball is of even greater concern. Young is an effective speed-to-power rusher, which means he uses his initial burst to get tackles back on their heels and then uses his hands to knock them off-balance.
With an inconsistent quarterback under center and questions surrounding the run game, it's important that South Carolina turn field goal attempts into points, but there are concerns about its ability to do so. Spencer Lanning sits atop the preseason depth chart at place-kicker and punter. The redshirt junior hasn't attempted a field goal since high school, and we don't know whether pulling double duty will affect his punting and/or place-kicking. Further complicating matters, redshirt freshman Adam Yates is listed as Lanning's backup.

Scouts' Edge
Garcia should improve over the course of this season, but it won't happen overnight. A couple of mental mistakes could be costly versus N.C. State's swarming defensive front. Meanwhile, Wilson has proven to be a perfect fit for Wolfpack offensive coordinator Dana Bible's comparatively conservative attack, and he should emerge as the biggest difference-maker in this contest.

Prediction: Wolfpack 27, Gamecocks 21"

Russell Wilson needs to get his shit together and cut down on his interceptions by at least 2 this year if we want to be competitive according to the CBS preview of USC - NCSU

Driving around Raleigh today, I saw one vehicle with South Carolina car flags. Saw zero vehicles with NCSU flags. Hopefully everyone's just waiting until tomorrow to put theirs up.

Haha, that video was pretty amazing. I think we can all agree that interceptions were Russell's biggest problem last year though.

Maybe because Russel Wilson is our savior, he is going to go out and play cornerback and pick off a pass this year. Maybe that's how he knocks it off by 2.

So pumped for tomorrow, wish I was in Raleigh, but home will have to do.

the best part of that was how they lauded wilson for 249 consecutive attempts without a pick and then in the next sentence talked about how he needed to cut the "interception ratio" down by two.

*tuple facepalm.

I don't know where spencer tillman is from but he doesn't like state.

http://www.wfnz.com/topic/play_window.php?audioType=Episode&audioId=3965693

You have to skip past the first 2/3's or so to get to this gem

Mac: do you like NC State at all?
Tillman: No not at all blah blah not enough depth or something

But he does like UNC and think they could play in the championship game
